What is the greatest sword fight you've ever seen in a movie?
IMO, the greatest has got to be the sword fight at the end of 1952 film "Scaramouche". Not only was it the greatest, but it also contains what is reported to be the longest fencing duel ever caught on film! This movie was a true classic, and so was the fight scene.

Just about any scene from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that involved a sword was amazing.

- Maximus vs. Commodus, Maximus vs. Praetorian (would-be executioners) in Gladiator, and various other scenes.
- the Bride vs. Oren Ishii and the Crazy 88s.
I can't remember character names in The Last Samurai, but the scene with Cruise and another guy fighting with wooden swords (and other men betting on how many moves until one wins) is one of the best I've ever seen.

There's so many, I guess my favorite would have to come from some HK action flick. Jackie Chan hardly ever uses swords but he weilded a mean one in Drunken Master 2 at the beginning.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, that movie is what I thought of, but I couldn't remember the name.
It really is an amazing fight.
There are sequences that go on for so long uncut, there are so many obstacles, obstructions and other people they are constantly moving through.
Fantastic swashbuckeling goodness.
It's a must see.

Scaramouche, eh? I'll have to find that.
The movie sword fight I most enjoyed was in 007 Die Another Day. Bond and Graves have a dueling contest that starts rather civilly, but after Bond causes Graves to lose his cool, they go wild in the mansion, dueling through various rooms, destroying things around them, scaring off servants and guests, grabbing new and different types of swords, cracking swords, and swinging wildly and forcefully in ways that seem like they could really do some damage.
I also enjoyed Antonio Banderas flirt-dueling against Catherine Zeta Jones in Mask of Zorro for obvious reasons :p

Jet Li vs Donnie Yen in Once Upon a Time in China 2. They actually fought with staves instead of swords but it was amazing.

My favorite swordfight has to be one of the many in The Mask of Zorro, but it's a little hard to choose. I really enjoy Zorro's fight with Captain Love and Don Montero in the hallway and in the courtyard after the map is stolen. The choreography, the direction, that awesome score, all of it really ties together wonderfully. The showdown between Captain Love and Zorro at the end is rightfully the best out of the bunch, and it even has some well written exchanges to boot. Course, there is that fight with Catherine Zeta Jones and Zorro in the barn too...

What is the greatest sword fight you've ever seen in a movie?May not be the greatest, but I think my favorite was De la Vega vs Montero in "The Mask of Zorro". I think it was the weight of everything that had happened to Don Diego and what he was fighting for that did it for me. Zorro vs Captain Love, which was happening at the same time, was pretty sweet, too.
As far as actual choreography, I loved Maul vs Obi-wan and Qui-gon.

The swordfight between Nameless and Sky in Hero was pretty badass, so I'll go with that.

Wesley vs. Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. It wasn't so much of an intense fight, as it was just plain fun to watch. "I am not left-handed."
The sword-play in Crouching Tiger was good, as well. I think I enjoyed the fight between Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeow the most.

I always enjoyed the fight in Blade between La Magra (Deacon Frost) and Blade. The fight went 100 mph and only got more intense.

Yeah, that was gonna be my vote. Sir Guy versus Robin rocks.
I have to give props to Empire Strikes Back as well though.

Gladiator with Russel Crow. The sword fight when he was famously known as the "Spaniard" was pretty awesome. He did that scissor type motion with two swords leaving his opponent headless.

Best sword (lightsaber) fight in a trailer: Episode 3 Revenge of the j... oops I mean of the Sith.
Favorite sword fight (fencing) movie: Cyrano de Bergerac
Can't express how awesome his fighting is in that movie.
Swashbuckling is cool...

While rapier fights don't usually float my boat, I'll have to check out this Scaramouche.
I'm leaning toward the one toward the end of Rob Roy, where Rob is up against the Englishman who raped his wife. Rob Roy fights with a claymore, the other guy fights with a rapier, and after getting stabbed several times, Robby grabs the rapier by the blade while it's still in him and with the other hand just up and cleaves the jerk from shoulder to sternum. Huzzah! :D
Several of the fights from the 13th Warrior make me very happy, as does most of Conan. Conan doesn't really have good swordsmanship, just good 'feeling' of swordsmanship. And Highlander Endgame did have some dang good stuff. I'll keep thinking, I don't really have a solid answer yet.
