Lately at school I've talked a few times about games on the SNES. During the course of the conversation I say Super NES (Pronounced like the character in Earthbound). As soon as I do everyone says that it's prononuced S N E S saying the letters like es en ee es. I remember an old Nintendo power in which someone asked in a letter how it's really pronounced and they said it was pronounced like I say it 'Super NES'. How do you all pronounce it and does anyone know of another source to prove my point? Also did anyone else read this letter?

There seemed to be a range: either Snesssss or Snezzzzzz; Super NES like you say; I have never heard it spelt out when talking about it. I and everybody I knew with one just called it what it was: Super Nintendo. No abbreviations, not a mouthful either.

The way I see it, there's only a few appropriate ways of saying it.

"Super Nintendo Entertainment System"
If you want to be super-descriptive and sound like an official super-fan...

"Super Nintendo"
Probably the most common pronunciation.

"Super N.E.S."
Shortened it, more of a reference to the fact it was sorta the sequel to the N.E.S.

"S.N.E.S."
Everyone knows what you're talking about, just like N.E.S., N.64, P.S.one (though people tend to call that the "P.S.X." for ignorant reasons), and... DS?

On the other hand, what sounds just weird?

SNES and Super NES. Just because you're using the initials dosen't mean they can be coherently put together in a word... I don't think I've ever actually heard it pronounced that way...

Usually "Super Enn-Ee-Ess" for me, or "Ess Enn Ee Ess". Or just "Super Nintendo".

I mostly call it Super Nintendo or Super NES.. Sometimes SNES, but I usually only say it that way when I'm comparing it to other consoles, like the NES, etc.

S-N-E-S is the term that I usually use and what I usually hear others use, I get very annoyed when I hear it pronounced 'snes'. Super Nintendo is also acceptable.

Some people just call it the Super.

I always called it the "Ess-En-EEE-ESS". No idea where this new "SNES" craze came from.

SNES and Super NES. Just because you're using the initials dosen't mean they can be coherently put together in a word... I don't think I've ever actually heard it pronounced that way... Adam Sessler of X-Play says it like that. It drives me nuts. He sounds like he's sneezing. :p

I usually just say Super N-E-S, because it rolls off the tongue. Super Nintendo takes too long to say, and S-N-E-S can confuse some people.

P.S.one (though people tend to call that the "P.S.X." for ignorant reasons)

So I'm ignorant? I seem to remember "PSX" being the official abbreviation and used in Magazines and on websites.

For pete's sake, IGN's website is http://PSX.ign.com, not http://PSONE.ign.com.

I always pronounced it Super NES (as in Super En-Ee-Es) but what really bothers me is when people call it the snes (pronounced Sness) *quivers*

I think I call it S-N-E-S most of the time but...who really cares? I don't think there's really a right or wrong pronunciation.

I'd suggest giving anyone who questions you calling it Super NES a good karate chop to the throat.

NachoHat wins the thread. Aren't there more important things to feel bothered about than the pronunciation of the name of a defunct game system from the 90's? That's like getting peeved because someone who just moved next to you from a different part of the country calls his carbonated beverages "pop" instead of "coke" or "soda" or whatever you are accustomed to calling it.

I generally pronounce it as a word, snes. I've been known to say it every other way mentioned, tho, but generally the other way would be Super NES.

I usually just call it the "Super Nintendo". Very rarely would I ever call it anything else, but if I would, it'd probably be, "Super NES".
