Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is projected to hit the $100 million mark today, on its fifth day in release, which would tie 20th Century Fox's "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" record as the fastest century mark in boxoffice history.

The Hollywood Reporter says that early boxoffice projections Sunday morning made the possibility of "Harry Potter" hitting the $100 million mark Monday look feasible, which would have put the film at that level in four days, beating "The Phantom Menace" and thus becoming the fastest in history to do so. But the final grosses for Sunday turned out to be slightly
lower than projected.

The actual weekend gross for Harry was $90,294,621.

That's still a heck of a lot of money. I hope it at least ties it.

I hope Harry Potter beats Phantom Menace! It was so much better than the computer generated crap that was Phantom Menace! It had no annoying characters in it either( Jar jar, anyone?)

Yeah, it would be pretty awesome if it beats Stars Wars, but even tying with the extremely anticipated Episode 1 is pretty impressive. Wow, Harry Potter has almost paid off the cost to make the movie, especially with all the money Coke paid for to use the name in the promotion its using...

Actually, I read someplace that the marketing deals actually DID pay off the costs of making and releasing the movie, and basically every dollar at the box office is profit to Warner Bros.

The only on-line story I found was from bbc.com, dated Feb 21:

Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft drink group, has won the global marketing rights for the first Harry Potter film, at a reported cost of £103m.

That's $150 million American.

 :D

Coca-Cola isn't a licensee, per se. Not only does their deal not include the normal option of using the characters on packaging or advertising, but there are no new Coke products with a HP theme. (And here I'd jump at tasting Unicorn Blood Soda :p ) Coke's really just another advertising outlet.

But it's the output of products from Lego and Mattel that make them traditional licensees. Lego has a bunch of playsets that are readily available. And Mattel? Mattel has a bunch of product, most notably the action figure line. 3 different Harrys sculpts/repaints- one of which is packed 1 per box, Ron, Hermione, 2 Malfoys- 1 listed as "limited" on the card, a pregnant-looking Snape, the Headmaster (another limited figure ), the Defense Teacher (yet another limited figure ) and one that's not even listed on the stupid packaging.
