Hey,

Since basically all of the characters were completly revamped in one way or another for X-Men: Evolution, we managed to get a nice range of different designs for each of the characters.

So which ones did you like? Which ones didn't you like? Do you generally like the designs overall?

I generally disliked the designs with a couple of exceptions. Storm looked cool and it was a great twist to make Rogue a Goth. They BOTH looked much better than their '93 counterparts.

Ugh. Jersey hair.

I think all of their hairstyles improved, except maybe Gambits. As for the costumes, I think Storm's, Magneto's and Wolverine's were the best improvements.

Gambit's design was a complete mistake. That mushroom hairdo...Ugh.

I liked Nightcrawler, Rogue, Avalanche and Toad the most.

I like all the designs except Gambits... what were they thinking? I was a pretty shocked at Rogue's design to be honest. I loved it when I got used to it though. Kitty's design annoyed me for awhile, I liked her better with the curly hair and brown eyes of the comics. Well I adjusted to the change by season Two so it's okay.

I love Pietro's design, sleek and pretty just the way he should be. As was Pryo's. He looked way cooler than in the original saeson, more colorful as well. Poor Scott he ended up looking like such a dork. I know he was supposed to be one, so that's another great design. Jean's fit her pretty well as the qeen of the school. Glad they didn't go with the cheerleader version they had.

They kept messing up Gambits eyes in Evo. I don't know if it was ether animation mistakes or they just could not make up their mind of how they wanted them.

While Scotts design was not great it is one of the few that actually fits his "Slim" nick name. Plus for that.

I liked most of the designs besides Gambit for the most part.

I really liked Steve Gordon's designs on the whole. They were visually appealing and the teenagers were built like actual teenagers (hooray for no muscles as big as a human head!) and had different shapes and sizes. My personal favorite character designs would have to be Kitty, Scott, Rogue, and Tabitha. My least favorites are Gambit and Evan, mainly because of the bad haircuts and fashion decisions (his shirt is tucked in his boxer shorts? Ick).

Overall,I liked the Evo character designs....except for Jubilee(I wanted her to have short hair like she had in the first X-Men series)...

Best? The Sentinel. Best Mech I've seen on television, bar none.

I was also pleasantly surprised with how the Brotherhood turned out. All of 'em. ('Cept Tabitha.) Kind of amazing, considering Blob hurts to look at his other incarnations. I won't say he was appealing in Evolution, but he was fun to have around. And Avalanche was pretty cool overal.

I liked most of the designs. I was only dissapointed a few times. But the worst disapointment was Jean's design. I never came around to liking that. Her whole character was just...euh.

i thought their designs where pretty cool overall, there was none i really disliked. The creators had deffinatly made the designs their own and they fit their personality well.

It didnt seem too camp unlike older versions of the xmen

just wish perhaps some of their earlier uniforms could have been a little bit better to begin with as their future ones i prefered slightly more

I completely agree - whilt most of the characters were well built, they didn't get too the point of being unrealistic, i.e. with 20 individual muscles in their stomach alone.

They were all pretty good (Okay, except maybe Gambit).

It's weird, considering it didn't change much, but my favorite was probably Beast's redesign.

They played up the ape-like qualities in him rather than making him just a large furry man and they gave him a hairstyle that didn't look almost exactly like Wolverine's.

Cyclops's was cool. Some people said he looked like a dork, but I think his Evo design looked less dorky than almost any of his comic book designs that involved that cowl/skullcap thing covering his hair.

Toad's look was also kind of cool. I liked that they ended up incorporating aspects of the movie character's powers while still keeping him recognisable as the Toad from the older comics. In the newer comics, they made him look like Ray Park. It was kind of cool at first, but that design kind of started going downhill after a while.

I liked Magneto's redesign a lot. I even told Frank Paur as much several years back when I met him. He re-designed moth of them.

And yes, Goth Rogue was brilliant, had to shake Frank's hand for that one.

I said some time ago that "sexbomb" Rogue was psychologically unrealistic. I'd go for movie Rogue as the most "realistic", but making her Goth has a reason (quite obvious one).

You assumed the mask of a spooky goth who likes to sit at cemeteries, listen to "dark" music and generally be weird. Every time you walk through the corridor, others step aside. You want everyone to reject you. You want to scare them.

Ape Beast was a nice change from "that big fuzzy guy with appaling 'Wolvie losing hair'-like hairdo". I must say I liked him.
Biker Sabretooth was great as well. I just couldn't stand his comic/TAS "fuzzy spandex and stupid curly hair" design.
Ohhh, and one more...Scarlet Witch was awesome, better than all of her comic versions I have seen (and I saw probably every one at UXN).

I was really fond of Evo's take on Cyclops. He once carried the nickname "Slim" Summers, but nearly everybody post-Jim Lee drew him as a professional bodybuilder. I enjoyed seeing Scott with proportions that harkened back to Kirby's version of the character.

I thought Evo Scarlet Witch's design was really interesting. The series had a more intense, brooding perspective of Wanda, and the design reflected that nicely. I enjoyed it.

My favorite, though, would probably be Angel. I thought the series had a really classy costume, and general look, for Warren. In fact, Evo Angel is probably everything I love about the character demonstrated in a single half hour.

I really liked how they redesigned Wolverine's costume for the first season-- how they made the suit, which was originally all spandex, and modified it with leather straps and buckles. It still felt like the old costume of the comics, but it was given a more serious tone, and nothing looked glaringly altered about it.

I agree with everyone about Gambit--the bowl cut had to go. I guess they were trying to distinguish themselves from the 90's series, but I wish they would have just kept his hair spikey.

The redesigns of Scott and Beast were very creative. It's great that they took the prominent qualities from the 90's series and eliminated the junk. It really showed in the animation--their movements were much more free and much less clunky. Same thing for Jean, keeping the same outfit, but getting rid of all of the pockets and pouches from the suit and making it black (instead of that...orange plastic look).

Nick Fury was awesome--there was something about his design that made you take him seriously. He could have easily been the standard comic book secret agent in spandex who flies around in a jetpack, but the slicked-back hair and trench coat worked. He always looked like he had a cigarette in his mouth, but since it was a kids' toon...just goes to show you that was some dang subtle character-designing! :anime:

Didn't really care for Colossus' look--something about his armor needed to be redesigned...it looked like he had a hard time walking around in it. Both Pyro and Avalanch's designs were appropriate, Magneto's 'evil-Batman' design really took off, and I'm glad they made Xavier's mobility a standard wheelchair instead of a hovercraft. It added to the 'retro year-one' feel of the series.

I really liked the designs for Rogue, Cyclops, Scarlet Witch, and Storm. Gambit's was easily the worst (it's almost as bad as his 'fro in Ultimate X-men).

i do prefer the evo version of beast, it just seemed more like an ape kinda beast like someone else here said

i quite like colossus armour, i thought he looked quite cool, sometimes a bit to bandy and not chunky enough but still ok

i think gambits look would have been better if he just had roughled up hair, the rest of his clothing etc, was down to a T i thought

If you're talking about designs rather than character interpretations, then you're right about her looking more realistic in the movie. All the characters looked more "realistic". That was the point of the movie designs, so the point is moot.

However, I think you're talking about the character interpretation. That's one problem I have with the movie. Though, the scared, quiet teenage runaway may make sense, there is a problem with that. It's just not Rogue. Then again, I can say that the relationship angst-ridden "sexbomb" of the '90s isn't really her either. That's a misinterpretation of what they were trying to do and if you watch that stuff again, you could probably see that. Rogue is supposed to be the wild child of the X-Men. She's the crazy, dangerous, sassy mouthed girl who makes up the rules as she goes along and likes a good scrap. If you really want to see the real Rogue, you have to look at Claremont's stuff in the comic books. His 2000 return to the X-Men books actually marked a good period because he returned Rogue to this characterization (most people said the whole period of his writing was awful, but I thought he did Rogue exceedingly well). That said, the goth Rogue from Evolution probably hit closest to the mark. Though she was an outsider, that crazy streak really came through (like the snowmobile race against Scott in that one episode). In fact, Rogue had a sort of "punk rock" look going for her in the late '80s, so it's not hard to imagine a goth look being too far off.

I dug a lot of the Evo designs. Some of them aren't as good as others, but a lot of them were really cool. The quality animation in the show always helped.

I especially like Cyclops, a cross between the Jim Lee suit and the X-Factor suit. Given the number of costumes Cyclops has had, it was cool to see a bit of everything in here.

Wolverine's first costume was bad ass. I wasn't sure on the orange at first, but after seeing it move, I really came to love it. Especially the boots.

The women were a mixed bag. Storm, Mystique, Rouge, Boom Boom and Kitty were nice, but Jean, Magma, Jubilee and most of the civillian designs were a little lacking.

I've never really been a big fan of the Brotherhood, but thier designs captured them perfectly. Not sure about Avalanche's helmet, but that's more a comic mistake than anything else. Love Pyro though, easily his greatest design.

I actually liked Gambit's design. I never understood why a guy like that would wear pink. Only Bret Hart can wear pink and be cool. :)

If you mean their costume designs I was under the impression that the "new mutants" didn't get their own distinctive costumes until they matured with their powers or at least graduated to a higher level on par with the older X-Men.

Well, I liked the Brotherhood redesigns the most, seeing as these characters needed the most revamping and Gordon pulled it off nicely.
- Blob looks more round and normal, as opposed to his original, ugly Michelin-man version. And in Evo, he wears pants (thank God!).
- Avalanche is just badass. Also, I love his future look in the last episode.
- Toad looks like, well, toad. I care more for his voice and character than design. It just works, nothing else. Glad they gave him something more that the uncanny power to... hop real high. He's a little bit less useless that way. A little bit.
- Quicksilver. They didn't really change much of his looks. Even his costume is left as it was.
- Scarlet Witch. Stu-pen-dousss!
- Mystique. I'm not really that big on her first version, but I love the cat-eyes/spandex look from second season.

Aside from that, Pyro's great. Love the grin. The original version didn't really have much character traits, but here... he's a real pyro.

Sabretooth is better, but that's not hard, concerning that his spandex from early comic books is just fugly. His werewolf-movie design is perfect for this kind of character.

Forge and Arcade both are certainly... interesting.

Rogue. No argument here, everyone already said what needed to be said.

The ones I didn't really like are:
- Costumed Angel. I know he's kind of a lonely, unexperienced crime-fighter, so the change is justified, but that doesn't change the fact that he's fugly.
- Gambit. YEEEAAARRRGHHH!
- Nightcrawler. Not devilish enough. I'd rather seen his Ultimate design.

By the way, I think they couldn't really left Kitty's hair alone. Curly hair must be a hell to animate.

Oh, and... WHAT Magneto redesign? I didn't really spot any differences between this a comic book versions, maybe aside from the "evil eyes", but I don't think that counts.

Honk honk, the second Polish Lance'r arrives!
Magneto's costume was based on the movie one, it was dark, nearly black, compared to his early comic/TAS costume which was red/magenta.

Nightcrawler is nearly identical with the old comic one, not counting the haircut. Anyway, he looks good with it.

Gambit sucked. Bowl cut, messing with his eye color...Hell, I'd understand the goatee and even threw three-day stubble in, but BOWL CUT? Bad idea. Simply bad. Or worse.

There are a lot of great designs, so many characters were much improved over their TAS counterparts. One that really stands out is Apocalypse for one big reason, aside from the blue cybernetic look, NO BIG "A" BELT BUCKLE!!!

I thought Juggernaut was a little thin for the massive, unstoppable hulk he's supposed to be.

The addition of pupils to Mystique and Nightcrawler was a nice improvement.

There's jus too many characters for me to comment on in one post. I'll just sum up with: a lot of hits and a lot of misses.

Amanda (Kurts girlfriend): needs to lose the spicky necklace and bracelets

The Ugley

Sabertooth: vast improvement over that horribile furry thing he wore in XMTAS
Mistique: hate the wight dress with the scull belt I got to disgaree. I thought Sabretooth's costume was horrible. It was just played off the movie version of his costume which was horrible. Sabretooth had a real costume back in the 1990s and on the X-Men cartoon which actually looked pretty good. I don't think he looked anygood here especially when the animation was poor on his character.

And Mystique's look is classic!
