Okay the Appreciation Threads for Fire and B'Wana Beast were shut down by touchy mods. Hopefully a thread for appreciating one of the most cool characters on Justice League will fare better.
What I like about Hawkgirl:
She's tough but not really. The producers once said they were going for a cross between a fierce warrior and the Girl Next Door. Darned if they weren't succesful at this really weird goal. Hawkgirl is playful and funny and able to rip into a rage at the best moment. I dunno how they manage to make her so likable and relatable. They just do.
She has a great voice. Maria Canals simply does not get enough props for the range she gives Hawkgirl in her performance. Her scene with Solomon Grundy in The Terror Beyond was understated enough to be realistic and emotional enough to be tear inducing. A wonderful voice actress.
Her motives are complex. In Starcrossed she was placed in an unfair and impossible situation with no easy answers: Betray the teammates she had befriended and loved over the course of the series and allow humanity to die, or betray her own people for a war that would cost millions of future lives. She opted for her friends which showed a courage and resolution I admire greatly. Don't fool yourself. If you were placed on the exact same situation I doubt you'd have fared near as well.
Her design is beautiful. Honest to God she is the most beautiful woman in the history of the DC Animated Universe. Her gorgeous flowing red hair, her piercing beautiful green eyes and her wings, well they are just adorable.
Thank you to Bruce Timm and Dwayne McDuffie for bringing this wonderful character into our homes each week. What started off as a minor character in the comics has become one of the greatest, most beloved characters in the DCAU's 12 year history. My hat's off to you gentlemen and the lovely Maria Canals. Here's to many more characters as wonderful as Hawkgirl to come.

The first one was shut down because of the porno ring--that and an appreciation thread on a girl with flaming boobies was stupid.
B'wana...not sure why that was closed. Probably because it was pointless as well. I mean, c'mon. Appreciating Hawkgirl is one thing. But B'wana beast? :D

What do I like about Hawkgirl, well it would be far easier to make a what don't I like about her list. I like pretty much everything.
As I've stated in the parody Hawkgirl bashing thread, she really is exactly like my girlfriend other then the obvious (no wings) This of course makes me wish that JL was on ten years ago because it would be so easy to point to Hawkgirl and say I want a girl just like that instead of searching for her for ten years. Anyway here we go.
Voice acting, superbly done, you really never get a performance that sounds like it was mailed in.
The character herself, I admit I have a thing for redheads, especially winged ones (also like the Sorceress in He Man MotU), but even without that I would have liked Hawkgirl alot.
She's playful with pretty much everyone, I like the subtle jokes that she occasionally throws at the other characters, such as when she's made fun of Flash's skills in bed
Stubborn, won't admit to being wrong even when its clearly obvious that she is. I'm really stubborn myself so I need someone that can be just as stubborn as I am or I'd never get anything done
has a firey temper, I of course would call such temper tantrums cute which of course just causes bigger ones.
Is actually a very devoted and loving person once you get past the stubborn mean side. Someone that would sooner give up everything then betray her friends completely.
She's someone that would sooner go thru hell before she caused a friend or love one even the slightest uncomfort.
She's the only true woman of the orginal JL, to me Wonder Woman was more male then most of the league.
And I also like how they have GL deal with her while they are in a realationship, his conduct is exactly how it has to be for him to be with a girl like Hawkgirl.
Hawkgirl is easily one of the best animated characters of all time, though I do miss her not being thought of as hot by as many, once that cowl came off it seemed like everyone finally noticed her.

C'mon who DOESN'T appreciate B'wana Beast? Aside from People who've never seen This Little Piggy of couse.;)
Back to Hawkgirl. I like her mace too. It is a POWEFUL weapon and I like that it's resistant to magic.
I'd say Hawkgirl is my favorite JL character (other than GL and maybe Flash). I liked her in the first season, but she really grew on me as a character in the second. Looking forward to her JLU appearance.

Hawkgirl is easily one of the best animated characters of all time, though I do miss her not being thought of as hot by as many, once that cowl came off it seemed like everyone finally noticed her.Nicely put :) She's one of the first female characters I've seen portrayed as the resident scrapper of the team, kind of like Ironhide and Brawn were in Transformers. The fact that she's beautiful and has a more subdued, tender side when not in battle is a nice way to balance her out.
I've noticed that the characteristics some people hate her for are the same things that draw people to Hawkman, who is also brutal in a fight and relies on his weapons. I wonder why that is

Howdy,
I've always had a soft spot for the Hawks, so Hawkgirl's initial inclusion in the lineup was wicked cool, as far as I was concerned. Then again, I loved the fact that it was John Stewart as Green Lantern, even though it's not the same John Stewart in the comics.
Other than that, everything Fone Bone just said. Maria Canals totally rules as Hawkgirl, and she's probably the one thing I miss the most in the new season of Justice League Unlimited, other than the Flash.
If I had to pick one word to describe the Animated Age Hawkgirl, it'd be "passion." She's the one who will fling herself gleefully into anything she does. If she's going to do anything, she's not going to do it halfheartedly. It's why she can keep up with the rest of the League, despite having a list of powers that comes up short compared to the rest. She's the power of belief in herself and spirit overcoming just about anything you throw at her.
Obscure Hawkgirl trivia: according to the Hawkman Archive Vol. 1, Hawkgirl was modeled after a pretty redheaded secretary in the DC office pool (back when they were still called "secretaries"). I believe she ended up being Julie Schwartz's wife.
-- Ed/Ace
It's obvious that the Justice League 'Universe' wouldn't be what it is without its two of its strongest pillars (Conroy's Batman I s'pose gets the popularity vote as the show's poster boy) in Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, their arc IS the show almost. Both characters are able to pull the weight, so to speak.

I think it was Blackest Night. Flash was told to drag out the trial and made the comment about it hard for the fastest man alive to do anything slow. Hawkgirl countered with that would explain your luck with women.
Some other favorites of mine.

Hawkgirl is defnitely my favorite female DCAU character. I guess there's not much to add from what all the other's said, except she continues the legacy of awesome red heads in cartoon history....
Daphne
Dexter's Mom
Jessica Rabbit
Blossom
Major Doctor Ghastly
Wilma
Pebbles
Mary Jane
Phoenix
Red(from Droopy)
etc etc... truly a wonderful design on Shayera's "civilian" identity, and definitely one of my favorite JL members. I especially like her relationship with Wonder Woman. "It's not just the men, you stuck up....!" was awesome;)
Oh and I really do honestly like B'wana Beast. Sure the concept's goofy, but that's kind of the point. I'm sure the writers are aware. However, if you believe that he's an exception to the rule of "there's no such thing as a bad character," go read Animal Man by Grant Morrison. That's some good stuff, and more impressively some good B'wana Beast stuff .
Besides making fun of 'Beast is like picking on the wee scrawny kid on the playground, no challenge to it at all, aye? How could it not be cool to se B'wana Beast come flying in on a Rhino/Eagle beast he merged? It couldn't that's how;)(I sound like a Futurama writer)
Anyway, I'm really glad Timm and co' decided to put Shayera in the show.

Before this series started I always thought the Hawkgirl/woman character was lame but Timm and company definitely changed that in my mind with there fine interpretation of the character. She isn't my favorite female (I like WW more) but They made her highly interesting and for that I am appreciative.

I would have liked Hawkgirl if there were some peaceful women on that show. Why the men get personalities (Superman vs. Batman) and the women don't is beyond me. Evil clones, renegade "sisters," screaming damsels in distress who find the time to tell off second-rate heroes during zero hour. I just expected more...

Well, here's my Hawkgirl story first, then why I love her
I hear Justice League's roster. I think "Hawkgirl? She's a sidekick! I understand the need for another girl on the team, but why not Black Canary?"
Then, I get to see Hawkgirl in action, throughout the first season, and she really grows on me.
She's got a great personality, fights like a maniac, is passionate about everything she does, and is the Leaguer I would most like to be friends with.
And damn it, she's gorgeous! I'm partial to redheads, always have been, but also her piercing green eyes (I know she's an alien, but MAN she looks Irish!), figure like a supermodel.......and hey,the fact that her wings are an actual part of her body just makes her all the more exotic and pretty....she's like an angel with those.

Fone Bone, you weren't anywhere near as harsh as Wayman usually is, who has gotten to the point where he's let some of his anger out on the voice actress behind Hawkgirl. That's just low, considering Hawkgirl is just a cartoon character and NO cartoon character should make someone that angry. Wayman, when or if you read this, could you please tone it down? He's got a lot of knowledge about the comics and it's nice to have another musician on board, but it's tiresome reading his posts about how much he hates a cartoon character. The reason my original response was so angry is because I had worked very hard at the essay at the beginning of the thread and to have this particular thread hijacked made me upset. I took it a little personally.
I know how you feel, Fone Bone. Sometimes it can get irking. Like when I started a thread for a legitimate disscussion of JLU as a whole, *someone* hijacked (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?p=1410711) it for an argument about Aquaman. That was a little irking but I didn't complain about it.
But I was really sad to see the complaint thread closed. The whole thing was meant to be a parody of ourselves and the sometimes obsessive bashing we can do of a fictional character, of whom Hawkgirl has been a major recipient. It was never meant to actually be malicious and almost everyone understood that. It was going great until *someone* didn't get (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?p=1444119)the joke. I was sad to see it go particularly because it got malicious. But you have to take it in stride.
I'm actually glad you started this thread Fone Bone to cosmically off set my thread, and I was quick to take advantage of it to show my love. You do good work, so don't be discouraged. :D

Oh, I don't have the cajones for that one. Although, even the Mods would have to go against such a thread I don't think their hearts would be in it...

Karkull closed my B'wana Beast thread for no good reason...though I still theorize it was because of "B'wana Envy."

You know Wayman, I don't appreciate you coming into the Hawkgirl Appreciation thread, and basically trying to prove that we Hawkgirl fans are cretins. THIS thread is for Hawkgirl compliments not juvenile fanboy whining.
Edit: I'm sorry Wayman. That came off harsher than I intended. I was just very upset. Please don't hijack this thread. We Hawkgirl fans need a place too.:sad:I was just curious to see how much positivity the character could possibly generate, I wasn't THAT harsh as I have been in the past, c'mon even you'll admit that.
But look what happened to the other thread it really wasn't a Hawkgirl bash thread, it was a contrived farscicle one without any real substance behind it that didn't remotely live up to the supposed title of the thread. Somehow it got turned into this fluffy, over-the-top, non sequitur insults and thread. I found that mood hollow, corny and boring:yawn:.
If he asked who'd want an Aquaman anything you'd have jumped on him in a second.Hahhahahaah ya know I probably would but you have to admit B'wana Beast isn't remotely in the iconic class that Aquaman is. I just think The "Krazymed" was trying to say that B'wana Beast wasn't a household name, which like him or not he really isn't. If you like him that's cool, there's some obscure characters I like too like Stingray in Marvel.
The thing is, it's ok if he hates Hawkgirl, but he just doesn't need to say it all the time. I like Wayman, I really do. He's got a lot of knowledge about the comics and it's nice to have another musician on board, but it's tiresome reading his posts about how much he hates a cartoon character. I'm guilty myself of having repeatedly ragged on The Batman, but I realized (with the help of a few others) that I was leaning towards being a jerk about it, so I stopped posting for the most part when it comes to that show. Thanks GMahler, I'll try to work on it, but hating Hawkgirl isn't exactly something you could broach to a psychologist or there isn't any specific medication for, at least not yet. Maybe someday they'll come out with a Hawkgirl coping med called "Maceium" or "Hawkprexa" or something.
Yeah, well whenever you make a thread about Hawkgirl, Wayman's bound to show up. Just like when you make a thread about Flash, RAINMAN is bound to show up.Yeah, that's pretty much my personalized version of the Bat-signal. You say the word Hawkgirl and I'll come swooping out of the shadows.

That was a little irking but I didn't complain about it:evil: ..Did I do that:confused: wow, I'm sorry I just didn't realize it. My passion for Aquaman blinded my retention of the thread title, my apologies. I didn't think or wasn't told I was treading on anyone's cyber thunder. Sorry man, it seemed pertinent at the time and people joined in gleefully be it with or against me.

Where was it stated you had to bash her in the exact same innane way? You don't honestly think that cutesy cyber fluff was over my head:confused:? I think if you're going to bash Hawkgirl, do it all the way or don't do it at all even under the safe umbrella of parody. THAT and I got so presumptiously excited that there was a safe haven or headquarters to slam Hawkgirl that I never bothered to read the very very very fine print, terms and conditions. BUT in a sense wasn't THAT the Wayman Tisdale complaint thread? I mean it was essentially a way to abstractly vent about about MM606 and myself while not directly being culpable of singling us out specifically or directly to cause flame wars? Color me egocentric but I sure took it that way.

*Ahem* HawkGirl is #1 to me. She's sweet and powerful too. She's not like wonder woman and is more real.
She's an ideal real female role model.
In fact I appericate HG so much I drew her ;-)

Sorry you didn't appreciate the humor, but I did try to make it painfully obvious that it wasn't a serious thread, (part of the reason I called it the "unofficial" thread, meaning an official one that's deadly serious could still be in the cards.) So sorry, maybe I shouldn't have singled you out in the secondary case. And for the record, I don't think there's anything wrong with you slamming Hawkgirl. If you don't like her, you don't like her, and I won't say you should. But veering the nonsense thread into seriousness just because you didn't think it should be nonsense, well, I don't think that's right.

Well, you are either VERY egocentric, or you are very, very, shrewd. ;) Ofcourse, I couldn't ruin things by comfirming it one way or another, so I'll just let you wonder about my real motives.
Oh, maybe I'm sounding a little mean spirited right now, and I should be more even handed, but you slipped a little devil smiley into one of your quotes of me, which I consider not only unethical but rather insulting. I mean, who are you to "augment" my quote by your interpretaion of my emotional tone?

Hawkgirl is a complex character who understands her own mistakes. I love about her character is that she has a strong sense of right and wrong and is willing to do the right thing even if at the end she loses out.
I enjoy this character so much that Hawkgirl is my halloween costume this year as shown by my avatar which is me in my costume. Been working since April...cool beans huh?
I look forward to seeing her again this season on JLU and hopefully next season as well.

If you go back and read my posts I sprinkled in non sequitur jokes in with semi-serious rants almost everytime. I tried to mix it up because I was bored with the fluff just for ME, it was the mods that deemed it closed. That thread could've easily lived on, you know how anal or uptight it can get around here sometimes when it's not totally smooth or in a neat little package. Threads gets closed down like an Arby's in Bel Air or a bootlegged DVD sidewalk sale in Chinatown for seemingly no apparent reason or waaaaay too fast almost all the time. It actually scares me sometimes how sanitized and censored it gets in these parts:sad: whenever the conversation gets a tad heated or passionate or for uber-uptight "spoiler" warnings. But as b.t. himself said if everybody just agreed on everything it would be a pretty boring place to interact and almost seem creepy in a cultish kind of way.
Well, you are either VERY egocentric, or you are very, very, shrewd. ;) Ofcourse, I couldn't ruin things by comfirming it one way or another, so I'll just let you wonder about my real motives. Now all that is needed is for a Hawkgirl custom availible for adults at stores/online. Yours looks very well done. Hope that the wings are at least knee length though, if not a little longer.

That costume is VERY cute! So are you!:anime:Thanks. A man can never compliment a woman enough.
Now all that is needed is for a Hawkgirl custom availible for adults at stores/online. Yours looks very well done. Hope that the wings are at least knee length though, if not a little longer. The wings are 5 feet tall and I am approx. 5' 7" so they go to my upper shins. It was not easy as I did not want a harness so the wings had to be light enough so the bodice could support them.
The crowning glory is the mask. I had it custom made as it can not be found. And to illustrate how difficult it was to put the costume together, I even had to have the belt buckle custom made as I could not find a round or oval white belt buckle anywhere.
The bodice and bottoms were made by a seamstress but the design was simple thankfully.
The boots are great (much nicer than the character design boots) but not seen in the pic.
I even had to get a wig shop to order special wigs as I wanted hair that looked real but still had an orange highlight to it.
Earrings were easy...can we say swapmeet?
D_A
BTW...the female cartoon characters must have 15" waists (must be size -10 if such size exists). I have a 26 1/2" waist (size 4); therefore the costume does not dip as much in the waist as it should. That was sort of depressing.

Actually seeing that picture of Devil's Advocate reminds me of another reason I like Hawkgirl: The colorful costume. Not since Dick Grayson's Robin has there been a costume with such wild, yet complimentary colors. It just looks neat.

There are no words to express my love for Hawkgirl.
Wait, maybe there are, let me think for a second.
Shayera is instinct. Many people hate her for being 'rash', as opposed to Batman thinking everything through. Both of these approaches can work, depending on the circumstances. Sometimes thinking for too long can make everything go kaput.
She's instinct, she's emotion, and after Starcrossed she became confused morality. Before, she was a fun, upbeat character, but with such a deep, tender side to her. Now she's trying to find herself, and do best for the world she lives in without doing any harm, and now that means just keeping herself tucked away until she figures things out.
And, y'know, the red hair and wings don't hurt much either. ^^ Maybe I'll have some more words later.

Dev, that costume is SWEET. Wehn I found out the hair was a wig, i was a little bummed, tho...I was hoping you were really a redhead. Is the wig attached to the helmet? Or can you go around looking like an unmasked Shayera as well?
And also, are you a comic book fan as well? Or were you only drawn to these characters through the cartoon?

Dev, that costume is SWEET. Thanks. I am pretty proud how it came out.
Wehn I found out the hair was a wig, i was a little bummed, tho...I was hoping you were really a redhead. I'm a long haired brunette but if I spend lots of time in the sun, I get red highlights in my hair.
Is the wig attached to the helmet? Or can you go around looking like an unmasked Shayera as well?Nope the wig is not attached to the helmet so I can go around without the mask. But alas I have the very dark (almost black) brown eyes so in the mask my natural eye color works but without the mask, I am a brown eyed Shayera.
And also, are you a comic book fan as well? Or were you only drawn to these characters through the cartoon?Sorry, not a comic book fan. Became interested in the show when coming home at 10:30 pm from work and flipping stations. Though I have picked up a comic for the first time thanks to Joss Whedon.
Back to Hawkgirl appreciating....it was her strong, impulsive personality that made me interested in JL and hooked me to the show.

Hmm, a Joss Whedon fan AND a Hawkgirl costume. You just keep getting held higher in my estimation.
I'm a fan of Hawkgirl's impulsiveness too. In Secret Origins, even though it was kind of lame the way the characters were fighting, I found it funny when she rushed off into battle and Superman of all people looked at her like she was crazy.:D

She has beautiful plumage.
Seriously though, I was sorta surprised when I saw her in the line-up way back when. I was surprised that her design translated over so faithfully, though I was very happy the green portions of her costume were black with a green rim lighting. I'm used to her color scheme now, but I always thought she looked a little clashy in the comics and never considered her to be DCAU material, though now that many more out there costumes and characters have been translated, that stigma is pretty much gone for me.
I wasn't too crazy about her from the beginning, but she won me over in The Brave and Bold where she took a whack at the force field. That was the moment where I accepted her and actually thought she stood ahead of the bunch of newbie heroes. Of course, that moment gave a strong Wolverine vibe, too, so that's always a nice trait to have...
I must admit I appreciate her. Though, I don't appreciate her Thanagarian habit of cleaning her feathers with her teeth, sicko...
