Yes, starting Christmas Eve at 8PM, TBS will begin their "24 Hours of A Christmas Story." (Followed by "Home Alone" right after it ends on Christmas night.)

It has to be A Christmas Story for me. I always make an effort to watch that movie during the Turner marathons on Christmas. A little weird to have it on TBS and not TNT this year, but whatever.

Well, I haven't seen a lot of X-Mas movies (including the ones that start with "A Christmas...") but I love Jingle All the Way. People say it's horrible, I love it. The animated Grinch is great also. But my favorite is probably Batman Returns. You just can't get anymore of that christmas spirit without watching it. :D

I stayed offline on Christmas & a day or two before, so here are my late entries on the favorites list:

1. It's A Wonderful Life (1947).

2. A Christmas Carol (1951) starring the incomparable Alastair Sim, "the once and future Scrooge," the man who owns the role of Scrooge, along with a simply perfect cast all the way around.

3. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) -- nobody but nobody has the Santa Claus twinkle in the eyes like Edmund Gwenn.

Our family watches 'em all every year ... and sometimes How the Grinch Stole Christmas as well.

It's a Wonderful Life

A Christmas Carol - George C. Scott as Scrooge (He does the best job as Scrooge by far, and the other actors put on great performances as well. This version perfectly captures all of the story's emotion -- and all of its subtle humor.)

A Christmas Story (The ridiculously eloquent narrations just never get old.)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (Probably the one I watch the least, since it's half Christmasy and half Halloweeny, but in the grand scheme of things this is probably my favorite of these movies.)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean (It's not really a movie and it doesn't particularly get my Christmas spirits up, but it sure is funny.)

1. Christmas Vacation (you got to love aunt Edna)Aunt Edna was only in the first movie, National Lampoon's Vacation.

I would say the five best Christmas movies are Christmas Vacation, Bad Santa, Love Actually, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I suppose Home Alone. Honorable mentions go to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Jingle All The Way, and The Santa Clause.

Of course, there are some other excellent movies that take place during Christmas, such as Trading Places and Die Hard, but I don't think we should count them as Christmas movies if the Christmas theme isn't prevalent enough.

When my mom used to wrap X-Mas gifts (before being lazy and just going with gift bags), she always watched The Sound of Music.

Personally, I've developed a sort-of an X-Mas tradition where I watch the Love Hina Christmas Movie and Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz every Christmas, and starting this year I add Invader Zim: The Most Horrible X-mas Ever to that list.

I meant to add this to my original post -- I saw A Christmas Story once in high school and I thought it was really stupid. It baffles me that it's so beloved. Maybe people think it's the same thing as The Wonder Years? It's not. The Wonder Years was, you know, good. If we're ever going to be a reasonably intelligent planet, we can't keep kidding ourselves. Stop watching A Christmas Story.

And it baffles me that you think it's stupid, and that you prefer Jingle All the Way. So there.

I've never seen The Wonder Years, though. But what I do know is that A Christmas Story is a very intelligent comedy, which doesn't mean that people who don't like it are stupid, but it does seem to me like the kind of movie that stupid people wouldn't like very much. Most of the humor comes from the juxtaposition of childhood simplicity with extremely eloquent narration, like when he describes opening presents as diving into the veritable cornucopia with unbridled avarice.

Most of the humor comes from the juxtaposition of childhood simplicity with extremely eloquent narration, like when he describes opening presents as diving into the veritable cornucopia with unbridled avarice. To me, parts of it got old pretty quick, and certain other parts weren't even funny to begin with (the whole "you'll poke your eye out" thing). Also, they kinda screw with the adult/child juxtaposition by having the kid constantly curse. I tried watching part of it again this year, and it was even more insufferable. But we'll have to agree to disagree.

As for Jingle All The Way, it's a very simple movie (guy has to buy toy for Christmas) sprinkled with some hilarious moments. And seeing Arnold in it never gave me the feeling of dread I got from that trailer to The Pacifier (Vin Diesel as a nanny). He's pretty good in it, as are Sinbad and all the minor players he comes across throughout the day. It also happens to contain one of Phil Hartman's funniest roles.

Also, they kinda screw with the adult/child juxtaposition by having the kid constantly curse.

In my experience, children among themselves tend to use more profanity than adults among themselves. Also the specific words used (especially the one kid who calls everyone "smartass") strike me as the sorts of things children say-- just bad enough to make them seem "cool" to each other, but still shying away from perceived "worse" words like the almight Eff Dash Dash Dash Word. I thought that was one of the cuter and more perceptive bits of the film.

SirLemming

He cursed, like, 3 times!

But as I said, I feel about Jingle All the Way how you feel about A Christmas Story, so that's that. Except I do enjoy Jingle All the Way because it's the entertaining kind of bad.

-TerminatahBless you. I saw it twice in high school and I felt exactly the same way. I don't hate A Christmas Story, but it also baffles me how a 24-hour marathon is viewed as good programming and everyone says its their "Favorite Holiday Movie." I haven't seen it in so long I can't say "these are the parts I didn't like" I just didn't think it was that good.
