Didn't this exact same study get brought up a few months ago? I specifically remember reading the same paragraph, freaky misspelled words and all.

Yes it did (though I wasn't able to find the thread with a search). And when it did come up before, someone pointed out this article at Snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com/language/apocryph/cambridge.asp ).

Howdy,
I'm still going to be disappointed when ostensibly native speakers of English fail to spell words correctly and use proper grammar in their internet posts.
:D

The thing is, though, that even though the first and last letters are the same, those are not misspelled words, they're anagrams. All the letters are correct, the order is just wrong. The letters in "Uinervtisy" can be rearranged to correctly spell "University."
When people misspell words they nearly always get letters completely wrong rather than simply rearrange the correct letters. If it was genuinely spelled wrong with only the first and last letters correct it could be indecipherable, i.e. "uhnbersty," and even then I put in a lot of correct ones and made the pronunciation vaguely similar. With shorter words it can be almost impossible. Tell me what I mean to say when I misspell these words with the first and last letters correct: "yoll," "speen," "cald." There's no way you can figure those out. However, those are exactly the sort of mistakes someone having trouble with English is prone to make.
So the fact that this works, while it does show how adept our brains are at rearranging letters into words we already know, doesn't really say anything about how important spelling is, especially for someone still learning the language. In fact, if you hadn't learned how to spell correctly in English before reading those anagrams you'd have no clue what they were trying to say.

That's cool! Typos bug me, though. It's all my dad's fault, he hates typos too, and so I just grew up with the same peeve.

This is so incredibly old to me. I first heard of it like a year ago.So the minute you heard about it, why didn't you post it here? Huh? HUH? HUH?
Angel posted here; Angel shared the wealth. You just like to hog cool stuff like this to yourself. Well, Mister Man, your monopoly on cool has ended; your little rearrange-the-letters-in-the-middle-and-you-can-still-read-it secret is out. The information has leaked to the masses. We've assimilated it and will now integrate it into our daily lives, and there's nothing you CAN DO ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!1
Hmm...boy, looking back, my post seems kind of pointless and just a little bit mean. Wouldn't you agree? ;)

Yes quite pointless. Amusing though. ;)
