Well, The studio estimates are in and Harry Potter dominanted the weekend, and in the process setting a weekend record. Monsters Inc and Shallow Hal faired good against the competition.
1. Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone - $93,515,000 ($93.5 mill)
2. Monsters, Inc. - $23,000,000 ($156.7 mill)
3. Shallow Hal - $12,700,000 ($41.3 mill)
4. Domestic Disturbance - $5,600,000 ($33.9 mill)
5. Heist - $4,670,000 ($15 mill)
6. The One - $4,200,000 ($38.4 mill)
7. K-Pax - $3,300,000 ($45.54 mill)
8. The Wash - $3,000,000 ($3.9 mill)
9. Life As A House - $2,725,000 ($9.1 mill)
10. Thirteen Ghosts - $2,190,000 ($37.7 mill)
The opening gross of Harry Potter was more than the rest of the top ten combined! I'm predicting next week it'll fall by 45%, but it will have a great run as there is no real 'family movie' competition for quite sometime. It's expected to hit $100 million by early Monday, making it the fastest movie to hit the century mark.

*whistles in awe* That beat JP2 by $20 million didnt it? That's impressive. I wonder if LOTR will give HP a run for its money.

Wow. I knew it was gonna make a lot of money, but not that much money. Wow. I wonder at the rate its going, how much money it'll make overall.
I think LOTR is gonna do good, but I don't think it will beat Harry Potter. Not quite as many families are going to go see that one, I don't think. I may be wrong though. :)

Plus, Potter had the PG rating, while LOTR has the PG-13 rating. That may give Potter the overall edge.

Wow! I thought it would top off at $80 mill, myself.
Glad to see that Monsters, Inc. is still doing pretty dang well in face of the huge competition.

I think MOSNTERS INC will hold on easily. It is a great laternative when you can't see that wizard movie.

Yeah, now that I think about, the PG-13 thing will probably have a big affect on LOTR. Some parents are pretty strict about movies...

And let's not forget that LOTR will be a longer movie. That means less showing per day and I'm pretty sure it won't be playing in as many screens as Potter is doing at the moment.

How long is LOTR supposed to be?
Did New Line ever fix their tiff with Regal Cinemas?

How long is LotR going to be? Harry Potter was 2.5 hours, so it was pretty long itself...

Don't mind me for butting in, but a good chunk of that gross is coming from the fact that HP is airing on one out of four screens this weekend. It took a LOT of space from its competition. I wonder, though... after Thanksgiving, how well will HP do when many theaters start showing it on only one screen?

So far the movie is clocking in at 2 hours and 52 minutes WITHOUT credits. New Line is 100% behind Peter Jackson and they know what the fan base is and what the popularity is and they're not about to screw with this. Between now and December 19th there might be more cuts to the film to shorten it up, but that has been the reported running time according to the director.
Did New Line ever fix their tiff with Regal Cinemas?
My twin sister friends who are assistant manager's at two different Regals told me Friday when I asked them, that so far Regal IS getting LOTR. The same reason that kept Rush Hour 2 from Regal this summer is what was/is keeping LOTR from being in Regal. So so far they are hearing YES. In September when I asked them, they told me that Regal and New Line hadn't come to an agreement yet, but it looks like now at least they have. I see my friends at least once a week and they promised to e-mail me if they hear other wise.

Not to nitpick, DG, but the Monsters Inc. total is the same as the weekend profit.
Yeah, Harry Potter has some advantages over LOTR. I think that LOTR's only advantage is that it has more uber-geeks rooting for it.

The number in parentheses is actually the cumulative gross (how much it has made to date).
Good eye! I went back and corrected it for DG.

Hey - thanx for fixing that, Max! I don't know how I overlooked it. It is expected that the movie will reach $100 million by this afternoon! How crazy is that? Geeze!

Hmm. Variety has the clever but atypcially lackluster: "B.O. Goes Whole Hogwarts."
Personally, DG, I think this is your chance to out-Variety Variety with a thread title: "Boy Wiz Duz Wiz Biz."
OK, I'll admit I got that by tweaking an old Fractured Fairy Tale. But that only shows it has genuine pedigree. :D

So, does anyone know if it's hit a $100 million yet? If it does that by today it will break the previous record SW Episode 1 made, right?
