View Full Version : The funniest/stupidest Internet game rumors you've ever heard?

We've all seen them. GameFAQs. Some lonely message board. A major one. Even here. And some of them are so silly you know they're fake the moment you set eyes on them.
I have two tied for the best ever in my book. The first is that you can fight the three main characters from The Bouncer in the Collosseum in Kingdom Hearts, and the second....Ready?
You can unlock Prof. Oak as a hidden final boss in Pokémon R/B/Y, and fight HIM, not Pokémon. How does that work? HE SHOOTS DEAD POKEMON AT YOU OUT OF A BLUE STRAW.

On the old WWFGames website, there was a post that said, "Go through 50 seasons on WWF Smackdown! 2 to unlock Table Tornado Tag Team Match." Which in reality you can earn the match in about an hour in season mode.:)

I can't really remember specifics anymore, but the first three Mortal Kombat games had some of the most rediculous rumors I've ever heard. Then they took some of those rumors and implemented them for the next games.
Luigi in Super Mario 64
Mew under the truck in Pokemon Red/Blue
And it wasn't on a message board, but a magazine...
Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Mew under the truck in Pokemon Red/Blue.
I wasted more time than I should have trying to get that to work. Granted, an hour or two is no long period of time for most tasks, but to just be standing in one spot, trying to move a truck, failing, trying again, wash, repeat, is almost humiliating on a very instinctual level.

This isn't so much a rumor rather than a kid being an idiot, so I just had to post this. "PlayStation 2's, if you press the right buttons can launch a nuclear missle because Sadaam Hussein had them programmed to do so." I'm not lying, a kid, in high school at the time, tried to claim that.
Of course the numerous bogus codes for Mario 64 for N64. Codes to get Luigi (including beat all four gamesaves with all 120 stars in a certain amount of time, and other impossible codes), unlock Wario through the caterpillar boss, and somehow, somebody had a code to get Mario to run around in his boxers.
Let's not forget the lame Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 codes. "Unlock Sonya and Kano in MK 2", "Get Brutalities, Nudalities, and Animalities in MK2", and "Get Santa Clause in Mortal Kombat 1." Whenever I asked someone for the codes, they were like "Yeah, uh we can't show you."
Some were funny, some were annoying. :)

I would have to say the "Megaton" rumors.
Everybody remember those? Some third-rate Japanese gaming publication brings word of a "Megaton-level" announcement soon to come from Nintendo, and every fanboy on the planet (and some professionals who should have known better like IGN and Games Are Fun) totally latches onto it. Rumors are many and varied, including everything from Nintendo buying Sega to the unveiling of online functionality for the Gamecube. Eventually it turns out to be some botched translation and the news piece was referring to an obscure Japanese licensed game that would never come to America anyway.
Textbook example of the community overdoing it, and a lesson I wish was heeded by more.

Yeah, and those weren't even internet rumors, those were freakin gaming magazines! EGM had a thing about unlocking a black guy who could kick your head off and even had pictures that were sent in by someone(I assume they were doctored). Then there was Smoke, who some people claimed were in Mortal Kombat 1, but didn't appear till 2. Then there was supposedly a hidden character named Emerald on MK2 who looked like Kitana and Mileena...
Oh, and let's not forget the swear code for MK1. Supposedly you could make Scorpion say "Get the **** over here!" and make the anouncer say "****ing excellent!"
I also remember hearing about a fake code in Pokemon Red/Blue about "Bill's Secret Garden." I forget what you had to do to get there, but Bill would take you to his secret garden and supposedly give you an egg that would later hatch into Togepi.

The wide spread ressurection of Aeris rumours and how that an uncle in Square confirmed there was meant to be a way.. and that the man in the pipe in Midgar was the key..
All totally ridiculous from the stories perspective which is built on the death of Aeris... no way was she ever meant to return, but many fans bought this unsubstantiated and silly report anyhow.

As someone who has put over 200 hours into Halo 2, I can say that the changes are numerous (even if they aren't amazingly drastic), and if you can't see them you obviously aren't trying.
Howevert, the story wasn't anywhere near completed IMO, and I've also heard rumors (even from EGM) that the next game in the series is going to come out sooner than anyone is expecting.

Megaton.
I find this the funniest rumor because Nintendo fans were waiting, what, 5 months for this "Major announcement?" Even after the thing was proven to be a mistranslation, most fans still claimed that Nintendo and SEGA were merging.
Anything that involves unfreezning Zora's Domain or the Triforce in "Zelda: Ocarina of Time".
There used to be also tons of rumors about a sixth playable character in Mario RPG, one of them being Luigi.

My friend told me that he heard a rumor saying you could unlock Spawn in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur 2.There are two possiblities:
1. All three bonus characters are in the source code, meaning that any of them could be unlocked if someone hacked the game. It is highly unlikely that Namco did this because it would mean that there is a possibility that Link would be accessed on an Xbox or PS2, in which case Namco would go under by the time Nintendo was through with them.
2. The three bonus characters are only coded into the version they are ment to appear in. This is the most likely what happened, meaning that Spawn will never been playable outside the Xbox version.

I remember I one time joined an anime club(big mistake). All the members of that group believed in a lot of ridiculous rumors, like in the Japanese version you could bring Aeris back to life by beating the Ruby Weapon(the Ruby Weapon wasn't in the Japanese version), and that in the Japanese version there was a graphic sex scene between Cloud and Tifa. Oh, and one person claimed he had accidentally made it to the second disc with Aeris still alive. Just to be sure, that's not possible is it? There's no glitch where you can make it to the second disc with Aeris still alive is there?

No, Nimbus Terafaux wasn't a ninja, he was just a black guy without a shirt on. His finishing move was that he did a flip and knocked the guy's head off. I can't believe nobody brought up the Lara Croft nude code. Even after numerous denials from Core employees, people STILL insisted the code was in there. And the ironic thing is, when people actually made a nude patch, it sucked royally.
Anyway, I've got one that took place between me and a couple friends. In Sonic 2, in the second Chemical Plant level, one of my friends said that if you jumped down into the pit at a certain area, you'd get unlimited lives, get all the Chaos Emeralds, AND become Super Sonic. Then of course, the other friend fell for it, fell in the pit, and died. "Oh, you didn't do it right- you didn't jump in exactly the right spot. Try it again." :D
I was browsing the SSBM boards on GameFAQs, and there are still people asking how to get Sonic and Tails.
How anyone fell for that joke in the first place is beyond me.

Ummm...you mean the PS2 didn't revolutionize gaming?
God no... it was just a PSOne upgrade. Just another system like any other and all before it.

Although I don't think Angel of Darkness had much of those nude rumors/patches because, well, by that time nobody cared. I sure didn't. :p

I think people (here especially) get "revolutionary hardware" confused with "home of revolutionary games". Nothing past the 32/64 bit era has been "revolutionary" to the industry (at least hardware wise).

Actually, the kids version of Conker wasn't a rumor. It was a fact. Conker's Bad Fur Day is much different from what the game was originally.
Conker's BFD used to be known as Twelve Tales: Conker 64, which looked like a very colorful and very cute Banjo-Kazooie clone.
Twelve Tales continued to get delayed and delayed and delayed and then Rare presented the revised version of Twelve Tales. It had become Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Not to mention Conker was in Diddy Kong Racing and had his own game for the Game Boy Color called Conker's Pocket Tales.

Correct. I was very much looking forward to the game too. Nintendo Power did alot of stories/articles on it.

The home of revolutionary games is the Dreamcast. Life/sim martial art dramas, Samba de Amigo, and the first to take the action online.
Recognize.
Sony's marketing department revolutionized how games were marketed, tho.

Sony's marketing department revolutionized how games were marketed, tho.But Dreamcast died a failure
and many of those games moved onto other systems...
also Samba DeAmigo while fun, with those maracca controlers it was a bit too pricey
Also the default DC controlers were poorly designed...really, sega coulda just used the Saturn pads agains, heck they re-released the saturn pads for PS2...

It died a failure in the eyes of the heartless... and business-wise. But to those who enjoyed and continue to enjoy the experience, the Dreamcast will never die.
And while the games moved on, it was still the first home for the truely revolutionary and innovative.

Indeed. Shall I point out the wondering homebrew and emulation community for the DC?

Indeed. Shall I point out the wondering homebrew and emulation community for the DC?All dead systems have emulation communities
heck someguy transcribed the original GTA onto the NES
it may have been the first but it didn't make that much of an impact
like the Master System used analog controlers when NES and others didn't, however it was the Playstaion that defined it as a mainstay
and like how the Backstreet Boys were outdone by NSync
being first doesn't mean anything without success
Besides I think after beating Shenmue, Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Toy Commander, to name a few, the DC's gems were conquered
and thus it was put on the shelf with it's ancestors, Genesis, 32X, and Gamegear
