Well, a few months ago, Paul Storrie posted on these boards that he was in the process of developping something he thought we'd enjoy....

HE HAS:)

Ever since I saw the Gotham Girls website, I thought the same thing: Make it a comic!!! Now with Mr. Storrie writing, I know we'll get some quality stuff! If only I knew who the heck the artist is (see the news page!) I am also really glad Renee Montoya is getting some limelight. She's always taken back-back seat in the animated comics next to Bullock. She deserves the time. I wonder if they will show Barbara at the police station? In TNBA, she was supposed to be working there part-time, I think, and studying to become an officer. In "Torch Song" you see her typing there, but I don't think they ever really explored it.

I do find it slightly ironic that this series will come out before Dini and Timm's "Harley and Ivy" miniseries, which was thought up early seven+ years ago! I hope this series won't cause buyers to be less interested in seeing Dini and Timm's "H+I" if and when it comes out.

All in all, I'm thrilled!!! Justice League Adventures is out, Gotham Adventures will be visited by two great artists from TBA's past (PLEASE GOD LET ONE BE TY!!!), we'll (soon?) have a Gotham Girls miniseries, Superman Adventures will go out on a High Note (though I'll still be crying :( ), plus a new JL toy line and show, and the DVD'S (SEASON BOX SETS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!) and DTV's in production....WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!

I was worried Batman animted was starting to fade, but as Gotham Adventures #1 said:

dude, this is sooooooo frickin awsome!!!!!!!!!

OMG all my favorite girls get a mini together!!!!!

seriously, this is way cool, but I think there needs to be interaction inbeteen the girls, like they all need to encounter eachother or something, and there neeeds to be fights. at least one per ish! ;)

also, whats with Montoya bein in there? I think the last isue should be like all the regular girls meeting up, not a montoya ish! O well, Ill get over it eventually

This is great news! Hopefully they'll stick closely to the animated style, but the story is most likely gonna be great. Can't go wrong with Storrie!!!

I not only love this idea, but I want **more** animated mini-series and one shots.

Doing TAS comics in those formats then you can stuff thats more on par with the quality of the shows on which they are based since DC insists on aiming the TAS monthlies at kids. Or rather aiming them at kids in the "lets water it down to the point where it drowns" sense.

and as always, I love having an alternative to the mainline stuff!
Cant wait for this to come out!

I think this kind of project shows the ambition and excited nature that has been missing from recent animated comics of late. This is definatly a poor period for the animated comics. Batman Beyond was cancelled just when the stories were improving. Superman Adventures was treated badly when Millar left, but will go out on a good note and may even address (finally!!) Legacy. Justice League Adventures is off to a shaky start. And as for Batman: Gotham Adventures....well...let's not go there for now. The prespect of this mini-series is something that is sorely needed for the animated line. Not only will it possibly boost the sales of the animated comics, but the potential for cross promition may help the mini-series to healthy sales.

Plus the crew behnd is is perfect! I've seen Jennifer Graves work before and it is great! With the right inker (Terry Beatty) it will be dead on perfect. Plus...Paul Storrie. The main who wrote arguable the best Batman Beyond story helming the project. He has the ambition and got the ball rolling himself. He wasn't asked but did this himelf. Just knowing that, i think this series will definatly be a cut above the rest.

I think you said it all there, DG. Can't wait for this to come out...

James Harvey

Would it be ironic if this series ends up boosting the animated line? I just wonder becuase the talent behind this mini-series is impressive and the website tie-in can't hurt...

TerryMcGuiness
11-26-2001, 05:31 PM
They actually might make better sales and be better off doing specials, mini-series and graphic novels with the animated line instead of a monthly.

For instance, imagine a mini-series or graphic novel that chronicled the post-Legacy years of Superman leading up to Justice League?

and get top talent on these to. People who can either do the aniamted style or whose own style could fit in with minor adjustments. Steve Rude maybe?

Bobby Boy 101

I wanna see something of a mini where they actually show the toughness of characters that are, in a way, percepted as weak and pushovers (re: Catwoman, and um. . .. wait, I dont really care about that Clock King guy!)

anyway, I hope this to get the animated ppl to realize the mojority public wants the animated books/mini's to feature COSTUMED villains, not some crap "Story of Joe" like we've been gettin for the past year and a half!

AND THERE HAD BETTER BE FABULOUS ANIMATED ARTISTS OUT THERE DOING THAT GOTHAM GIRLS MINI!!!

not some crap artist who's been doind some animated work lately (no names mentioned)

James Harvey
11-27-2001, 11:49 AM
The artist doing GOTHAM GIRLS is very talented, so I'm not worried about the art. I think Storrie will rpesent the heroines as they should be, but they don't have to be tough to be good characters.

Bobby Boy 101

good points, Im just tired of seeing Catwoman kicked around by rookies like Red Claw and Roxy Rocket, the same with Talia beating the living crap outta Babs.

STILL, I guess everyone has different opinions on who-can-beat-who and that kind of stuff.

anyway, now that ive gotton us off on the wrong track, lets get back to topic. . . .

I'm also hoping for a good colorist. The current colorist on JUSTICE LEAGUE ADVENTURES shows that it's very possible the books can get bogged down with shoddy coloring.

Gee, Dis, yer gonna make me blush!

Glad you're excited about the upcoming GG mini. It's been pretty tough not cackling gleefully about this while it's been in development. I think it'll be fun for fans of TAS and those who only watch the webisodes.

I'm working on the Renee Montoya issue right now and I've got to say it's a blast. Hopefully the readers will agree. (Expect an "animated series" approach to what Rucka and Brubaker are talking about with their cool new Gotham Central book, at least for Renee's issue in the spotlight.)

Quick apologies -- sorry for not jumping in sooner. I've been busy with some major computer problems. Oh, and writing Gotham Girls!

Glad you're looking forward to it, BB.

Not much new to tell at this point. The project isn't on the schedule yet (I don't think) but work is proceeding at a furious pace, editor extraordinaire Joan Hilty is pleased with the scripts so far and I'm looking very much forward to seeing more stuff from exceptional artist Jennifer Graves.

Bobby,

Just to clear up a couple misconceptions --

First, all the Gotham Girls are interacting throughout the series. Although each issue focuses on one of them, they're not a bunch of solo stories. Plenty of interaction, plenty of fights, plenty of fun.

Second, Renee Montoya's issue doesn't wrap the series. Batgirl's does. That said, I think that you'll enjoy the Montoya issue just as much as the rest. I know I'm having an even better time writing it.

DG,

I kinda liked the debut issue of Justice League Adventures and I hope you'll give it another shot next week for my first JL Adv. tale!

Right now I'm very, very jazzed about what Jennifer is going to do on Gotham Girls. Her animated style stuff is very cool. Not sure who the rest of the creative team is just yet but knowing editor Joan Hilty, each and every one will be top notch!

Thanks for the kind words about Batman Beyond. Keep up the flattery and I'm gonna get all flustered.

It's no problem, Paul! We're just excited to see you pop in here! Anychance you could tell us who's on the creative crew. Like for inking, coloring, and lettering. I'm hoping for a REALLY good colorist. JLAdventures got stuck with a sub-par colorist and I'd hate to see that happen to your mini-series. I like how you describe your approach to Montoya in your mini-series. I am really looking forward to Gotham Central and definatly Gotham Girls. I'm surprised DC would greenlight an animated comic mini-series, becuase all I hear is how low the sale are and how the sales can't support double sized issues. I'm glad you were able to find your way around that. Plus - having a popular webisode website to help cross promote can't help either!

Nothing new to report on the creative team yet. I'm sure Joan Hilty has got them all picked out but we haven't discussed it yet. With Joan's track record for picking talent, you can be sure they'll be good!

I'm really hoping that Renee Montoya's issue is as popular with fans as it is with me. It's great to have a chance to put a little of my own stamp on a character who hasn't seen as much screen time as the rest.

As for how/why DC would greenlight Gotham Girls right now, all I can say is that there has been an overwhelmingly positive response from all the fine folks at DC. We're all excited about the project and I guess they're hoping that carries over to the fanbase. Like you, I'm hoping that the cross-promotional possibilites between the webisodes and the book add up to more readers for us and more viewers for them!

It will be nice to see more of her in the comic. I can barely think of when Montoya got screentime in the comic. I know there may have been an episode or two when Renee got the spotlight, even for a breif time. It will be nice to see more of her. That is for sure.

Not to change topics Mr. Storrie, but do you read the pages of Gotham Adventures? I think it would totally rock to get a rotating creative team, or mainly, a story from you, published in an issue, just to mix things up a bit. I love the book but it's been struggling a bit and I think some new or familiar blood may just be what it needs. Are you interested? Is it even possible?

To quote Batman from "The Cat and The Claw Part II":

"You hear things I don't!"

- as in, would a fill-in issue by you go over well with DC? Do you have any idea of what the exects are saying lately about Batman: Gotham Adventures? I'm not asking you to say anything you're not supposed to mind you, but from what I've heard, unfortunately, things aren't going well with the original animated title. Though your upcoming mini-series will surely boost sales, I'm worried it it may be too late for B: GA. Do you know if it will be getting a new creative team, a rotating creative team, stay with the current creative team or if it will be cancelled? Thanks for dropping by and responding! You're great!

JH,

I know she's shown up a few times in TAS comics and she's definitely been explored a bit more in her "regular series" incarnation. Can't think of any particular issues that focused on her so far, though.

Hopefully I'll do her justice.

Dis,

I do read (and enjoy) Gotham Adventures regularly.

Sure, I'd be happy to jump in and lend a hand if Scott ever needed one but he seems pretty on top of things. I haven't had the chance to write Batman much (Bruce Wayne, that is) and I'd love to do more.

Anything like that would be up to the fine folks at DC (and Scott, of course). For now, though, Gotham Adventures is a book that I can just sit back and read without worrying about what I'd do next issue.

Can't fill you in on any behind-the-scenes stuff. That's all between editorial, marketing and the current creative staff. No reason why I'd be in the loop on it.

Best,
PDS

I know ya will, Paul! If you ever get stuck on writing that issue, I recommend you watch the episode POV (which will rerun in January on CN). It's a Montoya focused episode that gives us a good insight into her personality.

Bio information on Montoya is a bit skimpy, in both the comics and the animated series. There were a few issues of BATMAN CHRONICLES which spotlighted her. Also, there was a great Montoya story in DETECTIVE COMICS (#747 I think) that focused on her life. The comic features her on the cover, so it should be easy to find. The bio here at WF is pretty skimpy, but the best one I've seen online:

http://www.toonzone.net/worldsfinest/worldsfinestpage/montoya.htm

Hopefully this'll help out, as well.

JH,

Thanks. That may be one I've already checked but it can't hurt to take another look.

I'm not really worrying about the background of Montoya in the regular series. Although I've read several of the stories "in continuity" I think that it's more important to be true to her as she appears in the TV show first, then to make her as interesting as possible second. The background from the regular books will certainly influence me but I don't feel bound by it.

More towards the animated version? Well - that will definatly be welcome. I've found that they have only really scratched the surface in the cartoons. She's had maybe a dozen appearance, and most of those being cameos or bit parts. It'll be nice to get to see more of her in her animated form. It'll be nice to add some history to the character in the animated background.

Not much more than the WF version..in fact, it's probably identicle..cept for the last sentence..which reads:

Montoya has been given a promotion by Commissioner Gordon since we last saw her, from officer on the beat, to a full-fledged detective.

Anyway...I'm lookin' forward to this comic...:)

Yup, Renee is definitely a full-fledged detective in Gotham Girls. In fact, we get to see her first solo case.
