View Full Version : Unoffensive cartoons that Cartoon Network never shows

I have to admit it is nice that CN is now airing WB and MGM one-shots on a regular basis again. But there are a few harmless cartoons that I have yet to see on CN. Most have no offensive content at all:
"The Merry Old Soul" (1935)
"I'm a Big Shot Now" (1936)
"Bars and Stripes Forever" (1939)
"Ceiling Hero" (1940)
"The Sheepish Wolf" (1942)
"Behind the Meat Ball" (1945)
Any others to add to the list?

I remember seeing "King Cole" when I first got CN, and all they aired were pre-1948 cartoons. But that was ONCE. Wish I'd taped it. There is also "Crockett-Doodle Doo", I've never seen that one before, anywhere. Foghorn isn't offensive, is he? There are also a couple of cartoons like "Saps in Chaps", "Hobby Horse Laffs", "Joe Glow the Firefly" and "Gopher Goofy", which have never appeared, though LNB/W would be a perfect place for them. Also, none of the new stuff like "Chariots of Fur" or "Another Froggy Evening" ever appears either.

Also rarely shown:
"Honeymoon Hotel"
"Catch as Cats Can"
"The Unbearable Bear"
For some reason, Warner Bros. didn't give CN the rights air most of the recent shorts. I've been told that CN must work out special arrangements with WB when they want to show those (like the showings of "From Hare to Eternity" and "Carrotblanca" during June Bugs).

I know there's an india-whoops, sorry, I mean, NATIVE AMERICAN rain dance gag in Crockett-Doodle_doo -otherwise its the usual Foghorn/Egghead stuff.
The Sheepish Wolf has a "Black Sheep" character in it.
Behind The Meat Ball's premise involves WWII meat-rationing. My guess would be that they figure the "Kiddies" won't understand it.

Those early 1933-1934 B&W Merrie Melodies (such as "Sittin' on the Backyard Fence," "Shake Your Powder Puff," and "Rhythm in the Bow") aren't offensive at all (except for "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule") and CN still doesn't show them! The same goes for the Buddy cartoons.

Rhythm In The Bow has a rather un-PC scene in it, which might keep it off the air totally....I won't disclose it here but you can PM me for the details.
Saps In Chaps has that cowboy laughing sequence ("stop it, you're killing me") which is enough to keep it off the air, I believe. Even if that scene got censored out, there's still the Native American "rodeo" scene that's missing from a lot of prints I've seen of it.

"Behind The Meat Ball" was on CN's ACME HOUR not too long ago. I have also seen "The Sheepish Wolf" with the 'black sheep' gag edited out, naturally.
A few more 'toons rarely seen/never shown on CN:
"Wise Quackers" - broadcast once late at night
"Crockett-Doodle-Do"
"Tom Tom Tomcat"
any of the Daffy/Speedy shorts
one-shot B&W Looney Tunes
Again, how about showing "Puss N' Booty" in its original B&W form? Burn all the friggin' redrawns!

Perhaps the reason that CN doesn't show some of these cartoons is probably not due to PICness, but more due to the fact that they don't have prints of these cartoons. That's probably why CN doesn't show Buddy cartoons. You remember that episode of LNB&W. They showed nothing but good old PIC cartoons.

Of the ones you list, I've seen four, maybe five (I think I saw Ceiling Hero once). The only one I don't recall seeing on CN is The Merry Old Soul. But they are fairly infrequent, true.

I should clarify one thing -- I have only had CN for a little over one year now. In that period I haven't seen any of the cartoons I listed.
Also, CN has never aired "Wise Quackers". The claim that it was shown at the end of a late night edition of the Acme Hour was just a hoax post on the old board by "Vandermarcus" (our former resident jerk/prankster).
There are also a few Harman-Ising B&W Merrie Melodies that I have never seen on LNB&W (and I haven't missed a single episode of LNB&W since I got CN!):
"Pagan Moon"
"Red-Headed Baby"
"You Don't Know What You're Doin'!"
Also, "Milk and Money" has only aired ONCE in B&W on LNB&W. It aired before I had CN, and has never reaired since.

"Milk and Money" was aired on BUGS & DAFFY once or twice, computer colorized. I do have CN's airing of the B&W on tape, though...:)

Oh yeah. CN rarely shows "Porky the Wrestler."
I wonder why they hardly show such a classic.
I don't think CN has aired the early Harman-Ising cartoon, "Young and Healthy."
Or did they?

I don't know if this one counts, but I know I've never seen "Dog Gone South" on CN.
The last time I saw it was on ABC in the late 80s and I remember busting a gut laughing at what Charlie Dog does with the Colonel and his faithful companion!
Is there anything offensive in this one???

How about BLUE CAT BLUES? Why isn't that cartoon shown often?
Larry T, can you PM me about that scene in RHYTHM IN THE BOW, please? Also, what's wrong with that laughing scene in SAPS IN CHAPS?

Nutty News has played on LNB&W and the Bob Clampett Show. Also, as Jon said, CN doesn't have the rights to air the new Looney Tunes (strangely), and Daffy Duck For President was supposedly never made.

Yup, CN has aired "The Chocolate Chase" before. It aired with a CBS title card with pictures of Daffy and Speedy on it (and, of course, the familiar Saturday morning LT intro music! :) ).
Jack seems to be the only one that saw "Senorella" on CN. I haven't got any reports from anyone else.

I must be in some kind of time warp or void, or I dreamed it. All I remember was that it was the last cartoon on an episode of Bugs and Daffy, and that when someone posted the contents of the show on the old board they noted that it was the last cartoon WB made before closing down.

Except for the Harman/Ising pilot cartoon which introduced Bosko, CN has never aired a Bosko cartoon. He was the very first Looney Tunes star and his cartoons are certainly enjoyable even though Bosko himself had the same personality as Mickey Mouse.
Matthew Hunter
11-18-2001, 09:48 PM
What's interesting is that although Bosko resembles a black boy, his cartoons are actually less offensive than Buddy's. Buddy is perhaps the tamer character, but several of his cartoons have some pretty controversial gags (see "Buddy in Africa", "Buddy of the Apes"). What does Bosko do? Sings and entertains.

No, Nick never actually aired them. However, they WERE in the package of cartoons that Warner Bros. gave Nickelodeon the rights to air (along with cartoons like "The Ducktators", "Scrap Happy Daffy", and "Hocus Pocus Pow-Wow").
Pietro did say that he was listing "cartoons that Nickelodeon has shown or had"
"Tokio Jokio" and "Injun Trouble" would fall into the "or had" catagory.

Sheepish wolf if CN airs it will be cut,
there's a scene where a black sheep in a rochester voice goes up to the sheep dog and tells him about the wolf.
I got this in 16mm uncut SWEET!

You are probably thinking of "Porky's Midnight Matinee" which featured Porky and the same pygmy ant. The setting was backstage in a theatre. CN has aired that one before. "Porky's Ant" had Porky and his silent African companion (who looks a bit like Inki) in the jungle, hunting that same ant. CN has never aired that one, Nick didn't either.
