View Full Version : 2005 looks like an awesome year for movies!

Is anyone else as excited as I am about the movies coming out next year??
Well, if you're a comic book geek like me, we get a few big treats in '05.... starting with Elektra in January...
which may or may not have an Affleck cameo
...then Constantine in February, and then Batman Begins and Fantastic Four by the time we get to summer.
We finally get Star Wars Episode III.
War of the Worlds sounds promising, considering it's the original "alien invasion" story that has inspired so many others, and Spielberg and Cruise are involved.
We get a sequel to The Ring.
We get Tim Burton's take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
White Noise, which comes out in January, looks awesome! Has anyone else seen the trailer for this? I love how it starts out looking like a documentary before it goes into the actual film scenes... and how long has it been since Michael Keaton had a starring role??
We also get Meet The Fockers, at long last! (All right, technically that one starts in 2004, but only by a week or so!)
There are probably more that I am forgetting, but that's a pretty solid list. So what is everyone looking forward to?

From those, I'm looking forward to WAR OF THE WORLDS and BATMAN BEGINS. (Though I don't know how they plan to get WotW out by summer; didn't they only just start filming a couple weeks ago?) I may give FANTASTIC FOUR a chance even though I don't like some of the casting choices. Haven't heard of WHITE NOISE before, but I'd like to see Michael Keaton in something good again.

Yes, next year will indeed be a good year for movies! I went to a ton of concerts in '04 and it looks like I'll be doing the same thing in '05, but in a theatre.

Eh, every year looks like a great year for movies before it begins and the new release list is (mostly) just on paper. Once we start seeing some more trailers for the big summer blockbusters, I'm sure we'll seperate the wheat from the chaff a little more. (-:
Don't mind me, I'm just feeling ambivalent about movies right now because after Meet the Fockers-- which I'll see because my girlfriend wants to, but I'm skeptical just because sequels to comedies have a poor track record-- we descend into the January/February movie doldrums. That long dark teatime of the soul between the end of the boom of Christmas family films and the start of the summer blockbusters in April or May.

I'm going to have to disagree. I think 2005 looks like a poor year from this point in time. The only movie that I'm looking foreward to is Episode III. That's just a need, having followed Star Wars all the way through up to this point. I'm hoping that there may be some good suprises, but I'm pretty skeptical after looking at the upcoming movies on imdb.

Didn't they released Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Special DVD already?

Didn't they released Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Special DVD already? No. They released Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, made in 19-something-or-other. Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is coming out in 2005.
But in regards to Samurai Matt's list, isn't Cars delayed until 2006? And I could've sworn Wallace & Gromit was also 2006, although I haven't really heard ANYTHING about that for a long, long time.

With the delays of Serenity, Cars, and Wallace and Gromit the only movie I'm interested in is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Although I will probably see Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith out of curiousity.

Forgot about SERENITY. Definitely want to see that! But it's been delayed? What happened?

Looking forward to those that have already been mentioned. But probably the movie that no really cares about but me is the sequel to Underworld. Underworld: Evolution comes out the first weekend of December 2005. It started filming mid November. The first movie was made for not a whole lot of money, was successful enough that a sequel was granted. I don't know, I really loved the first one and can't wait for part 2.
Everyone is back and the historys of Viktor and Selene are fleshed out more. Some of the movie takes place in mediveal times and we get a pretty good battle sequence from that time period.

Even though I'm expecting them to be mediocre films like the others, I'm nevertheless really looking forward to Star Wars 3 and Harry Potter 4 because I'm such a fanboy.
Also, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe.

Forgot about SERENITY. Definitely want to see that! But it's been delayed? What happened?Universal didn't want it competing with the summer blockbusters. Look for it in early 2006.
It's Firefly on Fox all over again.

Wouldn't that qualify as a prequel, then? I'll see it when it comes out. IMO, the movies had the second best werewolf transformations - second to Van Helsing. (hate the movie all you want. you know those werewolves were awesome. :p )

No. They released Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, made in 19-something-or-other.1968, I believe. Or maybe it wasn't? I'll have to check on IMDb.
I'm cautiously optimistic this year. There were a lot of movies I was anxiously anticipating for 2004 that left me dissappointed.

I can't wait for Harry Potter and the Globet of Fire! Looks like a good movie to me!
I also can't wait for Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. Looks great, too!
Willy Wonka... hmm, it won't do better than two of the movies I'm looking forward to, but I'm also looking foward to this, too!
War of the Worlds sounds interesting.
I'll have to agree that 2005 could be an awesome year for movies, but I'll wait and see to find that out...

The tops on my list at this point in time (and trust me, it will change) are:
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith
Spaceballs 2
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Toy Story 3
I may just have to see The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe as well.

There's really only three that I'm especially looking forward too. Batman Begins, Star Wars Ep III, and The Lion The With and the Wardrobe. War of the Worlds sounds intruiging, but it's not on my must see list or anything. At least not yet anyway. I'm still iffy on Fantastic Four.

2004 was better. These superhero movies are running out of superheroes--and the clout of being something that isn't seen once a month. I don't know much about Elektra, but that movie just looks weird. She had no "powers" in Daredevil, nor did she meet a woman who could throw snakes, or whatever that tenth-of-a-second image was supposed to be.
And these fantasy movies are getting crowded with me-too offerings from every studio..."McMagic" as Ursula K. LeGuin said(and that should become a thrown-around term now, really. It's good). Computer-animated movies will also lose their punch as a ton of them flood the market. I have every reason to believe 2005 won't make as much money as 2004.
