I'm coming up with a few Simpsons lines for a fic and here's what I got.

Lisa: Dad I just got an A on my Science test.
Homer: (looking at tv) Oh.
Lisa: Mom, look I got another A!
Marge: That's wonderful Lisa! Homer, say something!
Homer: What's an "A"?

It would be better if he said "What does the A stand for?"

Yeah, Homer should know the alphabet....he'd instead want to know what the A stood for.

I might have heard somewhere that long ago, "A" stood for Ace, "B" stood for Brilliant, "C" stood for Credit, "D" stood for Dumb and "F" stood for Flunk. It would explain why there is no E, and since it would be from the past they thought nothing of grading a kid "Dumb."

You could have Homer say happily (though not paying attention): "Congratulations, honey." That would make him come off as a loving father but, at the same time, rather stupid. :)

My school actually had an E grade. You could get an E if you had too many absences. It was like a 64 numerically, I believe, just below passing.

Most elementaries use some weird ESR system. Excellent, Subpar, Rotten (but most kids preferred retarded)

^ Obviously the grading systems vary from school to school. The one I attended used only three grades: E (excellent), S (satisfactory), and U (unsatisfactory.)
