Was it me, or was GL Powered down? Several hours before the show, I was on a tv guide type site that had descriptions of every character. Every single description made complete and absolute sence except for Green Lantern's. His abilities were described as " able to fire laser like beams, and create force fields from his special ring." At first I laughed this off believing it to be illiteracy with the character...But upon reviewing the premiere, THAT IS REALLY ALL HE DID. Now, I understand that with a team like setting etc. etc. sure he'd have to be somewhat powered down, but excuse me if I miss the point here, but green lantern is not just a guy with laser beams and force fields, that guys name is Booster Gold. Green Lantern is a charished character meant to inspire the imagination. I suppose there is time to either explain or show why perhaps, but I truly believe in Timm's work, and know there's a reson for this. I knew he hit it dead on with the "eye design" of John (You can still see green on green pupils, kinda spiffy :D ) but I really hope to see a boxing glove, a wrench, or just ANY construct other than a force field (which wasn't strong enough to hold gas out..... ) Either way, this should be explained alittle, and with any luck we'll get a glimpse of this on Monday's episode "In Blackest Night."

Well, John Stewart is a very military-minded guy. He doesn't have the creativity of the other Green Lanterns, so if he does get more creative, I'd be surprised. He's very direct and to-the-point, and feels no need whatsoever to do something simple in a very complex way.

I remember reading how they had planned a scene in an upcoming episode in which GL uses the ring to make a hand to slap the Flash with. So GL's powers aren't limited, we just don't see him do anything too fancy in the pilot.

I agree with kid_flash's view. I got the same feeling from GL. He's very direct and to the point. Why create a "shimmering sword of green energy" to slice through a walker's legs when he can direct a bolt of the energy itself to do the exact same task.

Wasn't the gas yellow?? GL's weakness. Well every GL's except Kyle and Alan.

Ok, me again, the original poster. Alright, I buy the military thing as an excuse, not an answer. For sucha military minded guy, the guy would be thinking of different tactical standards, not only laser beams and what not. To answer the last post, why do a sword rather than a laser beam that could do the same thing faster....I call the bluff there. I dunno if you noticed or not, but it took Jon quite some time to open that door, or even unstick flash..No offence, but any military type guy would've thought of something other than a ray of light, provided he's got a will greater than a 12 year old with an empty house. The whole yellow difficiency thing, I don't by it either. Timm and Dini made it very distinct that the animated GL didn't have that problem, I.e. Sinestro and Kyles battle, THEY WERE EQUAL, not one stronger etc. Which to be honest, I like better as a whole. To even make things alittle more technical, Hal never existed in the Animated world...Neither did Alan, or Guy, or G'Nort (thank heavens) But Alan may just be written in for this whole JSA Not JSA team up thing. Alright, last comment before I take off, I've read and now understand alittle more bout Jon, my closing thought is this quote "He's filling in for our lantern, who's missing for a reason" taken from an article description by the creators on a tv uide like site
Take Care, thanks for the posts---J

Is this GL temporary? I thought Timm always wanted to do the John Stewart version. Where did you hear he was filling in until another GL comes about?

I don't think that John Stewart has the weakness to yellow in this version. Kyle didn't. I just assumed that the gas got through moments before he could throw up a shield.
As for John's legitamacy, he is the Green Lantern for this series. As to what happened to Kyle...we don't know. Hopefully it will be addressed in a future episode.

I really think the John Stewart GL will be a good character. He's also like an anti-Kyle Rayner version of GL. Where Kyle had a wide ranging imagination, Stewart has the military and tactical sense that Rayner didn't. I really think the JL needs a guy like Stewart. He brings the know-how to take immediate charge of a battlefield situation with sound tactics and practices. It alsways seems to me that the JL was lacking that. Stewart, like Batman, uses tactics to make best use of what the situation has given them. Unlike Bats, GL has the ability to use his ring, both offensively and defensively in a battlefield situation to turn the tide of the battle. He can take immediate action, whereas Batman covers not only the battle at hand, but the events leading up to it and the consequences thereof.
I think we'll see much more from this GL as the series progresses. I would say he's closer to Sinestro (without the bad-guy part) in the way he uses the ring than Rayner.

I think the John Stewart GL is an excellent addition. Can't wait to see tonight's episode. Anyone know the address for that TV guide type site that the original poster was talking about?

Actually, it's not a question of "speed" it's a question of ability. Apparently, the material he was cutting was resistant to his power. So, despite his "choice of weapons" it would have taken him the same amount of time to get through. No amount of imagination would have done it for him any quicker. If that were in fact the case, why not just create a nuclear bomb to blow up the walkers?

I think that quite simply, they are apporaching as the Green Lanterns light
Its a light thats powered by not only his will but his intense concentration. The latter being something that can be broken if say suddenly he noticed something coming at him from anothe angle that he didnt expect, hence why the force feild failed.
The focusing of the light is dependant on this and he can make this light do things he wants, but its still acts like light rather than a something to construct objects with. The ring almost acts like a tangible form of telekinsis and a ultimate cutting torch.
I prefer to think of GL in this almost as something along the lines of a jedi with the Green Lanterns light being like the Force with a offensive option.
I think its sensible because if you have a guy who can will his ring to construct any and everything thing then what would he need a team for? I mean that approachs beyond Pre-Crisis level Superman yet for some reason GL gets now where near the flack that Pre-Crisis Supes does.
and I like Kyle, but John Stewart is character full of untapped potential and the virtue of a black Green Lantern can't be denied. This isn't gratuitous ethnicizing. Its not like turning Nick Fury black or making Clark Kent chinese.
At last a black gets to be a cool hero with a cool power and one of *the* big names, standing equally among the other icons
