5.1 audio for English and Japanese, hyper-restored (almost reanimated) animation, commentaries from the English team. Basically, it's the best Eva had ever looked and sounded, with more background info than previously available. Oh, and it's across less discs. Whether you're already a fan, or you're looking to check out Eva for the first time, the Platinum Edition is the version to get.

Is there a website stating the difference between the original and the director's cut?

If you already own Eva, wait on Platinum

they could release THE BOX with all volumes, once all volumes have been released singularly

Is there a website stating the difference between the original and the director's cut? Here's my "Gary Tooze-wannabe" comparison of the many Eva dvd's. I used Angel Attack as the subject...

As people said, 5.1 audio, and a remastered picture. It is basically another trick to get people to waste their money on crap like Eva instead of something good. Every time ADV is low on profits, they seem to poop Eva right back out.

Except this was Gainax's project (they were the one who wanted to do it, and it cost more than the original animation budget to remaster it, so they weren't that cash strapped either) ADV just licenced it because there is money in it (obviously.)

And ADV hasn't been short on funds lately, if ever. They are financing numerous anime from the get go (Elfen Lied, Gantz, Kleidostar and Grrl Power to name a few) and they've got enough cash built up to work on the live action Eva.

So yeah, there you go.

And Gainax to a further extent. They go even more over the top, going as far to make Eva hentai to rake in even more dough. ADV could be worse, they could be doing the 8 disc set thing once more. Atleast the collection is only 6 discs this time. Of course that doesn't mean I'll be buying it. The video quality on the original release is good enough for me and I got to see the Director's Cut footage on the Anime Network.

The only series from ADV I'm looking forward to is Gilgamesh. I saw the first 3 episodes, and it was awesome, especially the artwork.

$20x5=100+25 for Vol. 1 w/box=$125. Compare that to Perfect Box for roughly $150. (Though it depends where you shop) Plus you get remastered video/audio and more special features (still light, but hey, most anime DVDs ARE).

I'm one of the lucky ones- this is my first time buying Evangelion so I'm not having to re-buy it. :p

P.S.: Volume 2 is a big improvement over Volume 1. I didn't HATE Volume 1, but the episodes in Vol. 2 were more fast-paced, had comic relief, and were overall more enjoyable.

Which version of Gilgamesh? The whole region where it originated had different versions of the same story

It's a 7 disc release, so it'd be about $145 for everything. Though if you got the PC boxset and wanted the director's cut episode you'd have to buy those two discs for another $40. Platinum will have the DC episodes along with the originals on that release.

I felt the opposite way. I feel the series started with a bang, and really had me enthralled with those initial 5 episodes (coincidently enough thats how things work out with the new release, of course with the one I own its 3 eps per DVD, and the initial 5 eps were spread over the first 2 discs). Things quickly nosedive with episode 6 as the filler starts to really become prevelent, first with far too much battle strategy against Ramiel, then Jet Alone, and Asuka's appearance topped it off. The show doesn't recover til episode 16, then we get taken on a nice roller coaster ride until the show blows up at the end.

Waidaminnit, Gainax actually made the Evangelion hentai themselves? I thought, like, either a fan-group or some chinese company made it.

Not that I'd put such things above Gainax, since they're still cranking out bondage Rei Ayanami resin kits and Eva dating sims.

I'm pretty positive that it was NOT made by Gainax, and was unauthorized. It was cheaply made stuff.

The only hentai-like thing I know of that was made by GAINAX was Re:Cutey Honey and thats not really hentai. You know the fact we're talking about this stuff is violating the faq.

Outside the Gainax PC Games, the closest you'd probably get is this (http://www.gainax.co.jp/goods/makura/index.html) (don't worry - not hentai). :D

For the Japanese PC games, you may need a Japanese version of Windows. Or emulators; I think there's somethng called J-Win. You can buy those games in many Japanese import sites like J-List and CD-Japan.

With any other release, I'd say no way, but ADV's biggest series is by far Evangelion, so I wouldn't actually be surprised.
