View Full Version : The Family Guy vs. Futurama Thread

Y'Know, though we once had a which is "funnier" thread awhile back, I don't think we ever had a general poll (at least none I found). Which I found rather odd. So here it is.

Basic question: Which show do you prefer?

Personally, I'd pick Family Guy by a bit. Futurama would probably win in all aspects with the exception of being funny, but FG manages to be funny enough that I would pick FG.

BUT HEY WHAT DO YOU GUYZ THINK

Like I posted in the other thread...

Family Guy is funny, okay. But Futurama is funny AND it has plotlines, character development, and loads of other things other than just...humor.

A while back I would have said Family Guy hands down. But now, after so many reruns, FG has grown somewhat stale while Futurama still seems somewhat fresh. I watch both, but I tend to enjoy Futurama more now that I've memorized every funny joke in FG.

Futurama, anybody who doesn't think otherwise are a bunch of badly spelled slang cuse words with a bunch of numbers in them that also double as letters!

I like futurama's quasi-ongoing plot.....it's not as episodic...

This is one of those tough questions, but I'll answer it as best as I can. See with me, I go through cycles. Every now and then one show will outweigh the other and I'll watch that more often. I'll go back and forth because Family Guy and Futurama are those shows that can keep you laughing over and over no matter how many times you see them. In the long run though, Futurama is more tolerable just because of its nature. It has complete stories with in-depth characters and deep plots. On the other hand, Family Guy is better for those who like spur-of-the-moment jokes. It's more so a slapstick comedy versus Futurama's type. But in the end I voted for Family Guy because it's the first TV series I bought on DVD. When I first watched it, it was that good so it kind of holds a special place. :D

Well I love this topic so time to fire up the Pundit-o-Tron.

I hate Family Guy, I always have. I didn't like the art style, I found the irreverence more offensive than not, and after about 5 seconds the jokes I didn't find offensive just weren't very funny. Plus the flash-edits annoyed me to no end, and when I watch it, I date the show by its jokes which really doesn't work for me.

Futurama though... Wow. Never has a TV show actually made me fall out of my chair while laughing so hard when I first saw it so many years ago. I like the more coherent storylines, the way they deliver punchlines, that they can make a touching moment work. Last night was the Iron Chef spoof and you knew it was coming half the show and when they did it... it still worked! Plus the clover episode about Fry's nephew! Futurama's humor is richer to me than Family Guy's cheap thrills and if I see an episode I haven't seen for a while it's still funny. I wish Futurama had continued for decades instead of the Simpsons.

Just my opinion.

Futurama for me as well....I've always considered it to be the best of Fox's prime-time cartoons....It's very funny, even on repeated viewings, has ongoing storylines and some character development, and some touching moments as well(The Sting,Luck of the Fryish, and Leela's Homeworld particularly)...I wish they'd been able to make more episodes(esp since the Simpsons seems a little less funny every season)...

Don't get me wrong,I like Family Guy,it's just that I like shows that have more than just comedy to them....

I vote Futurama, even though I like them both almost equally. Futurama wins because of better plots and character development.

Family Guy is definately the funniest of the 2, yet there's something about Futurama's concept which makes me like it more. Maybe because the characters have more feeling and the plot is usually better.
Or maybe it's because Family Guy is like a Simpsons clone?

Actually, I always thought Futurama was more like a Simpsons clone, just with it being done by Matt Groening and such. Anyway, while I like Futurama, I prefer Family Guy by a wide margin. I laugh out loud with FG, and I don't for Futurama.

Is it a case of which is better or funnier? If it's which is better, Futurama. If it's funnier, Family Guy. I love Futurama a lot, but I don't think it's that funny. When I watch FG I laugh a lot.

I really don't think Futurama is particularly funny, and I think it's too dark sometimes. I'm going with Family Guy. Easily the funniest show on TV.

I easily chose futurama. Family Guy's jokes are funny...the first ten times you see them. Futurama made me fall out of my seat laughing sometimes, which is something Family Guy hasn't been able to do. Besides that, Futuram has a plot, and it looks so much better. I swear Peter has only to expressions for his face:laughing and not laughing. I may sound like a Family Guy hater but I'm not.

P.S. A simpsons clone can only remain funny for so long before it gets stale.

Futurama by far. Family Guy is funny... but that's it. Futurama has real interesting plots, way more unique characters, serious plotlines, etc. Family Guy makes me laugh... Futurama amazes me.

Family Guy has too much shtick. By the time I'd gotten to the last few episodes I was feeling like I had seen them before. Like Peter will say something and boom you know a clip joke is coming about it.

Whereas Futurama was always surprising me. You never knew where you were going. Plus even though I've seen every episode a dozen time (well, an average) I'm still finding new jokes.

Family Guy

They're both good shows in each's right and even though Family Guy is predictible it still makes me laugh in one episode more than Futurama will in all of the series run.

I'm a huge fan of both, but I'll go with Futurama. It has one thing Family Guy sorely lacks...likeable characters. Most of FG's characters are asses (Peter), annoying (Meg), gimmicky (Peter's neighbors), or bland (Lois, Chris). On the other hand, there's not a member of Planet Express I find unlikeable. Plus, Family Guy plots always seem to revolve around Peter being a jerk in some way...kind of redundant.

That said, FG is better for a quick laugh. But Futurama owns it in terms of plot, characterization, and replay value.

Standard caveat: Both are wonderful shows, and I love them both, just to a VERY slightly differing extent and for differing reasons.

I think if someone, having never seen either show, sat down and watched every episode of FG in a row and then watched every episode of Futurama in a row, they'd come to the conclusion that FG is the better show. Sure, Futurama has the shiny animation, they'd say, and sure, it occasionally manages some touching moments in with the humor, but darnit, FG is just plain FUNNIER.

In retrospect, though, now that I have both shows on DVD in their entirety (not counting the upcoming new episodes of FG, that is, but I doubt they'll change anything) and have seen each episode multiple times either on DVD or Adult Swim, I have to say that Futurama stands up MUCH better under multiple viewings. Not to say that FG gets old fast-- far from it, thanks mostly to its high jokes-per-minute (JPM) count, FG is still plenty funny even after seeing each episode three or four times, which is WAAAAY ahead of the curve as far as television in general goes. But Futurama surpasses even that average. A lot of FG's gags are based on surprise value, and so they tend to depreciate in humor value the more you watch them-- they're still funny, just not as funny as they were the first time. Futurama's humor, on the other hand, has a lot of subtlety that you might tend to miss the first time around, so in general, it actually gets funnier the more you watch it.

Family guy was good, but I've seen it enough times already

Futurama I can watch again, but only if I watch it with a friend. Shows like that are just more funny that way for some reason. The show just tends to play off some of the old time sci-fi stuff that i'm more familiar with

This is kind of like asking: What's better, steak or ice cream? Family Guy and Futurama, while both comedies, try to accomplish two different things, and they both accomplish them very well.

I don't like the comparison much, but I'll go with the standard response that Family Guy makes me laugh more often, but Futurama has many other things going for it, like great characterizations and plotlines, that make it an excellent show as well.

In the end, I think Futurama is the superior show. With Family Guy, I'll laugh a whole lot during the show, but the jokes (save for a few inspired gags) will be forgotten shortly after the show is over. With Futurama, however, I remember most of the episodes for a long time, and really enjoy repeated viewings. And it's that staying power that, in my mind, gives Futurama the upper hand in this (slightly unfair) comparison.

I like both shows, but I have to say Futurama. Family Guy is boring to me since I have both of the DVDS. Plus, FG has too many unlikeable characters like really offensive idiots (Peter), uninteresting (Meg), and boring (Cleveland).

And Futurama has Dr. Zoidburg.

Ice cream. I never cared for steak much. Though, I did like that Steak, Egg, and Cheese Bagel at Mcdonald's. But, I don't think that was real steak...

Futurama all the way.

While Family Guy is funny, it doesn't feature the great humor, characters, and emotion that Futurama has.

So, I say, Futurama. By the way, Futurama is my favorite show and deserves to come back too. (I think Family Guy deserves the comeback it's getting.)

Futurama wins on plot and substance.

However, I'll pick the show that I would pic if I only had to watch one, and that would be Family Guy.

This is a pretty hard question to answer, but strangely enough, Nik answered it exactly like I would've. :o Family Guy is the funnier show, because that's all they focused on, but Futurama is the better show. It has deeper stories and is able to successfully mix their comedy with sometimes sad circumstances.

If i had to pick one show I'd usually be more willing to watch it would be Family Guy, just because I know what I'm getting from any episode.

I love both very much but Family guy wins. and its amazing how many small jokes you get when you move to new england. In Lethal Weapons where the New Yorkers go up to see the follage That actually happens. and the big grocery store here is stop and shop. But I have yet to find Quahog in RI.
