View Full Version : These Doctors are Literally Trying to Kill Me
I have this medical exam tomorrow morning and I don't have to eat for one day. I haven't eaten a thing for the past 8 hours and it's driving me CRAZY!
I understand the exam won't work if I eat, but it's really painful having to wait this long. Have you guys ever gone through this kind of experience?

Oh yeah, any time I get bloodwork done. It does suck, but I usually treat myself to something sweet and fatty immediatly after I leave the doctor's office.

Ah so you're my 10 o'clock tomorrow
The thing is we just don't like the chyme splatter when we cut you open
don't worry though the gas should knock you out and you won't feel a thing
especialy when we remove your brain
but don't worry it's for a good cause
we have a brain ball game scedualed with the ambulance corp.
then we sew you back up and you don't remember a thing

Yeah I suppose. I regularly don't eat breakfast on weekdays, literally. And on Friday I don't eat jack until midnight. On the fifth days I just sleep majority of the time and hope I atleast wake up around eleven. Then I can just work out to divert my attension.
Awww, you have my sympathies Jave, if you're used to eating on a regular basis it can get really hard to ignore the frantic signals your body is issuing when its not getting what its used to. Its easy for me to say to say 'try and take your mind off it' I know, but i do know what its like too as I've had to do fasts before.
Just try to focus on how much more than usual you'll enjoy filling up when its over. Hope it all goes well for you *hugs*

I've done the Forty Hour Famine the last couple of years. Eight hours is NOTHING. I hope that makes you feel better. :P

One of my biggest peeves is when people say "literally" when hey don't mean it, or even when they mean the exact opposite.
If you don't eat for eight hours (or even 24), you LITERALLY won't die. Also, unless the doctors are shooting at you or violently stabbing you with knives, they are not literally trying to kill you.
I think Javeman's just expressing a little hungry frustration here Space Kitty, that's all ;)

My dad couldn't eat anything solid before his colonoscopy and his hernia surgery. Don't worry, just treat urself afterward.

I would sympathize with you if I didn't have to fast for an entire month.;) I ate barely anything and lost some weight. Also, I never eat breakfast.
Wow, that would stink if I had to fast for a month.

I have to eat breakfast otherwise I get really dizzy. Also if I wake-up too quickly (you know jump out of bed and rush) I get super dizzy for the rest of the day.
I rarely eat lunch, though. And I've never had to fast, but it sounds like it sucks. And anything Yoko Ono does, I don't, it's a rule of mine. ;)
Had my exam a while ago. Worst 20 hours of my life.

20 HOURS?! Sheesh, what kind of exam was this?
Oh, and how can you people not eat breakfast? It's the most important meal of the day! :) Even if you're not hungry or are in a hurry, eat a bar, snarp a Pop-Tart, drink a glass of juice... SOMETHING!
20 HOURS?! Sheesh, what kind of exam was this?I meant 20 hours of not eating. The actual exam was only 20 minutes.

8 hours is reall nothing though, try going for a week only on water )_), still I gotta eat breakfast...I can go without it easly, but that is one of the reasons you get fat. You're body dosen't have enough energy to keep itself going and you get slugish during the day.

I CANNOT go hungry longer than a day, because I start to feel weak, sick, and dizzy. Not pleasant, I assure you.

Yeah. My mom wants be to have some bloodwork done on me and I know I can't go through a lot of hours of not eating. I might not even fast for religious purposes because I know I can't really survive. :(

That's funny because I'd always heard the reason for fasting in a religious context was to increase one's sense of dependence on [insert deity here] or as a show of faith. Kind of like abstaining from sex, this form of abstinence for some period of time demonstrates the person's commitment to [deity] through their rejection of the temptation of food. You're supposed to ask [deity] for the strength to overcome the weakness of your body.
At least this was the rationale given to me by my Muslim carpool buddy in elementary school when I asked her how she went through Ramadan.
Not eating for a 24 hour period will not kill you. It's a normal procedure, especially if you need baseline bloodwork done. Otherwise all the nutrients (or lipids) end up clogging your blood, making measurements done by hemocrit less reliable. Have you ever seen blood drawn after a large influx of glucose or fatty foods? It's milky red and a thicker consistency than normal.
What kind of exam was that?? When I have blood-exams they ask me to only skip breakfast (around 12-14 hours without eating if you keep in mind that dinner in my house is at 7 or 8 P.M.) but never that much.
But you know what's worse than not eating... NOT SLEEPING! When I was little I had some muscular problems and I visited a Neurologist (sp?) and he wanted to make me an EEG, so he asked me to not sleep in 36 hours to make my brain waves go to some level. It was horrible! Not only because I was little and needed my sleep hours, but because it was so boring! (my family slept the entire night, except for my mom who checked me once in a while and I had to be up all that time in silence).
But even that wasn't the worst exam I've ever experienced... I'm not sure of the name in English, but it's one when they stick lot's of needles in your face and body and pass electric impulses through them to make your muscles spam. They keep increasing the intensity and the frequency of the impulses to take note of your muscular reaction and I swear that the last one made me jump from the bed. Evil doctors, they even said that this exam makes adults faint, and I was only 11 ¬¬... but I guess it was for the better in the end.
