I'm just curious: when you think about your conversations with other board members, do you picture them as the avatar that represent them? And, if so, would that change if you happened to see what the other people actually looked like?

I definitely think of the avatar. It's really the only information I would have to go by. Sometimes the avatar can even influence how I read particular posts. If, for some reason, the avatar bugs me, I might not take the post for what it is really saying. The opposite is also true.
Except for my red eyes and the costume, I look almost exactly like my avatar...

If you keep your avatar up for a long time, and it's a picture of a person, then yeah I tend to picture the avatar. Lonestarr, for instance, is pretty well-fixed in my mind's eye as the master of darkness, and Nightwing will always be, well, Nightwing.

I tend to picture all of you to look like your avatars. Nightwing will always be Nightwing, BourgeoisBuffoon will always be an avant-garde snowman, Maxie Zeus will always be Maxie Zeus, etc.

I'm with Bourgeious, usually I'll see people as their avatars, especially if they repeatedly use a similar theme, like DG with DG and Maxie Zeus with Zeus and so on. I'd be kind of surprised if I saw their actual picture and they looked different from their avatar. Sometimes if I dont know what an avatar is, I'll think back about someone's old avatar. Like Karkull, I cant tell what your avatar is, so I think you still look like Karkull.

So nightflower, you dont have blue skin!? :p

Oh for the record, this may come as a surprise, but I do not look like Hawkgirl. ;)

Yeah, I usually use avatars to help remember who's who. Especially if they keep the same one. But after reading a person's posts for a while, the avatar becomes less important, as I remember the person more for what they've posted before than the picture beside what they posted. If that makes any sense at all. :p

Personally, I shape-shift to match whatever my current avatar is.

I'm not usually fazed by people changing their avatar, unless they've had them for ages and ages. If someone frequently changes their avatar then I don't really actually notice...

Meanwhile, my avatar keeps changing. The one with the juggling gloves is pretty accurate, since I recently learned how to juggle, and my hands do things on their own (and that sometimes gets me into trouble...) The one I have right now is also fairly accurate. I don't look like Slappy (and in age, I'm directly *opposite* of Slappy), but my personality is a lot like hers (like when I said to the audience at our play last year: "It's over! Get out'a here!"). And I like explosives. (For anyone who thinks I'm joking......I'm not. I bet you can guess what my class is currently learning about in science... :D ) And I love walnuts. Point proven.

I usually do imagine that the posters look somewhat like their avatars. It makes things interesting. :p I hope no one pictures me as a floating green head. I really don't resemble my avatar at all. I've had a few people say I look similar to Kate Winslet, only with green eyes and blonde hair. IMO, I think those people are trippin' on something. ;)

I think of a definition for all Toonzone members is people who are smart enough to know when commercials are insulting and yell at the TV screen (Not many people are like that). Well, if someone has a unique name, I picture in my mind what they look like based on their name. When you were new, I pictured you as a middle aged hippie (specifically, a white middle aged hippie with a grey ponytail and beard, who is of average hight and build). I know different now...

Also, if someone has a cartoon character name, I see them as that character, even if the avatar they have doesn't match it.

If someone has a normal sounding human name, I see them as a generic human unless they have a very weird personality (like Danielle!). It's rare that I associate an avatar with looks, I think the only person I do that for is Joe Tully, who will always be Bullwinkle to me.

I wonder how people see me, I don't have an avatar theme, just a title one, and I've never really mentioned what I looked like...

In addition, I think (at least in my case) avatars are a way of expressing ones self like alot of what people were saying. I think it would a fantatic idea if people did post a picture of themselves. But I love fairies and I work in graphic design so I always attach wings to myself-- ha ha.

I've tried to keep a cat theme going (mostly about Rita from Animaniacs) but every once in a while I'll make exceptions, like Wakko and Mr. Gobble for Thanksgiving. :D

Some current favorite avatars of mine are Ricochet's (LOL!), calhoun's Space Ghost, kylewayne's new one, Failure's Hawkgirl, and Batman Bride's fairy (if you're reading this, your avatar is absolutely beautiful!)

I keep missing this thread too, but at the rate people keep posting here, I imagine it'll be long again in no time. :)

That's funny becuase my sister says I'll probably end up looking like Steven Page, or (artist) Steve Skroce. I'm have a smaller build then Page, not as...ah...stocky (?) I think. I can play guitar, but I can't sing like the guy.

It took me a while on line last night to finally track down the right avatar for our Lady Kylewayne, so I can't recall exactly where I found it, nor did I put the site on my favs list. Hmm, this thread took a quick turn off topic didnt it? Sooooo, in terms of themes, it's easy for some people to pick avatars based on their names, but can anyone think of any "failure" themes? I can think of all these bleak images, but i like a little variety.

Oh and just to throw out a question that people might answer, for those who dont use themes, do you choose your avatars based on how cool the picture looks or is there something else behind the choosing process?

I think that's a great idea. The Star Wars contest featured all kinds of different characters from Star Wars. Just as long as everybody and their brother doesn't pick a Spider Man avatar, I think it would be great. There are other characters to choose from in those movies you mentioned that would make for great avatars.

Well, I could compose a list of maybe upcoming big movies, DVD/VHS, and tv events (like marathons and the such) and we can pick and choose some ideas. Another idea is a SEASON FINALE avatar theme for the month fo May, when all of the shows end their season. Everyone can make an avatar from their favorite show to showcase their favorite series.

Okay, so I've got this friend who, when I last saw him in September, took a picture of me (and a bunch of the rest of us who were around). So he has the picture I would be using (and it's been developed). He has a scanner, so he can upload the picture. He has email, so he could send me the picture. All three items are sitting in his living room within a few feet of each other. And yet. . .

HE CANNOT COORDINATE THINGS SO THAT THEY ALL GET TOGETHER. When I last talked to him he muttered something about getting the photo scanned in "one of these days." :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Until then I'm just going to have to rely on that ancient pencil sketch I have up next to my bio.

Well, we've been aiming to do these only once a month, to keep them rare enough to be fun and exciting. But if we want to step them up a bit, we could make them bi-weekly during the non-holiday months. So, after Christmas we could have 2 contests in January, then a Valentine's Day one in February and a St. Patrick's Day one in March. I suppose if we can't wait that long between Feb 14 and March 17, we could squeeze another one in between.

I'm 26, but people still think I'm a freshman in college), but when someone tries to take a picture of me the goofiness factor goes up by 10. Feel lucky that I can neither work the scanner nor resize large pics. I was just looking at my college yearbook photos--in one I look like a deranged cowboy and in another, Tommy Chong. And those are the good ones.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I think blondes are mostly dumb. It just happens in my personal experience during school that I've come across with alot of "not so smart people" that were blondes and most were ditzy cheerleaders. it's just my personal experience :p

I'm like confused,
Do we have to put up an avatar that goes with each theme or can we put up any avatar that we want and choose regardless of theme?
and like are we allowed to stay with one avatar and not change it,
because I see some people that have the self portrait theme and some just have whatever they want.

You can change your avatar whenever you like, it's entirely up to you. I changed mine a bit early, for example, and may change it again before the Christmas Avatar contest (those are voluntary as well). I didn't think I was going to use this picture as an avatar, because much of the detail is lost when it's at this small size, but it was so cute I couldn't resist. (Shameless plug: there's a link to the large version over at the Drawing Board) :D It's Rita and Runt, out Christmas caroling.

I really am anxious for the holidays to start...because (as you might be able to tell from my signature) I got finals to go through, starting at the end of this week...

First, to allay the worries of our newest members, all Avatar Contests are entirely voluntary. You can do whatever you want with your avatar.

Second, as for the schedule: I assume we'll still be doing holiday-themed Contests when the holidays roll around. In that case, how about the following rough schedule:

Dec 5 - 13: Lord of the Rings Avatar Contest
Dec 14 - 25: Christmas Avatar Contest
January: One (maybe two) Contests
Early February: Valentine's Day Avatar Contest
Feb to March: One Contest
Mid March: St. Patrick's Day Avatar Contest
April - May: Two (maybe three) Contests
Late May: Spiderman Avatar Contest (to coincide with the movie).
