View Full Version : The Crime Syndicate on Justice League?

I just read through the JLA: Earth 2 hardcover the other night, and I'm really hoping that Bruce Timm and company could adapt (or otherwise use) the Crime Syndicate in the Justice League show. For those who've never read it (or just remember the old, pre-Crisis "Earth 3" versions) the Crime Syndicate is a version of the Justice League that exists in a reality where the very notions of "good" and "evil" are reversed. This reality's team consists of:

Ultraman
A mangled earth astronaut who was discovered by an alien intelligence who reassembled him (without knowing much about human physiology) and returned him to Earth; where he became a psychopathic version of Superman with sadist tendencies.

Owlman
In this reality young Thomas Wayne watched his mother and brother Bruce get murdered, an event that he blames his father for. To get revenge on him, Thomas has traveled and trained to become Owlman, a ruthless vigilantee dedicated to making his father, Commissioner Wayne, suffer.

(Think of it as a variation of the Batman/Joker rivalry here. Owlman will not kill his father, but he'll make him suffer in any way imaginable. Commissioner Wayne, however, wants nothing more than to bring him to trial, then kill him. Both suffer from guilt over the death of their family).

Superwoman
It's an evil version of Wonder Woman with Lois Lane as the secret identity. Although married to Clark Kent, she's a tramp who will sleep with anyone...except Ultraman (much to his anger). She's also a real b**** and is seeing Owlman behind Ultraman's cape.

Johnny Quick
A evil version of the Flash who shoots up a superspeed formula like heroin (okay, this one would have to be rethought a bit for TV).

Power Ring
An evil version of Green Lantern who killed the original bearer of the ring in order to claim it. He now possesses the power, but has the spirit of an evil Tibetan monk named Volthoom "crawling around in [his] head."

The only hero on this world is Luthor, who will "protect" his planet at any cost.

:D

This would make a cool episode. Any thoughts?

It would be cool to see, but do you think CN would let them do a lot of that stuff?...

Well, there is the Pre-Crisis Syndicate.
And they were a lot less rough, or well explained, I might add.
THe characters were the same, power wise, just no twisted backstory. Ultraman was a guy who got different powers every time he was exposed to green kryptonite. Superwoman was an evil Wonder Woman. Owlman looked a lot goofier, with a golden age-style hawkman type cowl. In the shape of an owl of course.
Johnny Quick was a speedster and Power Ring was an evil version of Green Lantern.
Now, they never went into the backstory. I should admit that I like the Graphic Novel, but for a cartoon, they might just go with the more innocent version.
They were still fun, just not as, um..er.. twisted.
:p

I say go with a more edited version of the recent Crime Syndicate.

I never read Earth 2, but those characters sound amazingly stupid. Im hoping Timm and co are as uninterested in them as I am.

Earth 2 was one of Morrisons best stoylines and one of my favorites I would love to see it brought in some form to the animated show. I personally liked The Martian Manhunter taking down Ultra Man (that worlds Superman)who had braged about having killed a Martian before.

If they do use the Crime Syndicate I propose an added bonus: get Tim Daly to do the voice of Ultraman.

Thanks, Gotham Dude :)

I really like the versions done by PQ (don't know his real name) shown on the DCUAnimated site - they are very well done.

They all look pretty cool, but I really liked Frank Quietly's redesigns.

I mentioned getting Tim Daly to do the voice for Ultraman, and now I've got ideas for Superwoman and Owlman:

Superwoman could be voiced by Dana Delaney. You know: she played Lois Lane, [the revised] Superwoman is Lois...it could be fun.

Owlman could be voiced by Keith David. Everytime I hear his voice on the Justice League bumpers, I think "Why hasn't he done a voice for the show yet?" Besides, his voice is just as creepy as Kevin Conroy's is.

Any thoughts?

Dana Delaney sounds good for Superwoman.

Unfortunately, I don't know who Keith David is (haven't been able to see any JL stuff yet living in Canada). I checked the IMDB, and it says he did the voice for Goliath in Gargoyles - if that's him, then yes, he'd be great...

Keith David was Goliath on Gargoyles. To see him in person, check out the excellent SF/horror movie Pitch Black.

He was also Mary's father in There's Something About Mary and the main general guy at NASA in Armageddon. Gargoyles is on my list of things that need to come back, right under Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Crime Syndicate was a great rivalry for the heroes of Earth 1 and Earth 2 in the old Justice league comics. I would love to see those villains in the new show. I always liked evil parallel counterparts of heroes.
