Plot: It's duck season, so Daffy plays hunter Elmer and a hungry fox off against each other.

Grade: B+

Comments and Observations:
1. What Makes Daffy Duck? Throw a rock at him! Okay, all joking aside, this is an excellent cartoon. I love how Daffy shoots off his mouth in just about every scene. How screwy, off-the-wall, and obnoxious he is. THIS is the Daffy Duck know and love! Not the later version.
2. Note Daffy's mention of Warner Bros. In the scene with the "imposter".
3. The classic "change season signs' first shows up at the end of the cartoon. Later used in Rabbit Fire.
4. Favorite Lines: Elmer: How am I supposed to catch that scwewy duck? Daffy: That's what I was wondering, my little nimrod!

Technical Information: Made in 1948, directed by Arthur Davis.

There is some really great zany animation in this one. I love a lot of Art Davis' Warner cartoons. The animation in them is always so loose and fluid, and What Makes Daffy Duck is one of his best.

And yes, I was watching it too on Bugs and Daffy about ten minutes ago.

I love this cartoon. I like most of Art Davis' stuff, but this is one of the best. I enjoy the fact that Daffy has more than one enemy for a change...very few Warner cartoons have multiple enemies for a character...only McKimson's Foghorn series and a few Sylvester and Tweety's would have several characters at a time trying for the same prey. Suppose you could count "The Wild Chase" too, but anyway... The Bugs/Daffy/Elmer trilogy doesn't exactly count, since both Bugs and Daffy are trying to escape Fudd. Back to the subject, though...I always liked the rivalry between Elmer and the fox, and the fact that Daffy must've met Fudd before, as he calls him by name ("I'm your duck, Elmer!"). In fact, this may be one of the only times Daffy calls him "Elmer" in any cartoon. I like the zany animation and hilarious gags, and the ending's a killer. I don't like what they did with the dubbed version though...too green.

Excellent cartoon. It's very funny. My favorite part is when Elmer gets stuck in that boot, and his head sticks out of it and he says "How am I ever gonna get that screwy duck???" I also like that CN still shows the un-dubbed version of this. Betcha that's not gonna last much longer.
