What does a Canadian station care? I mean, Witch Hunter Robin was a colossal failure here but YTV says it's doing great.

Well, SPACE is interested in the show, but they're a little different from YTV. They tried airing anime a few years back, but it completely flopped because they tried too hard to market towards a niche audience (ie: the kind that normally doesn't watch anime on TV). They've been spewing out a lot of BS reasons for not trying to get anime over the past few years, a few of the producers say they want to get SAC on the air. If the execs can see that the show is commercially viable with a mainstream audience, not to mention take notice of all the hype surrounding the franchise recently, there'll be a higher chance of them picking it up.

Ghost in the Shell did great with teens, according to the ratings at Media Life Magazine, so:
The boring, pretentious show does good with 12-17.
The fun, quality show does good with 18-34.

How is 554,000 for a premiere of a bran new series in any way a flop? That's damn good. Better than Wolf's Rain, Bebop, Trigun and any other anime series on Saturday that's not Inuyasha EVER did.
EDIT - I stand corrected. Inuyasha's highest rated performance on AS was 547,000. So now FMA hold's the #3 all time highest anime telecast in Adult Swim history.
#1 - FLCL: "Fire Starter"- 585,000
#2 - Big O: "The Greatest Villain" - 575,000
#3 - FMA: "To Challenge the Sun" - 554,000
#4 - Inuyasha: "Totosai's Rigid Training" - 549,000

Wow! That's a solid win for Saturday over Sunday this week and as already mentioned, very impressive numbers for FMA (not to mention VB). Considering all those numbers, it's no real surprise GitS didn't make the top 3. Even assuming it also did well, it is inevitably more likely that the three shows earlier in the line-up will make the top three than the three latter shows. Not that the Top 3 really matters, it's the actual ratings that are important.
Shnay
11-15-2004, 01:11 AM
I can't believe GitS wasn't even on there. :(With just a top three list, we really don't know if it did well or not. It's probably a pretty safe asssumption that the GitS ratings were just below the FMA ratings, which would still rate as an excellent premier. When there are four popular shows on, not making it to the top three doesn't mean a show flopped.
Woo for FMA and Woo for Venture Brothers. Great numbers, i'm glad people are watching those shows. I figured just as much, glad to see that GITS is doing well, but of course that must've meant Wolf's rain did pretty bad.
And on Sunday's.. eh. typical. I was also one of the viewers who wasted their half hour on Perfect hair forever. =[
Rabi, how can you call it a flop? .. 2 episodes does not a series make. It doesn't even start to hit it's feeling for the rest of the series till like episode 5 IMO.

Ha, I don't believe thats whats got him confused. He's confused because he thought GITS did better than FMA, because of what a certain news site reported. I just hope that the first eppy was enough to get people hooked to watch this week's eppy and raise numbers even more.

FMA lost to VB by a mere few thousand. And even while it may have lost to a VB rerun, FMA still had the highest rating of any anime series on Adult Swim ever. That sounds like the opposite of a bad omen to me. One show on the block doing better than another show on the block doesn't really matter. what matters is the actual ratings each show gets. If FMA had 200,000 and VB had 100,000 it would have beaten VB and doubled its ratings, but the ratings would still be crap. Assuming GitS isn't far behind FMA, the latest Adult Swim Saturday schedule is in extremely good shape and the prospects for anime just got a lot better.

11-15-2004, 01:29 AM
That doesn't make any sense at all
2 Shows that the general public have never heard of before perform worse than a show that is finally starting to pick up steam and recognition? It's not FMA did much worse than Venture brothers. It's impossible to make any assumptions based on first week numbers alone anyway. Wait until this week and see how many people liked what they saw and came back.
Pepperidge

Ahh. Well, I guess we should also keep in mind that Venture Brothers had garbage to questionable ratings for a good portion of its first run, anyway.

If the latter I thougt GITS beat FMA for ep 1 of each.
I also have to agree how could reruns beet first runs?
William C. Maune
11-15-2004, 02:16 AM
These ratings are from the episodes of FMA, etc. that aired on November 6th.
As for reruns, Futurama and Family Guy are the most rerun shows on Adult Swim, yet the ratings for those two shows routinely beat everything else.

#3 - FMA: "To Challenge the Sun" - 554,000
#4 - Inuyasha: "Totosai's Rigid Training" - 549,000First, FMA pulled in the best numbers on Adult Swim since April of this year :D.
Theses are the Anime shows that broke 500K since April (just did this up for the AS thread on ratings):
Fullmetal 554K (Nov 6th)
InuYasha 547K (Oct 9th)
InuYasha 532K (July 24th)
InuYasha 503K (Aug 21st).
Second, the FLCL and Big O episodes must have been before April 2004. When exactly did those air and do you have or know of a website that has the pre-2004 ratings?
One reason I would like to know when those two shows got those ratings is that cable ratings are hard to compare across years. The reason for this is that as a cable channel households (the number of house holds a cable channel is received in) go up, the ratings numbers go down. So it is likely that FMA actually did better in 2004 numbers than FLCL and Big O did when they got there numbers because the number of households getting Cartoon Network has increased since 2003 (or even 2002).
Anyway, I just read over in the "Ask The FUNI Rep" thread that FUNI will be putting out a press release on the ratings, so I'm looking forward to seeing that :).

If you're going to rag on a show, at least watch it first. I don't even know what it's like, for Pete's sake.
Like everyone else, I'm surprised FMA beat GitS, as I figured name reconigtion would put GitS ahead, at least for a little while. But considering the ratings, it's likely people decided to watch Venture and then stuck around for FMA.
