View Full Version : WHAT IS IT with red-headed girls??

Harley Quinn
12-27-2004, 01:14 AM
Honestly. They're EVERYWHERE. Why is it that cartoon creators seem to think that red-heads are the most heroic, intelligent, and beautiful of all women?

Sam from Totally Spies, Jessica Rabbit, Batgirl, Blossom from PPG, the chick from Megas XLR, Poison Ivy, Atomic Betty, Ariel, Misty and Jesse from Pokemon, Kim Possible, Lina Inverse, etc. There's TONS of them. I'm sure you guys can come up with dozens more.

Have you ever sat back and thought about it? You really don't come across true red-heads all that often, and in real life, a Conan O'Brian-ish albino face is not uncommon to find on them. Yet in the animated universe they're sex-bombs... WHY?

Don't get me wrong, I have NOTHING against them... I just think it's the weirdest trend among female toons and wondered if anybody else noticed.

Red heads with blue or green eyes. That's what I'm talk'n bout. And bernets too!

Though I never really noticed that actually. An interesting observation.

It's just the character's design. There's also a lot of black haired and blonde haired heriones, also with girls that have a weird hair color (one anime rule: every color known to man can be a hair color...except clear, if that is a color). It's just coincidence, calm yourself down.

That chick from Megas XLR is Kiva.

And uh...that adult Red Riding Hood girl in those Tex Avery toons.

I don't know many of them, because one red head I DO remember is Molly/Naru from Sailor Moon, and she's NOT a heroine at all.

We also had a share of red headed villains, like Rubeus from Sailor Moon (who is a guy) and Princess from PPG.

EDIT: Oh...before I forgot, Starfire (if she's not mentioned) is a red-headed heroine bombshell.

While there is plenty of girl characters who don't have red hair, there certainly are alot, which I think can PROBABLY be summed in 3 main reasons:

1. THEY'RE EXOTIC.

A. For straight guys and lesbian/bi women, it might just be a little wish-fullfillment or something. NOT that ALL of them are hopeless losers (although I'm sure there's a few), but EVERYONE has some little thing that turns them on. be it either some hair color, types of eyes, sizes of "assests"...

B. ORRRRR it might not even be sexual, but just a plain exotic look, since red-heads ARE rare in real life (natural anyway).

2. CHARACTER PERSONALITY

Red invokes anger, emotion in general, other feelings I'm forgetting when colors' effects are described, like how blue is calming and whatnot. We all know the sterotypess. "Blondes are bimbos, reds are fiery, brunettes are sultry,etc...". Red is OFTEN used on tomboy characters, or just strong-willed characters in general. NOT saying only reds get the job done in cartoons or real life, but that's what happens alot in TVLand.

3. THEY'RE EXOTIC.

A. For...

I was actually just talking to someone about the lack of brunettes in Marvel comic books. Odd. But yeah, I have noticed the overabundance of red-heads in cartoons. I don't see what is so. . . great about them. Blue is the way to go. :D

I don't see what is so. . . great about them. Blue is the way to go. :DGood point. Off-hand, I can only think of a few, like Peter Parker's/Spider-Man's first girlfriend, Betty Brant, then I THINK (its been awhile) the Hulk's love interest, another Betty, then the Scarlet Witch (lots of red, just no hair), and the Wasp (so not ALL of Marvel's brunettes are called Betty :p).

Really, I am? I had no idea. ;)I don't know, are you? :p TRUTH BE TOLD I've only heard that sterotype ONCE  Probably a good thing since less sterotypes, the better. Or least racial ones. Although I'm sure some people hate hair-color sterotypes as well, especially blondes.

Reds have seemed to have exploded more recently though, or maybe it just the generic DTV or run-of-the-mill cartoons seemed to have them. Plus shows that aren'T "run-of-the-mill" shows, like 80's remakes, TMNT (kickin') and He-Man (although S1 was generic, to me anway), turned their brunettes, April and Teela, into reds.

IT BE A CONSPIRACY I TELL'SA!

Oh, and of course Jane Jetson, and Wilma and Pebbles Flintstone. And that little girl duck from Darkwing Duck, with the pigtails.

I'm kicking myself for forgetting Red Riding Hood in my original post. In my mind, there are only THREE 100% cartoon sirens in existence: Betty Boop, Red Riding Hood, and Jessica Rabbit. Why two outta the three gotta be red-heads huh?

I think Sailor Jupiter's hair was more red than brown in the manga. Makes sense that they made it brown, though, brown being a more dominant color.

So if blondes are ditzy:deedee:, red-heads are outgoing :blossom:, and brunettes are sultry :melissa:, then what are the raven-haired beauties, eh? ;)

Maybe it is disturbing that there seems to be an increase in red-headed females in animation... but frankly, who cares! If it eventually leads to there being more red-haired females in the world, then all the power to the creators.

Strangely enough, the excess of redheads in Marvel Comics (Mary Jane, Jean Grey, Medusa, Firestar etc.) has turned me off to them. Personally I prefer dark hair.

When it comes to cartoons, though, it's always good to have characters that stand out, and making them redhead is one way to do it. There's a reason they changed Lois Griffin from blonde to redhead on Family Guy.

Actually when you think about auburn/redheads, and all the comments that have been made, I would like to point out some observations.. Apparently a lot of people see the Redhead as hot, and in fact this goes all the way back in toondom to the Tex Avery Days at MGM. when Tex Created perhaps the Hottest Redhead, and you could say that she was Jessica Rabbit's Grandma.. namely Red Hot Riding Hood..(and yes guys she's a Redhead..)

but if Redheads are so hot, why not say Brunettes are just as hot.. Trixie (From Speed Racer, Shego and Yori From Kim Possible, and in fact Even Kagome and Sango from Inyuyasha fit the bil.. Not to Mention Sailor Mars (Rei) from Sailor Moon. Plus Yuri From Dirty pair...

and what about Blonds? Well here the blonds are played down as "Airheads" yet i've seen some rather Sultry and Sensitive Blonds in my time From Shirley Loon and Minerva mink and Hello Nurse, to Supergirl..and yes blonds can be just as appealing..(in fact Blonds can be Evil like the Brunettes (Take Clover from Totally Spies she can be down right nasty at times..)

but the thing I think as to why guys see redheads as being Hot is because of the fact that Red hair is perhaps the rarest color in terms of hair color.. yet i think that a lot of folks tend to miss out the Personality of the character in General.. after all if you think about it, Each person/Character is perhaps dynamic in their own way..yet the Hair color really doesn't have anything to do with it..

that's just one Coyote's Opinion..

:coyote:

Harley Quinn
01-02-2005, 06:02 AM
The thing is, while they're the rarest in real life, they're VERY popular in animation, so you'd think that would turn animators off from making their heroines redheads, so as not to follow the crowd. Y'know?

And Red Hot Riding Hood's mane was only made red because, duh, she's Red.:wolfie:

Each to their own, since "cute" is entirely one's own opinion. Personally, I don't find Ginger cute in an atractive, sexual way, only a "Hey, that kid is SO cute, me pinch their cheeks" non-attractive way, minus the "pinching cheeks" bit since I'm NO grandma! (Ironically, my grandmothers from both sides of the family don't do that.)

Hmmm, has Janine from the Real Ghostbusters and the Extreme Ghostbusters been listed yet? (Too bad GB3 didn't go through, left EGB with no tie-in to keep it going, it was pretty good.)

In any case, are you really sure redheads are all that common compared to other hair colors? Noticing them is one thing, but an actual COUNT compared to non red heads is something else. I suspect you'd find a lot more blondes then red heads.
