I was over at the Comicboards Spider-Man forum and they have the January Marvel soliciation text up. I was very surprised to see this:

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #1 (of 5)
Written by DAN SLOTT
Penciled by TY TEMPLETON
Cover by PAUL SMITH
Hang tight, True Believer! It's five ALL NEW old school adventures featuring your favorite web-headed hero and his pal, the walking matchstick! Follow them through the years – from high school to present day, from the Negative Zone to the Coffee Bean, from Dorrie Evans to Mary Jane Watson-Parker. It's all here! And first off, see what happens when young Johnny Storm wants some of Spidey's front page exposure... And hires Peter Parker to be HIS personal photographer! This one has doom written all over it – DOCTOR DOOM that is!
32 PGS./MARVEL PSR …$2.99

Now it's great to see the two of the guys who made Batman Adventures so great back and working on a comic that really has promise. I can't wait to read this!

I'm not a Marvel kinda guy...but I wish them and their new book all the best. No doubt it'll be great.

You should give it a shot, DB. It'll have their trademark style, and that's really all that's important.

Anyhow, this sounds like gobs of fun. Ty alluded to a Spidey/Torch-centric project here on the DCAU forum a while ago, so it's nice to see it's coming out so quickly. Old-school Marvel superheroics from the master of old-school Marvel superheroics, Dan Slott himself. I gotta tell ya, She-Hulk is a gas and a half, and I expect this will be, too.

Howdy,

I'm taking the liberty of mirroring this thread on the Comic Book Culture Forum, since it arguably belongs in both places. Ah, technology, making our lives easier.

Insert my usual spiel about how this is a rumor so far, and the official Marvel solicitations for January won't be out until Friday (I think). However, the Marvel solicitations have been leaking a week early for a while now, and I've never seen any of them changing between the leak and the official.

This is another one of those projects that I wouldn't have given a thought to until I saw the creative team, at which point it went straight onto the "gotta get this" list. I agree with randomguy's comments, and add that Dan & Ty have a real talent for taking icons in existence for 40+ years and creating new stories for them that can satisfy both fans unfamiliar with the property and the rabid hardcore fanbase. They did this in Batman Adventures, Ty did it in Human Defense Corps, and Dan did it in Arkham Asylum Living Hell and does it in She-Hulk. They do a great balancing act between writing terrific stories that require little or no prior knowledge to enjoy, and including great "in-jokes" for those in the know.

Plus, Dan & Ty can bring the Funny. It's always a good thing to get a team that can bring the Funny when you're doing a comedic book.

So, with their track record, I don't think you're going to have to know anything other than the origin stories to enjoy Spidey/Torch. Give it a try if you're hesitant, but liked their work on Batman Adventures, in the spirit of bipartisanship if nothing else. Besides, Ty's got a family to feed :).

Depends, if my comic book store carries it, I might get it.

Depends, if my comic book store carries it, I might get it. :shrug:You know you can ask your store to get a copy for you? It drives me crazy when people say they'll get something if their store carries it when most stores will get it for you if you ask. If you jsut ask you're not stuck to the stores whims and decisions on what to and not to buy.

Slott's writing in She-Hulk is some of the best work in any comic period, so I'll be ceratin to pick this up. I hope next week's Marvel Previews has a preview page or 2 of it.

this is definatly going on my pull list...With as many refs as he does, I kinda wish I could get my name mentioned in either book. I know you visit the boards Danny. PM me and I'll approve any use of it whatsoever.

Oh yeah. Fight between you and Robert Kirkman, who would win and who would spout off the most references before he is defeated?

Damn, now I got myself worked up for a Kirkman/Slott book. THat would be the craziest thing ever. Let Ottely do the art and it would be Marvel's book of the decade!

My store doesn't do that anymore! :( They used to special order comics if you were a regular customer about 4-5 years ago. Then they stopped. I can always go to another comic book store.

I'm definitely getting this. I'm not the biggest Marvel fan around (I've read the big stuff and I do read Punisher pretty consistently) but Dan Slott and Ty Templeton working on the book is enough to put it on my pull list.

I'd love it if they threw in a little Batman Adventures reference...

The cover art is up and it looks like just a fun, old-school Marvel series!

Usually for mini-series I would wait for the collection but this is begging to be picked up monthly. I wonder if Mr. Templeton and Mr. Slott will toss in some nods to the fans here at World's Finest and Toon Zone.

There's a five issue preview of the mini-series now online. I am just blown away by Ty Templeton's art here. Wow!

Howdy,

Call me crazy, but that five page preview reads and looks a whole lot like the comics that Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko did with these characters way back in the 60's, which is ostensibly when this issue of this series is set.

Wouldn't it be totally cool if Dan & Ty adjusted their visual and verbal tone to match the era they're supposed to be happening in? I guess we won't really know 'till the issues are finished (unless, of course, one of them pops up here to confirm or deny...)

This looks very, very impressive all around. The art looks fantastic, I'm very impressed with all of it. I'm glad to see Ty really flexing his artistic muscle in a style besides Timm's. This is a really great style he's using here, I mean just wowee, and I'm very impressed with the spot-on, very sensible colors. I really dig the overall rendering of the Torch here. Spidey looks great too of course. All in all, it looks very, very good, I'll definately pick this up :).

Yup, that's the plan. I'm trying to evoke each period that the stories take place in. It's a fairly bizarre process, for instance, in the early issues, you couldn't see Johnny's eyes, but by about FF#30 Kirby was putting the eyes in....so Spidey-Torch #1 is an eyeless Torch, but by ish #2, I could add details to his face since that was the style a few years later.

So there's Ditko and Kirby (and Ayers) bits in the first one, and Romita, Kane and Kirby bits in the second one, and Andru and Buscema bits in the third one, (which is as far as we've done so far.)

I hope folks pick it up BEFORE the trade, thanks. We have to eat.

I KNOW THIS IS A DC ANIMATED BOARD. I KNOW SPIDER-MAN AND H.TORCH ARE MARVEL.

But what I also know is that the team on this book brought b.t. and dini's BATMAN ANIMATED to new levels on paper--story-wise, art-wise, and character-wise.

With that said, I picked up the book. And laughed at the humorous moments--this is a well-written, beautifully-drawn book makes one feel like they've jumped into a world of nostalgia.

GREAT JOB, SLOTT AND TEMPLETON. I'm sure you are busy on other boards answering responses, now, though ;)
