I would imagine most of you reading this have seen both
SCALP TROULBLE and SLIGHTLY DAFFY. Who would agree with
me that the latter cartoon is just a pale imitation of the original?
The problem in the latter cartoon is that many of the best gags
from the original(the opening sequence, for instance) are either
watered down, or replaced by newer, and lesser ones.

Also, it had the EXACT SAME ending! They could have least
given it a different ending, don't you agree? And Freleng doesn't
fare well IMO when he tries to be Robert Clampett. As the saying
goes, accept no substitutes.

I would like top hear some opinions from the rest of you.

I think both are pretty good, I would hardly call "Slightly Daffy" and pale imitation...but I'd agree that "Scalp Trouble" is better simply because it's the original version of what is essentially the same film. I prefer the b/w version best, (I taped it from CN when they had it on once about 2 years ago). I have never seen a computer colorized version of "Scalp Trouble", or if I did, I don't remember it. I HAVE seen a redrawn/color version, and it was really, REALLY bad.

I agree with Matthew on everything he said. Slightly Daffy isn't a pale imitation of Scalp Trouble, though I do think Scalp Trouble has some better gags to it. I think Freleng did a good job with the few remakes of Clampett cartoons he and his unit did. I've seen far less enjoyable remakes.

I like the original version better. The remake seemed too choppy. Back at the old message board, I posted a list of differences between both cartoons, and I still have that list:

-The original opened up with a shot of the army headquarters, then a shot of the Army Post No. 13 sign, then it shows a soldier marching, but in SLIGHTLY DAFFY, it just opens up with the soldier marching.

-In the original, after the soldier asks “You seen any Indians around here?”, a whole bunch of Indians show up behind the soldier and say “No, no, no, no, no” and the soldier responds “That’s good”, but in the remake version, only 3 Indians show up behind the soldier and they say “Ehhhh, could be”, and the soldier looks around him in confusion.

-In the original, after the soldier continues marching, the scene irises in to another shot of the headquarters, then General Daffy comes marching out, but in the remake, after the soldier continues marching, it just cuts to Daffy marching out.

-In the original, after the soldiers rush out of their sleeping quarters and knock Daffy to the ground, the camera pans over a long line of the dopey soldiers, then Daffy notices that Porky is still sleeping, and the camera shows Porky snoring, but in the remake, after the soldiers knock Daffy to the ground, Daffy notices that Porky is still sleeping, and when Porky is snoring, he’s snoring to some kind of tune (I don’t know the name of it but I’ve heard it other times in WB cartoons).

-In the original, after the scene where Daffy says to Porky “I didn’t know you cared”, the camera shows an Indian peeking over at Daffy’s headquarters from the edge of a cliff, then the Indian lets off a signal, and the other Indians rush out of their tents, but in the remake version, the scene opens with the same scenario (Indian noticing Daffy’s headquarters, then signaling the other Indians) but the scene is slightly different and has some changes, like the signal being a call to Chief Sitting Pretty instead of a gigantic horn.

-A scene involving a cross-eyed Indian in the remake replaces a scene of the Indians riding their horses through a lake from the original.

-In the original, after the soldier sounds the trumpet, all the soldiers grab their rifles, then we see a soldier shooting at the Indians through his cabin window, then one Indians breaks into Daffy’s headquarters by burning an imprint of himself on the cabin wall with firewater. All of this is gone in the remake version.

-The soldiers tally marks on the score board are different in both versions (probably because the animators realized that they goofed with the tally marks in the original version, so that’s why they changed it in the remake).

-After the Indian says “Ten little Indian boys!” and knocks the soldier out, a short scene involving the soldier marking a tally on the “them” section of the score board is gone in the remake version.

-When Daffy is shooting all the Indians after he swallow the ammo, one scene gone from this part in the remake is where the tall Indian gets shot in the stomach with a cannonball, reducing him to a short Indian, and it’s replaced with a shot of 3 Indians shooting arrows off-screen then ducking.

-After the “Yanks Beat Indians” gag, a short shot of the Indians running away is added in the remake (for some reason).

Like what Matthew said, they're both good. "Scalp Trouble" is much better than its 1944 remake, though. I don't think "Scalp Trouble" was ever computer colorized, I only remember the really cruddy redrawn colored print with it's brown Daffy. Ugh!
