View Full Version : Whedon: X-Men 3 or Wonder Woman
Spider-Man

It looks like WB is putting Fox in a tough situation once again. After snatching up X2's Bryan Singer tofinally get Superman onscreen WB might be doing it again. Apparently Whedon is really close to signing for X-Men 3 but WB is trying to sway him over to do a live-action Wonder Woman feature.
This is all rumor right now and this was reported by Ain't It Cool so there's a gigantic chance it's all not true. Still this is pretty interest. I find Wonder Woman to be a dull, lifeless, clay husk of a character but if anyone could make the character actually interesting - it is Whedon! He has a knack for writing some of the strongest females around and I thinkhe could make Wonder Woman interesting - something she hasn't been in years.
But Whedon is also the best bet for the next X-men movie. He could definitely wrap everything up and move the franchise to the next level. He gets these characters and understands them. His work in Astonishing X-Men shows this. He is the best choice to helm this movie.
Here is the rumor report from Ain't It Cool:
Dear Moriarty, Harry and Herc:
I've sent in the odd movie review to Harry before, but never something like this. This is so good, so COOL - and so confirmed by multiple sources (hey, people hang out with work friends), that I wanted to give Ain't It Cool the world exclusive on this.
Joss Whedon is in final negotiations with Joel Silver and Warner Bros. to write and direct WONDER WOMAN for Summer 2006. Joss Whedon. Joel Silver. WONDER WOMAN. 2006. That's right, baby!!! Ain't it cool?
The only possible thing standing in this picture's way is X-MEN 3. I know what's been said, but Fox is still coming after him hard to direct that, and that's a tough thing for a guy like Joss to pass up. But he probably will. For WONDER WOMAN.
Call Joel Silver and ask him about it. I'm serious, this is very real. Negotiations are ongoing, but this could break in the trades any day. Guys, I'm giving you the exclusive because I'm such a fan of your site, but in a day or two, I'm going to send the info to other places as well...I'm that psyched about it, and I think that Joss's legions of fans should know how close they are to to gold-braceletted greatness.
So anything else I can do to prove my rightousness, email me back and I'll do it. Do your due diligigence, call Joel Silver, call anyone you want, and get this news out there. Because you guys deserve the exclusive, and the world deserves Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman.
Keep up the great work!

Hmmm, sounds bogus so far... sounds like some rumour running the simplistic theory that because he works on the comic he could work on the movie.. I await a more reliable souce than AIC news... :)

I would rather him return to the Buffyverse than either. That said Wonder Woman needs him more but X3 would be awesome with him.
Someone bump the Buffyverse thread!

That said Wonder Woman needs him more but X3 would be awesome with him.I'd rather see him head X3, but that's mostly because I'm not to anxious to see WW happen. Maybe I'm being too particular, but I just can't imagine who would be able to play the part and do it justice.

I doubt Whedon will pass up X3 for WW. I mean he is a huge X-men fan and I have never heard him even mention himself being a WW fan. Though he can do Strong Woman shows and prolly movies. It's about time he moves past the whole girl power thing. Come on Joss. Buffy is over, no need to recreate another super strong woman.
Imagine if it's true. WB steals away Bryan Singer for Superman and then when they find a replacement for X3 they steal him away for WW. If this is true i doubt X3 will be made.

But you know what? I would rather he focus on his two franchises (Buffyverse and Serenity) and maybe create a couple of new ones rather than jumping aboard projects that are already well established and in capable hands could be done without him.

A while ago, I heard a rumor that Whedon most likely won't be directing X-Men 3. He refuses to approach FOX about the directing spot, and would rather FOX approaches him. And since FOX hasn't come up to him yet, there's a chance they won't at all. But that's just a rumor I heard.

While I think he'd do an awesome job on X3, the way things look he probably won't be doing it. And really don't care about a Wonder Woman movie.

I have to agree that there really isn't anyone, as far as I can tell, that would be right for the role of Wonder Woman. And where would the first film go? Rush through her origins to get her over to Man's World? Do a Golden-Age take on the character and set her back in WWII?
It would be a massive undertaking, and as much as I want to see a Wonder Woman franchise during my lifetime, I don't know why Whedon would skip over the chance to do a film in a major franchise to tackle all these problems.
That, and the article sounded totally fake.

Nah-- considering that the budgets on the first two (especially number one) were relatively thrifty for summer blockbuster action flicks, the X-Men franchise has turned into a decently beefy cash cow. Not in the Spider-Man range, but still very profitable. Fox won't let the franchise fade away until they've milked it dry, which certainly hasn't happened yet and probably won't until it reaches number four or five and churns out the inevitable Batman and Robin-esque stinker.

Seriously. He did the same thing in Astonishing X-Men with the return of Colossus. It was horrible too. I don't see how he could make a dull character any good like that. =/

Fox has screwed him over before and it is probably hard to put himself at their mercy again. In commentaries and interviews Whedon has been nothing but gracious and always heralds the work of his writers and actors. Not liking the guy's work is one thing but to attribute an ego to him seems misplaced.

Okay, my MISTAKE for not knowing enough about the guy to know he's been screwed by FOX so many times. It's just that when somebody says something to that effect, it always just rubs me the wrong way. I just hate it when somebody says that they'd rather wait for somebody to contact them rather than contacting whoever themself. Seems to me that after he's expressed so much interest in the X-Men franchise and hasn't been contacted yet, then there's more than likely little to no hope for him directing.
I also never said I didn't like the guy's work. He's not so bad, but he's just so overrated.

I also never said I didn't like the guy's work. He's not so bad, but he's just so overrated.Probably because of the whole "High School is Hell" metaphor of Buffy. Believe me A LOT of people relate to that. When you create a work that so many people personally identitify with, you're bound to be overpraised.

It just may be how I see things, since everybody has different views on one thing or another. I mean, had I actually known that Whedon was screwed by FOX, the I may not have said anything about an ego.
So yeah, that is probably the reason for the overratedness of Whedon.

X3 would mean more money for less work and it's success is pretty much garunteed if you just keep the same basic "niche" Singer established. Joss should go for it instead of something he'd have to start from scratch and probably end up not bein made (WB has a bad habit of failure to get these movies into production. Catwoman had been in the works since '92, and this WW film has been trying to work for years now.)

This whole WW madness has crossed over to the Buffy actors. It's always been rumors about SMG and CC as Diana so it's no surpise that they resurfaced after the whole Whedon news bit.

Ex-BUFFY stars SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR and CHARISMA CARPENTER are allegedly competing for the lead role in forthcoming superhero movie WONDER WOMAN.
The actresses - who played BUFFY SUMMERS and CORDELIA CHASE in the hit TV series - are battling for the iconic role after their former boss, JOSS WHEDON, agreed to direct the movie remake of the 70s television show, reports British newspaper the DAILY RECORD.
An insider says, "Joss has told the studio that Sarah is his first choice followed by Charisma. Sarah expressed an interest, but the producers are more interested in Charisma because she is less well known."Here's a tidbit from an interview from Wizard Magazine a few months back w/ Sarah Michelle Gellar on the whole WW speculation:
Wizard: A few months back there were reports you were considering a role in a Wonder Woman movie…Is that still an option at all?
SMG: You know, I have no idea where that came form…I’m way too short. [Laughs] Wonder Woman’s like six feet tall!
Wizard: You could do it.
SMG: [Laughs] I don’t know if I could wear that outfit for three months... I’d be a little self-conscious.
Wizard: Would you have worries about being typecast?
SMG: [Laughs] There are worse things than to be typecast than a superhero.

I really can't see either of them portraying Wonder Woman. I mean if they want a campfest then sure get Carpenter however if they are going to do WW any justice they should get an actress with a raw range and really focus on the greek-warrior amazonian history of Princess Diana. I don't want WW to go to Man's World any time soon but this movie is in the hands of the WB so I know they will go in the 70's TV show direction which is ashame because WW should be taken seriously. I don't see SMG playing any other superheroine anytime soon. I think the role of Buffy satisfied her enough in that department. I don't want to see Carpenter in the role. I mean it would just be horried. I'm already scared by the rumors of CC as Lois Lane .
As for the Joss Whedon. I would rather for him to focus on the Firefly universe, the Astonishing X-Men title, and brining a live action Fray into the Buffyverse. I've kinda lost faith in the X-Men movie franchise for now and I really don't want Joss to go anywhere near it. The same goes for the WW franchise. The only way a WW movie would work is with the casting of Kate Beckinsale and following the character's greek myth origins and not just placing her in Man's world w/ the whole campiness and no Drusilla!!!!
BTW, I find the whole Joss Whedon being overrated topic really amusing. I can see why some might say that however I disagree. This year was the year (and only year so far) of Joss Whedon. He actually gotten some recognition for his works. He was never really given major props for his accomplishments on Buffy nor Angel. Sure the shows were recognized by critics, fellow creators, and by it's ever supportive following however I can name actors, episodes (besides Hush), and even writers that should have gotten nominations for Golden Globes or even Emmy awards. Astonishing X-Men really catapulted Joss' post-Buffyverse career. He started getting recognized for relaunching a popular comic book team and bringing fans back into the fold. This was a totally different medium for Joss. He has never written any non-Buffyverse character inside the comic world so this was a big deal and It really helped make Joss more popular among both Buffy based and comic based fans alike. So if being one of the best television and comic book writers makes Whedon overrated it's well deserved and I think he's finally hit his stride and soon the whole world will see it.

- FrayI've heard people compare Joss Whedon to God. So yeah, he is a LITTLE overrated.;) :p
I surprised you aren't looking forward to a possible Buffy spin-off or movie. I totally agree that Whedon should just focus on the two universes he created (there goes that God thing again). Fray is an awesome idea but it would have to be tweaked thanks to Chosen. I really want a Faith and Spike spinoff, a Buffy movie, and a Watcher TV movie.
I'm off to bump the Buffyverse thread and any further info you have of the upcoming adventures of Joss 'n' pals would be appreciated.:)

It's not that I am not looking foward to a Buffy spin-off or movie but I think I can wait. I'm rather satisfied at the moment. BtVS and Angel was like eating a big Thanksgiving meal. Both shows had so many different elements and themes that I just loved and I ate it all up, now I'm full. Currently, I'm loving Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men and pumped up for Serenity. I personally think Buffy and the Scoobies should take a breather then come back refreshed and do a movie or two but it has to be done right. Nothing rushed. Joss should atleast spend a few years writing and perfecting the movie script. I think a Ripper miniseries featuring Andrew as Giles' apprentice fighting off evil things in England would be sweet.

Seriously keep bumping the Buffyverse thread and I'll keep raising different topics.
See ya there!:)
P.S. Andrew as Giles' apprentice? GOLD!
My only concern with a WW movie is that they have to pick the right woman. That's one of my problems with X-men, is that I would've picked someone else than Famke for Jean Grey..
Anyway as long as the actress could look at least similar to WW, and fill out that costume, with a good script I'd be all for it. Casting can always be such a tough process..
I'd rather have Whedon do WW than X-men simply because X-men has been done, so it's not like they'd have to start from scratch, I'd rather have Whedon be able to put his mark on the movie more..
