...that is, where do the numerous OP movies or "specials" fit within the larger storyline? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

Don't know about the specials, but the movies...

Movie 1: Before the Arlong arc, I think.

Movie 2: After the Arlong arc.

Movie 3: After the Drum Island arc.

Movie 4: After the Alabaster arc.

Movie 5: Haven't seen it, so I dunno. It was only released last spring.

Isn't movie three out of continuity, beause it features Chopper but not Vivi?

Movie one does not have Sanji in it, so it takes place between ep 18 and 19 (18 being the Gaimon island ep, and ep 19 is Zoro's backstory and introduces Johnny and Yosaku)

Movie 2 Takes place at least after the Louge Town arc, seeing as Zoro has his new swords

Movie 3 is NOT in continuity seeing as Chopper is still dealing with being accepted as part of the crew, but Vivi is nowhere to be found. Well, she's in the Soccer special, but that counts even less....

Movie 4 Takes place shortly after the Alabasta arc because Robin is with them, Zoro is still kinda apprehnsive toward her, and Luffy's new bounty is still being distributed (a major plot point)

I havn't seen movie 5, but I assume it would take place after the Skypeia arc.

Don't know about the specials...
Just to clarify that, my online source for the subbed DVDs lists at least one "TV Special" and one "Winter Special" distinct from the regular TV episodes and the movies, but with no details to speak of. So, I couldn't say myself whether these are the usual half-hour length or one-off expanded episodes for TV. :confused:

One Special aired around ep 52-ish and invovled a trek to the Ocean's Navel, a world somehow beneath the ocean. (the entrance is a whirlpool) There a Laughing Pirate ransacked the villiage in the Navel and ruined their lives. so the locals don't liek pirates very much. The strawhats have to deal with huge animals, a talking bat and a possible zombie pirate. Also contains the " cute kid, who learns lesson" every other movie and filler arc has.The second special I BELEIVE is more elaboration on Chopper joining the crew and leaving Drum island. Plus some interesting insight into Luffy's heritage courtessy of Dr. Kureha (I saw this one HK subs, the quality was worse than the others so I'm not entirely positive if this was a special or not....)
