I'm not sure how many of you folks even have a Costco in your area, let alone a membership card to one (my parents have one through my dad's job,) but yesterday I noticed that the Costco in Spokane (where I'm currently visiting relatives) had bulk manga. For 13 bucks + tax, they had the choice of the first 3 volumes of either Cardcaptor Sakura (the 100% reprints,) Clamp School Detectives (first print version with limited edition posters,) Rave Master or Tokyo Mew Mew. They might have had some other titles, because the selection there was pretty picked over, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it struck me as a pretty good deal that I should mention to the rest of you guys, as manga is bit pricey if you're a serious collector, so any time when you can atleast start a series on the cheap (though in the case of Clamp School Detectives, 1-3 is the whole manga) is probably a good thing.

Anyway, I picked up (well, I guess since my mom got it for me, it's a late xmas gift) the TMM 3 pack. For the price, it's definitely worth it. As a matter of fact, 3 left on such a cliff hanger that I might have to pick up 4-7 through a normal bookstore. Darn addictive Nakayosi manga.

If Costo or Sam's Club get into the manga business as far as deals like this (and knowing how they work, when they are sold out, that's it), it would be a really good thing. It would be even better if they could bundle anime this way.

Hmm, now this sounds interesting. I'll have to keep this in mind next time I'm planing to go shopping for manga. Also means I'll have to get a membership i guess, heh.

Yeah I recall on time I was at BJ's and they had manga sets. I was tempted to get them if only I wasn't broke during the time...

Considering that a membership at Costco is 45 bucks a year, you'd only need to buy two of the manga packs of have come out ahead. Anyway, I'm back in Seattle, so I'll probably try to atleast get by the Costco that's in my neighborhood and check if they've got a similar deal going on. Maybe even they'll have TMM vol.4-6 (I need mah shoujo. It's a medical need. Don't question it. ;))

I just loathe Karl.

On another note, I do have access to BJ's. I might need to see if I can get something good from BJ's. But I can't get BJ's alone; I need someone else's card to get BJ's.

... there had to have been a better name choice for the store.

for finding cheap manga or being a shoujo addict? For having manga at Costco. I live in the area of not one, not two, BUT THREE Costcos and there ain't no cheap manga to be seen.

We do however have Ling Lings at unbeatable prices.

You know, sometimes I wonder just how well manga really sells. I mean, I keep on hearing how manga sells like hotcakes, but at most bookstores I go to, I always see the same manga unsold on the shelf. Then again, I also see a lot of cheapwads that just sit there and read an entire manga at the bookstore so they don't have to buy it (and admittedly, I've been guilty of this myself sometimes... hey, I can't buy everything).

Inuyasha and Rave Master fly off the shelves at my work.

Inuyasha and Rave Master fly off the shelves at my work.Yeah, but it seems these days there's like hundreds of manga coming out. Even I'm having trouble keeping up with all the new releases these days.

I mean, a ton of manga comes out in Japan, but Japan's market is geared towards manga. I just don't believe that most of those manga that gets released in the States can sell so well.

Well, that was the Costco in Spokane. Maybe the Costco in my neighborhood (yay for North Rose Hill in Kirkland) doesn't have it. That could be the case. You never know. (Until tomarrow when I go down there and see.)

Also, it was in with the uber-kiddy books in Spokane. You gotta check that section.

Also, I personally buy a lot of manga. But I'm a geek like that.

Probably burried under the plethora of Lemony Snicket.

Wow, I wonder if they have Gunslinger Girl in three volume packs. Oh wait, that's impossible since it's the only manga I know of which has the only two volumes released a year and a half apart. And that's only if Amazon is right that the second volume is being printed next March.

Sorry, just had to blow some steam. But the CCS pack sounds tempting. It's always been a favorite of mine, though I wouldn't admit it in public in fear of being labeled a pedo. I have my limits. At least GSG has guns.

ADV needs to be shivved for that or something. I've been so tempted to pick up the Japanese volume 2 of GSG to tide me over. Good thing I lucked into a clean Gunslinger doujin at SakuraCon2004. That's helped tide me over, and the art and engrish was great.

"It is a big gun and a small happiness the girl is given."

Fun stuff. Oh well, atleast the TV series should be have a disc out or atleast be up for preorder by the time the next volume of the manga hits. Personally, I hope Funi includes the Henreitta Pinky:Cos figures as bonus for the volume one with box. That or a scale replica of Henrietta's Sig 9mm. That'd be tight.

You know, GSG was based off an H-doujin series, right?

Not that I'm the type to care though. If I worried about that kind of stuff, I wouldn't be reading all that Nakayosi shoujo stuff (CCS and TMM included) or the Dengeki "comic full of girls for boys" stuff, which stateside ends up reading as shoujo anyway (like Azumanga Daioh, Ichigo Mashimaro) unless it's really trying to act shonen in it's execution (Sgt. Frog, GSG.) What I read is what I read, and I don't care what people think of me reading it. I like certain manga whose target demographic was originally girls a quarter of my age. I don't care. It's got a good, cute story with nice art? I'm sold. Here's my money, give me the manga. I also like some really dark stuff like Planetes and Saikano. Tastes are always personal, and not always predictable. Que sera sera.

Also, considering that most of my otaku lady friends are either reading the same titles (so they think it's cool I'm a male shoujophile) or they are reading titles are too strong for my tastes (really, um, "mature" shoujo and shonen titles  ) I've found that perception isn't an issue anyway. People who don't like anime don't care, and people who are into anime usually either don't care or thing it's cool/cute/whatever.

So go ahead and buy CCS. It's a pretty good release at an excellent price. Pick up Clamp School Detectives while you're at it. You can never have too much Clamp IMHO. Don't worry about what people think. If you like it because it's a good manga, what else matters? :D

(Now that I think about it, I had some steam to blow off too, no? )

Well, Japan's new basketball league will be called the BJ League. :D

Well, the manga reviewer at AoD is starting to agree with you (http://www.animeondvd.com/specials/year-in-review/2004/2004gutsoon.php).

Though, calling your basketball league the BJ League is just asking for trouble.

Going to have to remember to grill the ADV people at Katsucon about what in the world happened to GSG. I realize theyr'e ratehr busy down there but a year and a half in rediculous.

So, I just came back from my local Costco here in Kirkland and they had the same bulk manga (in fact, they also had Digimon and G-Gundam. Also, it's the second CCS series, Master of the Clow, they've got volumes 1-3 for, not the first.) This is important because the Kirkland, WA Costco is smallest Costco in existence as far as I know. As such, the fact they devoted space to manga means it's almost definitely a chainwide thing. If the bulk isn't in your Costco, it's either already sold out, or it's not there yet.

Meanwhile, I picked up the CCS: Master of the Clow vol.1-3 pack. Like I said, Nakayosi shoujo is like crack. Adorable crack. ;)
