I usually like taller characters to be evil for some reason.

I'm not sure if people are really as tall as they seem in anime. It's hard to tell sometimes. Sometimes they're drawn tall or they're super-saiyan muscular, yet when their vital stats are given they're just about 5½ feet tall or something (after converting from metric). It's very rare to have tall Japanese people.

I'm not saying that Spike or Naga or whoever aren't really tall. But sometimes, you have to have something like a car or a chair or something to put them next to to really gauge their height accurately. And even then, depending on the camera angle, that may not help either.

For example, let's take Maggie from R.O.D the TV. She appears to be tall when compared to her sisters. But when standing next to men (average men that are usually about 5'10" or maybe 6'), she's still comparitively shorter. Even in some of the pics (like that really fanservicey pic of her in a shirt on the pencilboard insert), she's about average size and her legs aren't nearly as long as they appear to be when you see her in action scenes in the anime.

This isn't necessarily anime-related but in Justice League when you put Wonder Woman and Superman next to each other, she's almost the same height (a bit shorter). And she's a friggin' amazon strong woman.

Anyway, I guess height is in the eye of the beholder, to sum things up.

It's very rare to have tall Japanese people...Actually, according to world height charts, Japan is about even with the average height of an American. Average height of an American is 5'8, Japan it's 5'7 (although remember, this is calculating both men and woman, so men will be taller while woman will be shorter). But overall, not that big a difference.

Americans used to be the tallest in the world, but now they're in the middle. Mainly because the living conditions in other countries have improved so the people are eating better and living healthier lives. Americans though have gotten much fatter and are now one of the most obese societies.

Holland apparently has the tallest people, the average Dutch person is almost 6 feet tall. Makes you wonder why more don't join the NBA :p

But it was common to see people around 5'7, 5'8, 5'9, which supposedly is around the average height of a Japanese.

Now when I went to China, I saw a lot of regularly-sized Chinese, but also some frickin' huge people in the North. I don't know what's in the rice they're eating...

Not really. Although there's certainly more immigrants now than before (especially in the past 2 decades), the total population of Americans still far outnumbers the immigrants to really make any noticeable difference (although I'm talking about immigrants only, not ethnic groups, who still count as Americans).

And even if you were to count the ethnic groups, on average they're all fairly similar in size. Even the Asian-Americans, stereotypically seen as the smallest, are getting taller.
