View Full Version : New Fist of the North Star Show/Review Talkback (Spoilers)
Desslar sez: People who prefer a fair degree of subtlety in their anime may feel the whole thing is a bit basic, but quite frankly if you can’t enjoy some good old fashioned brain splattering, well, you’re already dead. (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=129371)

"Anyway blood and guts spray all over the place, even more graphically than before if you can imagine that. This incarnation actually treats us to individual organs flying through the air."
I can't imagine anything as brutal as what I saw in the OAV movie from Streamline.

Hokuto No Ken is an anime I have a hard time seeing with modern animation. It's a show which is, in my opinion, firmly entrenched in the period it came out--the 80s. The cheesy music, bad animation, ugly designs...it all added up to something that was more charming than it should be. There are plenty of hyper violent anime out there...but HNK had something more...cheese! Great, tasty cheese at that!

I personally love Tetsuo Hara's designs, and like the original TV series better than the new series. The new series has GREAT animation and effects, but the stories are too vague at this point. I really wish someone would snatch the rights from Manga and release a full sub version of all of the original series.

Cheesy music? Ugly designs? The chosen songs aren't exactly big favorites of mine, but they are contemporary and at least sort of rock, which can't be said for most anime music these days. I don't really see a problem with the designs, and I'm glad they didn't mess with them for this update.
Is the whole thing a bit cheesy? Sure, but like you say it's darn tasty. Just leave your brain at the door - safely out of Kenshiro's reach.

I'm amazed about the big debt recent Gundam Seed episodes have owed this show.

Like "Fist of the North Star" invented those!
Wait, actually, I'd buy that.

"In Volume 1's Behind the Scenes featurette, ADV producer Charles Campbell conducts a by-the-numbers interview with the main English cast. This isn’t terribly gripping unless you’re an aspiring voice actor."
So this guy is saying that you can't be interested in the voice actors unless you're going to become one yourself? Well then, I guess I should stop being interested. Pssht. Whatever.
Note: I don't care how good or bad the actor is; if I know who it is, I'll watch a feature with him/her. Hell, I only bought Vol. 1 of Angelic Layer (which I have since gotten rid of) for the commentary with Andy McAvin (Icchan) and Jessica Boone (Misaki)!

No, I think you misunderstood me. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I'm not saying that an interview with voice actors can't be interesting, just that THIS one isn't. If you watch it you'll see. The producer asks the EXACT same question one at a time to all 4 voice actors, and often by the fourth respondent there's nothing left to say. That is not the way panel interviews are normally conducted, for obvious reasons. Also, besides Robert Kraft (who, as I said, IS interesting) the actors' responses are very brief and short on charisma. So while this could have been an interesting extra, unfortunately it doesn't turn out that way.

I don't think the Monster Island actors care about their work. Maybe if the show was dubbed at IS&M it would've been better, because over there they love anime.
