How come I've seen Eugene Poddany's name on some of the WB cartoons from 1951 (such as "French Rarebit", "Lovelorn Leghorn", and "Room and Bird" to name a few)?

He was the "Orchestra Leader" on some of the cartoons of the early 50s. I think I've seen his name on Zipping Along too, but I'll have to check my copy.

If you're wondering why Poddany scored those cartoons instead of Carl Stalling, it's because Stalling suffered a head injury around the time those cartoons were being produced and Poddany had to fill in for him while he was recovering.

Here's a list of WB cartoons scored by Poddany:

Room and Bird
French Rarebit
The Wearing of the Grin
Leghorn Swoggled
Lovelorn Leghorn

Thanks for the information, Matt. I was mistaken, Milt Franklyn did the "Orchestra" for Zipping Along.

Eugene Poddany did some good work for WB cartoons ("The Wearing of the Grin" is his best from this era), but he also did good work for Chuck Jones' Tom & Jerry cartoons. He also wrote scores for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Horton Hears a Who" (Rhino released the complete scores to both specials - narration, songs and music - on a CD together).

I think some of the earlier scores for Jone's Tom and Jerry cartoons are quite good. Pent House Mouse feels like an attempt to copy the Hanna Barbera style. The scores for the later cartoons sound like silent movie music.
