As far as the name "Wonder Woman", I'm betting you 10 bucks that once again Lois Lane is responisble for naming a hero. We already know that its a name she'd come up with from the episode with Mala in Superman TAS. ;)
I've really found myself enjoying JL Diana alot.
Personality wise, partly it actually reminds me of Post-Crisis Wonder Woman when she showed up in the Legends mini-series. She was tough but very naieve.
The fact that shes younger and not exactly assigned to be here adds a certain something to her. Basically, the Amazons dont really give a damn about "Mans World" but Diana is willing to defy her mother because she has that level of compassion.
I think we can all agree that compassion is something that has always been integral to Dianas comics counterpart.
Her origin sequence I found myself liking very much to. While I adore the entire tournament of the amazons from her original origin, there was something very...I dont know..at once sympathetic and mythical about her sneaking into the temple of Athena and taking the sacred items. When she apogizes aloud to her mother I found it very touching because she's doing what she knows in her heart to be right even though it may forever alienate her from her mother.
and speaking of Hippolyta, her visual doesnt begin and end with George Perez and shes not a biological mother to Diana so I think people who are nit picking that she was blond just need to get over it.
The sequence inthe temple actually reminded me a bit of the Tarna segment from Heavy Metal only minus the nudity (damn! :p ) and in alot of ways, that idea works much better here.
Some people have issues with Diana being portrayed as younger. Its different but I think it actually works. Now if she were a teenager I'd have problems with it. But what I get from it is that she's basically in her early 20's and lived the life of an amazon princess with no exposure to anything outside of that.
Eventually however, I think you get a sense that she will grow to become basically what I like to describe as the third hero to beconsidered the Worlds Finest.
I think this sort of journey of growth is exactly the thing Wonder Womans story has always needed and is why those early Perez issues and Alex Ross's Spirit of Truth worked so well.
She has power. She has compassion. Yet, she also has *alot* to learn. I think JL merely focuses on this and makes it the more important element by having her rebeling against the Amazon way for the greater good.
Though I do suspect that her "ambassador" status will come up as a condition on which Diana will be able to remain in Mans World. This after an attempt by Hippolyta to bring her (and the sacred items) back to Themscriya.
Its a different approach, it all really works. I find TAS Diana to be likeable, sympathetic, and just plain cool. I also think people are giving her voice actress a raw deal, but thats another post entirely.
