On the surface, Kaname Chidori appears to be a normal, popular high school student. The problem is, she doesn't realize just how popular she is. Unbeknownst to her, a group of terrorists believe she possesses the special powers of "the whispered," and they're out to kidnap her. Enter Sousuke Sagara, a young, hotshot agent from the stealth anti-terrorist organization Mithril. Will he be able to protect Kaname without her finding out what's really going on? Or will he just drive her crazy as he tries to fit in as her awkward, gung-ho, war-crazed classmate?

Get ready for fully-loaded action, full-on intrigue and full-throttle fun! Because once you get into Full Metal Panic!, there's no going back!

An above average series, if somewhat uneven. It's like an equal parts mix of Love Hina, Gundam, and 80's action movies (Sagara's one-man fight in the airfield seems like it was lifted directly from Rambo or Delta Force). Also toss in a sadistic yet greasy looking villain who looks like he moonlights in a hentai flick, and you have a very odd combination. The whole thing reminds me of that movie "If Looks Could Kill" where a student is mistaken for a superspy and has to save his class, get the girl, and defeat the terrorists. Pretty much has all the elements fanboys want.

The plot threads are a little disjointed too, and I wish there was more of an overall story instead of several semi-related arcs. The Behemoth robot could've been the climax of any other series, and the Whispered stuff is talked about but never really expanded on. And the three parter where Sagara goes back to his homeland was just horribly boring and a complete waste of time.

Still if they hadn't made the first series though, they wouldn't have made Fumoffu, which is comedic gold. The focus on the sidestories from the manga let them ramp up the humour, which was forced in the original.

7/10 for FMP, 10/10 for Fumoffu.

You must not have seen Episode 22: The Whispered, in which Kaname and Tessa talk about what the Whispered really are and what they can do.

Unless you like character background development. Without this, we wouldn't understand Sousuke's life before he joined Mithril.

What they can do, yeah, I was thinking more of Kaname's connection to all of it, her background, why she was chosen, etc. Her being a 'whispered' is inconsequential until the plot needs her to retake the ship.

It could've been condensed into a two-parter and not lost anything. I guess long, drawn-out mech fights aren't my thing
