"Life isn't just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than DNA. Through speech, music, literature and moves.... what we've seen, heard, felt ...anger, joy and sorrow... these are the things I will pass on. That's what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to an end some time, new species may rule over this planet. Earth may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can. Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing." - Solid Snake

An excellent game with a nice involving story. The thing most people had a problem with was the story and that "Raiden" was the main character throughout most of the game. I personally didn't mind playing him.

Somewhat mixed emotions this game gives me. On one hand, I can understand the backlash against Raiden. On the other hand, it feals like people never played the Snake Tales on Substance. Anyway, it's a great game and I don't think it's severely overrated.

I didn't enjoy this game for a number of reasons. The main reason for my dislike of MGS2 is the poor quality of the characters. I'm not referring solely to Raiden (though I didn't think he was a good character), it extends to nearly every character featured in the game. Fat Man, Vamp, Fortune, the Ocelot/Liquid hybrid...all incredibly lame. Raiden and Rose are annoying and uninteresting. I'm not really interested in hearing them go through couples therapy in the middle of the mission. And finally, I feel that there were signigicant changes made to returning characters Snake and Otacon. I was pretty invested in these characters after MGS, and I don't think the changes they made to them were for the better.

There are other complaints I had concerning the gameplay, the setting, and the convoluted storyline, but the characters are what really ruined it for me. I just didn't really care what happened, which is the polar opposite reaction to what I felt while playing the first MGS.

At least MGS3 explains some things...

Ocelot being possessed by Liquid (his father was a ghosty guy who could possess souls)

The Patriots' start-up

Where Raiden got his name from (Solidus named "Jack" after Big Boss we can assume.)

Of course all the outrage came from Hideo Kojima's lies. He put fake footage of Snake in the Plant chapter in all the trailers and barely showed Raiden. Document of MGS2 had over 40 trailers, 38 of which feature Snake as the game's star.
