Not only is it time to screw our diets to the hell with turkey-stuffed mouths, today marks the 16th anniversary of MST3K's first epidsode! Huzzah!
Technically, the series its first episode sometime this month 15 years ago, but when it was a crappy show on a local station 1 year before that, it premiered on Turkey Day, resulting in associating the two,and MST3K would normally have Thanksgiving marathons on Comedy Channel/Comedy Central/Any-Other-Fomer-Name and sometimes on SCIFI.
When Barry Schulman, who supposrted the show, left SCIFI, it was replaced by Bonnie Hammer from USA, who insisted that every show had to not just get consisten ratings, but continue to grow. Sounds like she would do fine at FOX. So no more new episodes where ordered after Season 10.
BUT SCIFI was kind enough to extend the contract for reruns by 2 years. It was pulled when it ran out last January.
So, anyone have any special memories of the show, or planning to watch some taped or VHS/DVD bought ep's after the parade and game? I recently the Essentials DVD with Manos: The Hands Of Fate and Santa Conquerors the Martians! :D

Thanks to MST3K, I can do an impeccable impersonation of Torgo from M:THOF.

I have a ton of MST3K tape, probably even a couple of thanksgiving marathons. But their poorly labeled, I don't know what my chances of finding one are.
I'd probably put one on while I'm screwing around the house this morning if they didn't have an Abbot and Costello marathon on AMC.
Maybe I'll put on on later tonight if I get a chance.
I miss the show.
There are so many bad movies around that are unwatchable without being made fun of.

It doesn't replace MST3K, but this kick-ass site: www.horrorhosts.com will fill the needs of anyone looking for old school-style of hosting movies. THAT, and of course looking forward to MST3K DVD's as presents from relatives :D
Let's see, I got myself the Essentials DVD on sale, but that was last week, so I've seen the movies. I'm thinking of actually popping in my recording of the series finale for some bittersweet comedy.
Oh man, I have more MST3K stuff than I know what to do with. I even caved in and bought the Scrapbook tape, just to see what the KTMA days were like (for those not in the loop, that's the "crappy station" shoujoaifan was referring to) and boy, you'd never know this would have become an institution, would you?
So, in the spirit of thanksgiving and wasting time, I offer the following thanks:
Thanks MST3K:
-For making the word "MITCHELL!" automatically funny. Hell, for making Joe Don Baker automatically funny.
-For teaching me to notice the constant railing kills in movies.
-For giving the world "A Patrick Swayze Christmas" sure to become a holiday standard . . .sometime.
-For teaching us to steer clear of awkward goat-men with weird knees.
-For teaching us that annoying kids in tight white hot pants named Kenny really run the Japanese government.
-For teaching us that not ONLY is Gamera really neat, but FULL of turtle meat.
-Richard Basehart.
-For never bothering to look for Dr. Erhardt.
-For being Frank about Frank.
And finally:
-Waffles.

-For never bothering to look for Dr. Erhardt.Oh gosh! Erhardt. While he was decent as Tom, I just couldn't take him as a Mad.
Frank. TV's Frank.
I think I've made my point.

A-MEN to that. Weinstein could tear it up as Tom Servo (his ability to riff constantly during the KTMA episodes on the fly just boggles my mind) but he was such a dweeby Mad.
Tho I don't think they ever matched the Dr. F./ Frank dymaic with any other pairing they tried. No, I'm not a Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy fan.

What am I thankful for...thanks to MST3K:
11. For teaching us to value springs, for without them, all existence would collapse and demons would complain about it.
12. For showing the world what Gumby REALLY is, a murderer...of robots.
13. For teaching us the ingredients to Indian stew in a catchy line.
14. For showing us how Ol' Saint Nick did NOT conqueror the Martians.
15. For not only creating MSTies, but also creating a SECOND type of fan who obsessively quests to find all the no-longer-produced toys and Tupperware to make their own robot puppets...(Or go online and buy some/get replicas.)
16. For Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, Gypsy, Cambot, the Nanites, and Joel and Mike (or Mike and Joel. Or whatever.)
17. For Dr. Clayton Forester, Dr. Laurence Erhardt, Jerry and Sylvia The Mole People, The Lawgiver Pearl Forester, Professor Bobo, and Brain Guy the Observer.
But, perhaps most important of all, is #18...

Tho I don't think they ever matched the Dr. F./ Frank dymaic with any other pairing they tried.True. And on the Dr F/Frank relationship, I think that the scene (yes, the singing scene) from Pod People was MADE to be ripped in their host segment. Good heavens.
No, I'm not a Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy fan.Being a Joel girl, I remember tears escaping my eyes when I read in my news letter that he was leaving the show. (As ridiculous as it is, I am being completely honest with you.) And the turn-over of Mads was like trying to put a forward going car into reverse... it was painful. It's only been just recently, on watching my tape collection (this time, in backwards order) that I've been able to find any semblence of appreciation for Pearl, Bobo & Brain Guy. There definately isn't the dynamic you so rightly label, but they have their moments.
12. For showing the world what Gumby REALLY is, a murderer...of robots. That short and the following host segment was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Now that was classic television and I miss the show horribly! But, I am receiving the DVDs of their best episodes in the mail. I, somehow, always manage to catch something I missed in the past. And the thing I'll always remember -- as an earlier poster already noted........
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDD!!!!!!!
Or, better yet....
SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPP!!!!!!

MST3k, I thank you because:
-You cheer me up and make me laugh
-You were educational on a sharply twisted angle
-You gave us Tom and Servo
-You gave me phrases and words to use in my everyday vocab
-You exist
-You encouraged me to move on and riff to my heart's content on anything and everything, thereby keeping your spirit alive

23. For giving Reb Brown a reason to exist. (Brad Beefgut!)
24. For putting Chesterfield shirts back in style
25. Two words: Space Chief
26. Krankor
27. Every time I land at an airport I think "Damn, it's crunchy!"
28. Now every time I look at a box of Kodak film I wanna say "The Eastman, who came out the east to do battle with the AMAZING RONDO!"

Wow, I didn't even realize that Thanksgiving was the anniversary of one of my favorite programs of all time, MST3K! Coincidentally enough, my family and I watched 'Gunslinger' off of Volume Six that afternoon just before dinner. I was on the floor after that "Cue the horses!" line :D .
One more "Thankful" I can't beleieve no one else did before me. *L*
I'm thankful that MST3K taught me that man is a feeling creature, and beause of it, the greatest in the universe.
. . .oh, and the "Forklift Song" :)

I'm still buying DVDs of the shows I haven't already gotten on VHS from Rhino. I just wish they'd come out faster.
I always think of ol' Joel and the 'Bots whenever I see someone named Mitchell.
People on my floor at college are getting very tired of the Tubular Boobular song, which I've somehow memorized. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
I'm always making sure to watch out for snakes.
MST3K is the best show SCI-FI or CC ever had. Too bad they didn't realize it.
Two shameless (http://pcomics.topcities.com/eviljim/week32.html#3) plugs (http://members.aol.com/tjats/tjats.html).
Now I must go to SLEEEEEEEEEEEP!
[EDIT: shoujoaifan, how about "I'M HUGE!"]

The ONE most iconic thing besides the bots and the SOL we all missed before:
"HI-KEEBA!"
Oh, and I thought you were Dale...
