Plot: This time Bugs is chased by hunting dog Willoughby. After 6 minutes of Bugs pulling everyday tricks on Willoughby, that Bugs would usually play on Elmer Fudd, Willoughby falls from a cliff, followed by Bugs who pokes fun at the dog's horrible fate, doesn't watch where he's walking and he too plummets toward the earth's crust. Before they get smashed into the pavement, they put their air-breaks on and Bugs comments, "Fooled you. Didn't we?"
Grade: B+
Comments and Observations:
1. The entire opening sequence looks like a re-written script from A Wild Hare.
2. The first cartoon (i believe) where Bugs is seen sitting on top of the WB logo munching on a carrot and pulling down a "window shade".
3. When Bugs is standing over the cliff making fun of Willoughby's horrible fate, Bugs has no toes!
4. When Bugs and the dog are plummeting down toward earth, Bugs's carrot dissapears and reappears a lot.
5. Favorite Line: I don't really have a favorite line. But, i for some reason, like Bugs's comment "Too bad" as he watches Willoughby plunge to his doom.
Technical Stuff: Made in 1941, Directed by Tex Avery.
Also, there are no "complete" copies of The Heckling Hare. All known prints of this cartoon end with Bugs saying "Fooled you. Didn't we?" Originally, Tex was going to have Bugs and the dog exchange opinions on how gullible the audience is, while not looking where they're walking fall off another cliff. Bugs remarks, "Hold on to your hats, Folks! Here we go again!" It's been long rumored that Leon wanted the ending cut because he didn't like "his" new star falling to an certain fate. Tex refused to change the ending, and thus explaines how Tex got booted out of WB and why he moved to MGM.
