They depowered him a little bit in order to make him different from Superman. Good call--until his appearances in the new JLA comic series that's what he pretty much was.

I think his super strength and psychic power may be connected. Look at when he phased through Batman and the laser hit him. He put up a psychic field, and it only stunned him...
