Videotape question

I was wondering, about how many times can you record over a video before the tape dies? Are there any warning signals that show up beforehand? Thanks.

Fat white static stripes show up onscreen, sounds become warped, VCR rejects playing the tape...

ive never really noticed a difference from recording to recording.

As for speed, i have tapes in my house at LP and EP taped in 1986, and they outperform every SP tape made on that same machine.
