Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was originally set to open 2 days prior to Spider-Man 2, but Paramount ultimately decided that with that movie being highly competitive, and the rest of the summer in general really competitive, they decided to hold off until after the summer movie season with hopes that the movie would do much better. Well, at least in my opinion, not really. While 'Sky Captain' did come in first place this weekend, it only brought in $16.2 million. To add to it's chances, it came with a PG rating to lure just about every audience member there is, but still, not a lot of money. 'Sky Captain' cost about $70 million to make. I haven't seen it, but I think it looks good. It probably will do very well on video and DVD.

Meanwhile, Bernie Mac's new comedy Mr. 3000 opened in second place with $9.2 million.

Last week's number one movie Resident Evil: Apocalypse dropped to third place with $9 million and a $37.3 million total.

Also opening this week and in fourth place was Kirsten Dunst's new movie Wimbledon with $7.8 million.

Rounding out the top 5 is Cellular which made $6.8 million and has a $19.7 million total.

Just my own little note here, The Bourne Supremacy just keeps doing well. $170.5 million to it's name. I really can't wait for The Bourne Ultimatum now.

Opening next weekend are three new movies. First up is The Forgotten with Julianne Moore. Looks good.

Then we have First Daughter with Katie Holms. And lastly the British zombie horror comedy, Shaun of the Dead.

Here are your numbers...

1) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow- $16,200,000 ($16,200,000) NEW!
2) Mr. 3000- $9,200,000 ($9,200,000) NEW!
3) Resident Evil: Apocalypse- $9,000,000 ($37,375,000)
4) Wimbledon- $7,800,000 ($7,800,000) NEW!
5) Cellular- $6,875,000 ($19,789,000)
6) Without a Paddle- $3,715,000 ($50,409,000)
7) Hero- $2,955,985 ($46,209,638)
8) Napoleon Dynamite- $2,400,000 ($33,456,988)
9) Collateral- $2,300,000 ($96,000,000)
10) The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement- $2,000,000 ($91,940,000)
11) The Bourne Supremacy- $1,900,000 ($170,540,000)
12) Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid- $1,800,000 ($30,011,000)

Good to see Resident Evil still in the top 3, but not happy to hear that Sky Captain didn't get more money its first time outta the gate.

I'm sure there will be decent word-of-mouth for Sky Captain. I'll see it next weekend, and it seems like most people on this board who didn't see it this weekend plan to see it. I'm betting it will make at least $50 million. I was hoping it would do better, though.

Has there been any marketing for Wimbledon? This is the first I've heard of it, and the fact that it opened so well surprises me. Had anyone else heard of this?

Nice to see Napoleon Dynamite still in the top ten.

Yeah, I saw trailers for it like 3 times. Can't remember which films they were with, though... sorry. :(

On a side note: does anyone think, based on the trailer at least, that Wimbleton looked like a live-actiony Prince of Tennis? Or was that just me?

Not surprised about Sky Captain, but wtf is Mr 3000, and why did it beat RE?

That is just plain wrong!

Anyway, I saw RE again over the weekend, and it was just as awesome as it was last week.

A little off topic, but there was this hilarious movie trailer for a movie called Team America - World Police. It looked so freaking stupid I will definitely see it on DVD. It was like that horrid Thunderbirds series, only the strings were meant to be seen. There was one scene were the guys started doing Matrix moves, and the strings moving around were just funny. All the terrorists in the movie looked liked Bin Laden.

Yeah, it from the guys who do South Park...

I'm not surprised to see Sky Captain do so low...

It doesn't look that good to me  and since summer season for the box office is over, not many people are running out to see movies.

I'm also not surprised to see Mr. 3000 do badly, it doesn't look good at all.

I just got back from seeing Sky Captain and really enjoyed it. Too bad it didn't make more on it's opening weekend. Next week I plan on seeing Shaun of the Dead and probably won't see another movie to the American remake of "The Grudge" and Trey Parker and Matt Stones "Team America: World Police" both due out in October.

Team America looks funny as hell. Anyone think it might have an impact on the election?

And the release date for Alexander has been changed from to Nov. 5th to Nov. 24th and here's why.

lol Doubtful. IF any <insertobscenewordhere> is going to vote for Bush, they are going to no matter what.

ANyway, next movie I am willing to go (I say willing because I might get dragged to something else) to see is Alexander. I have no interest in The Grudge because it has SMG in it, plus it is another remake of a Jp movie, and it looks like The Ring, and I hated The Ring.

Never heard of Shaun of the Dead.

Wow. Sky Captain at #1. Never woulda predicted that.
Even though I loved it, it's the sort of movie that the general public never seems to "get".

As far as I know, Team America makes fun of everyone pretty equally. That's what South Park did, and I suspect that's what they'll do with Team America. So I really don't see how this could help or hurt either candidate. Besides, if a significant number of people were to get their political beliefs from marionettes controlled by Parker and Stone, then this country is in a lot more trouble than we thought.

yeah.. flying high, the captain of the sky.. to an ant, anyway. only a couple of stories above the ground, and his plane's engines are both on fire. crash.

i wonder how many $5.50 dvds at your walmarts it would take to eke out even an break even for the crashin' captain?

on a side note on walmart, there's a new one being built in my hometown, with one in port isabel on the move to the other side of the highway.

I think we are going to see something very unusual next week,,so watch for it, the gross of Sky Captain, will go up..maybe 20 million, maybe a lot more...why, it iis a fun film, every one says so...When a movie gross goes up, it is rare..You can count those that do in a year, on one hand, I think this one, because it is so much of what Spiderman I and II are, just plain fun, will be the biggist surprise of the year.. And I will see it next wee, too , or maybe earlier..I like fun, too much serious stuff, need escape..Stuart

I can't wait for Shaun of the Dead I think it looks great. About time it got here to the U.S. from what I've heard it's already out on DVD in Europe. Hopefully it fairs well in the box office. Other then Shaun of the Dead the only movie that has me interested after it is Saw but that's not out till the end of October. Everyone go see Shaun of the Dead! :p

But don't forget to stay to see Sky Captain five times afterward! I'll be seeing it next weekend.

I hope you are right. i don't expect it to drop too much, in any case; there isn't much competition.

Shame Sky Captain got such low numbers despite coming in #1, although I'm not all that worried yet on it's ability to get 60 million more between now and its final international release. The 70 million budget should be an easy one to overcome...although this may not boad too well for the loosely planned prequel with Jude Law and Jolie's characters explaining their history together.

Hopefully it'll be just as strong, if not more next week. The Forgotten certainly looks interesting. If I wasn't going to go see Sky Captain this weekend, I'd probably go see that movie.

Next week, I think The Forgotten will take the lead as #1, with Sky Captain at #2, Mr. 3000 at #3, and Wimbleton at #4. Judging by Resident Evil 2's 60% drop from last week...I'm not thinking it'll be in the top 4, perhaps top 5?

I'm not surprised to see Sky Captain finishing number one, but I did think it would make more than it did. It's unfortunate that it didn't, but hopefully it will have some lasting power at the box office. It looks like an interesting movie, that I plan on checking out myself.

Also not surprised by the rest of the top 5: Mr. 3000, RE:A, Wimbledon, Cellular. All these look like good movies, and I'm glad to see Cellular still hanging around the top 5.

I still have no clue how Without a Paddle is still floating so high in the rankings. However, I'm loving that Bourne Supremacy is still in the top 12.. Damon certainly has a hit on his hands. Next week, I'm looking forward to the Forgotten which looks good, and Shaun of the Dead which looked funny in the trailers. Haven't seen much of First Daughter promos, but I hope it's good mostly for Katie.

I saw Sky Captain, and didnt think much of it. Not going to get good word of mouth from me to my friends.

I don't think Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow will survive on word of mouth. It's a genre picture that's not going to attract alot of regular moviegoers. I think it'll fall sharply next week. I am glad to see Resident Evil: Apocalypse tumble down about 60%. With any luck it'll be out of the top ten quickly.

I kept seeing Wimbledon commercials on CN and ABC Family...surprised they'd air it, considering the "wager" made in the commercial.
