Another mind boggling weekend of the box office has past and Harry Potter is now a mere $12 million away from hitting the $200 million mark after only 10 days in theatres. And it's not surprising - I saw the movie and thought it kicked , but I'll post up my review later. The movie fell only 35% from last weekend, proving this flick will have staying power. Spy Game brought in the crowds and may end up being Pitt's biggest grosser is years. His only starring movie to pass $100 mill was Se7en, and that was quite some time ago. meanwhile, Martin Lawrence's new "comedy" Black Knight didn't fare quite as well...here's the rundown:
1. Glitter - $250,000,000 ($750 mill)
....oops...heh...here's the real top ten:
1. Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone - $58,550,000 ($188.1 mill)
2. Monster's Inc. - $24,500,000 ($192.8 mill)
3. Spy Game - $21,600,000 ($30.5 mill)
4. Black Knight - $11.660,000 ($16.1 mill)
5. Shallow Hal - $8,960,000 ($55.4 mill)
6. Out Cold - $4,700,000 ($6.9 mill)
7. Domestic Disturbance - $4,150,000 ($40 mill)
8. Heist - $3,285,000 ($20.2 mill)
9. The One - $2,200,000 ($42 mill)
10. Life As A House - $2,125,000 (12.3 mill)
Harry Potter looks like it will have two, maybe three more #1 weekends before it is overtaken. December is gonna be a full month and Lord of the Rings is predicted to be the movie to rightfully dethrone Potter.

Harry Potter the book is okay. Harry Potter the movie is not. "Bringing the book to life" my tush. For me, it didn't bring the book to life; it set a whole new aspect to the book I never even knew. Not in a good way. Kids read the book and relate to each other what THEY think the characters look like, how THEY think the characters feel, how THEY think the story moves along. Kids see the movie...what is there to compare? The kids saw the same thing; they cannot say they saw something different. Even if they had a different view when they read the book, they won't remember. Why? Because whenever they picture a character or a character's traits, what do they see? Views from the movie! But those aren't THEIR views...those are the PRODUCER'S views, the DIRECTOR'S views, the MOVIE'S views. My point: The kids lose their imagination. The only thing they "imagine" are what the movie has stamped into their brains.
I'm sorry for rambling. It was hardely even on-subject. But it just came out. Please forgive me.

Yeah, I guess that's a good way to put it. I'm probably not making too many friends by saying that, but hey, whatcha gonna do? I think more than anything I hate the hype it's getting. Every other commercial is for the movie or the toys or the games and so on. Course, when they do the same for Episode II I'll be happy... only six sort months away...

Looks like HP might beat Titanic if it can get its shots in while it can.

you make some really good points..it's cause of those things that i'm pretty much against music videos for songs..they also pretty much take away a person's unique. personal imaging and feelings from the songs...
one minor thing though..harry potter's usually always gracing the cover of each book and the kid in the movie looks alot like him lol..so at least that's one character that's not shattered..i've never read the books so i don't really know, but i thought there were some drawings by rowling in them too though right?

I understand Danielle's point, though it seems to me that it's basically an argument that no book should ever be adapted into a movie. After all, any adaptation of any book will replace the reader's imagined view with that of the producer, director, or set designer, whether the adaptation is of "Harry Potter," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Gone With the Wind" or "Psycho."
NOTE: I edited the previous post to put the quotation box in.

I'm not suprised either. I'm sure the movie will tap out at around $400 million. I honestly can not see it hitting the $600 million mark.

The Wall Street Journal today reports that "Harry Potter" is beginning to drop fast-- so fast that this weekend it may fall to #2 by "Behind Enemy Lines." There is no way that it will dethrone "Titanic" now, and the article by Jack King suggests it will end up not even matching "Episode 1."

I liked Harry Potter: the movie, but the overexposure is getting to me. At least when Pokemon was the big thing, there were all these reports surfacing about how dangerous the franchise was.
:D
They were funny.

I don't wish ill of Harry Potter, but I think all the overexposure may have made it harder to keep up. The more screens you have a movie on, the more people can see it... and the faster it'll burn out. This has been a trend in movies for some time, as the "life span" of even popular movies has been getting shorter and shorter.

Harry Potter is expected to tak ein $30 - 40 million this week. Behind Enemy Lines is only expected to take in $15 - $20. Real shame. I was hoping Behind Enemy Lines would do better.

Really? Apparently Fox was expecting a much bigger take, based on tracking polls.

According to www.boxofficereport.com the take may only be around $14 - $20 million. I may have read it wrong though so I could be wrong. We'll find out tomorrow when I post up this weekend's boxoffice stats!
