In the comics:
Once upon a time, there was a planet full of really old, powerful guys. This planet was named Oa and its inhabitants, the Oans, decided to become the Guardians of the Universe. Their first goal was to create an intergalactic police force. Their first attempt was to create Manhunter robots with little sticks that could do various things. The Manhunters ended up not working out, so the Oans next decided to create the Green Lantern Corps using sentient beings from various planets instead of the unreliable robots.
In the cartoon:
It seems unclear, but I inferred that the Manhunters were at least working with the Oans if not for the Oans.

The whole "Manhunters" thing must be odd in JL...I mean, what does J'onn have to do with them? Is he not "The Martian Manhunter"? How do the names relate, if at all?

The names are just coincedence. J'onn doesn't relate to the Manhunters at all.

its odd that they hadnt refered to jonzz as martian manhunter yet. people who arent familiar w/ the comics probably have no idea he has a 'superhero' name.

I'm fairly sure that they're only going to refer to him as J'onn in this series. At any rate I like that name better than MM.

After a while you get used to J'onn J'onzz, anything else sounds or looks weird...

Yeah, after reading the comics for so long, it bugs me when anyone calls him anything other than J'onn.
