Greetings,
Long time lurker, first time poster and I'm jumping straight into the deep end with this 'What if' character design.

Wow! Cool picture! You did a nice job! Is that Max?

*shudders* That's Max isn't it? *Shudders once more* Nice rendering of suit, character and general finish. Welcome to non-lurking status!

Very nicely done, darkly atmospheric yet very vibrant. Welcome to the Drawing Board :)

I like it. You've got the style down great, the coloring is superb, and it's a cool batgirl design. I like the wing-like cape and the symbol is fitting. Did you do the background too? It also looks great.
I think it's Max too, which is fine since I thought she was going to become Batgirl anyway.:p

Yes it is supposed to be Max. I know some people don't care for the character, but I always thought she had potential. I don't know if she's Batgirl material but I was curious to see what a future batgirl costume might look like and Max was the only real candidate. ;)
If you have a real problem with her donning the suit then just pretend this is a personal fantasy of Max's, after all she did want to become more involved.

I originally wanted to do a furure version of Robin with Max, in the mold of the Frank Miller Robin, but the costume just didn't fit the era. So I ended up just giving her some green tinted lenses as a sideways tribute.

The wing/cape is my favourate element in this design. Like the Joker I missed the cape of the old Batman and the retractable wings never quite sat right with me, so I mixed the two up a bit.
The effect of which is that you get a nice view of her butt ...which was never intended, but worked out nice just the same ;)
To be honest I was more focued on how graceful it made her shoulders look, I didn't really register her behind until someone on another board pointed it out.

The symbol was changed more out of necessity than anything else.
I really wanted the cape to droop over the shoulders like that and I really wanted the blue Nightwing-ish trim so I had to squash the bat-logo into the space I was left with.

As for the background, no i didn't draw that myself. It's actually taken from Return of the Joker, I just used it for it's shades of blue. I did however replace the flat back background with a gradient to keep the suit in contrast, but that's all really.

You know, I always pictured Terry's brother as a new Robin. Of course he'd need to be a bit older.

Reverend

I had a similar thought but as you say he's quite a bit too young.
Also I doubt that Terry would endanger his own brother by allowing him to be Robin, especially knowing what happened to Tim Drake.

Sweet Work. The desing is really well done and so like the show's. Though I think the blue skin assasin chick could be an awsome batgirl, being all stealthy, wearing a small black cape, holding a black metal sword.

Here's a suggestion for a Batman Beyond Nightwing. Mainly keep the look of the torso part of the body the same as the Dick Grayson's nightwing from the newer eps of the orginal series, but give him a fully-covered mask, shape like a hawk's head(something simular the head of the mosnter form of the owner of the splicing company), sharp tallon-like fingers, and wings, jutting from his back, like some sort of gargoyle.

That's awesome! It doesn't look awkward at all, with the figure and such.

That's awesome! It doesn't look awkward at all, with the figure and such. Well it did help that I had Max's model sheet to trace over. ;)
Since this was just an exercise in design, not art, it was a real time saver.

I can see it just fine.
Anyone else having trouble?

It's back, it's great. Maybe this blue is too bright... You have red, and green, and blue...Shouldn't it be something darker?

Pyro
09-16-2004, 08:09 PM
Well, there's all that black...:p

Reverend
09-17-2004, 08:11 AM
The whole point of those colour highlights is to prevent the costume from being too black. Remember that Barb's old costume was always more colourful than Bruce's. As for the blue, it's already darker than the blue on Nightwing's costume, any darker and it'll be hard to distinguish from the black.

Here's something I'd like to tak your opinions on.
I've never been sure about the 'look' of the eyes (pardon the pun) on this design so I've sketched up a set of alternatives, two that retain the "Robin lenses" and two that do away with them.

Thoughts? Comments?

Can we see translucent blue lenses? Or opaque white ones (not like in the second picture, but larger, like on third, but white)?

Rune

Nice to see some different ideas with the eyes, I far and away prefer B & D to the others, B is nicely remote and unreadable, while D gives her the more human touch.

A is interesting, brings night vision or IR lenses to mind (more so if they actually were red of course) while the green opaque look for C makes for an almost insectoid appearance I have to admit I'm not too keen on.

Reverend
09-19-2004, 01:11 PM
In regards to the eye's, despite an overwhelming lead for option 'B' in the votes I've gathered from 4 boards, I'm going to defy democracy and stick with what I've got, with the option of switching to 'A' when the visor is turned off (sort of a HUD).

From a character standpoint Max isn't the most obviously capable in the fisticuffs department so I'm speculating that her role is more stealth, info gathering and spying. Presumably watching Terry's back and coordinating with Bruce back at the cave. Sort of an Oracle type role, but with her own costume and not stuck in a wheelchair.

As for the other costume possibilities...I just couldn't resist the design challenge. ;)

Because it's just Max in different costumes.

Thanks. I've actually been toying with the idea with doing a Nightwing Beyond Costume for Grayson, on the assumption that he hasn't retired quite yet...but probably should, given that he'd be in his mid 60's by then.

Nice coloring! I like the NW BB design best. That really works. Pity even in the future he's still not worked out that mullets aren't cool...

Mullets are cool, for those that can pull them off, hehe. And 60'ish in years is no biggie to a stud like Grayson ;)

A little behind here, but love the designs! Your costume designs are really fun and unusual, and the coloring is superb.
I definitely favored the B or D eye choices, lol, but it's always the artist's decision! The green eyes just didn't jive so much for me in the Batman and Robin designs. The Robin costume was very fun, I loved her headgear.

UPDATE

Apparantly the hair isn't popular so I've done these alternatives.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Reverend/Dick_NWB2.gif

Shorter hair in the GLC does make some sense, given that it's essencially a military organization.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/Reverend/Dick_GLB2.gif

And just for fun, here's Dick in his street threads.

Ok, here's my latest attempt at Max as Robin.
This one is a little less Shayera Hol more Carrie Kelley.

I like the old Dick Grayson - that's a great model. I love the idea too. Now, stop using Max or I might have to kill you!

Great crisp work. The Old Richard is my fav. Not overkeen on the NW mask, I think I prefer old NW without... maybe a slight trim too.. :)

*huggles old Dick Grayson* Grandpa!!!!

;)

That's an awesome old grayson rendering, especially since we never got to see him in BB. Love what he teaches too, lol.

SJJ: I'm sure you wouldn't complain if I made her Oracle instead, afterall think of how much fun you'll have seeing her get herself wheelchair ridden. ;)
Personally I rather like Max, so...:p

Barb: I thought it would be nice to show he's gon back to his roots. :D

Ok, I've decided to ditch the mexican wrestling hood in favour of the good old ponytail. I've also tweaked a few things, made the spurs more visible and redone the Nightwing beyond logo, the old one looked a little too crude.

Oo, love it!
The logo is very sharp looking.

please please please don't do an "Oracle" Max or I may have to stop loving you :p I like Max well enough, she was a fun and simple character...but don't taint the awesomness of the Oracle character....just keep tainting Batman, Robin and Batgirl, lol. No objections there, it's fun to see.

These are awesome. I'll even keep the fact I hate Max with every fibre of my being to a minimum while I review them. :)

I'm digging the first one you posted with Max as Batgirl most. I liked her with the green shades over her eyes most. I think it would look cool with a tint of blue in there though.

Some things are too awful to die, mullets are among them. Not seeing what Nightwing looked like in the future is one of the biggest regrets I have with Batman Beyond, I've seen a few fan renderings, but this one is the best so far. Futuristic, yet classic Nightwing at the same time. Did you draw over the model sheet with this one too, Kris?

Digging Max's boots in her Robin costume. The DKR look doesn't really suit Max, but I thought it looked stupid on Karrie too.

Some nice work mate!

Reverend

Don't worry Barb, I have something else in mind for Oracle. ;)

Yes Spidey, check your Max prejudice at the door when entering one of my threads. ;)

I know fans have been choming at the bit because of Grayson's absence post-TNBA, so I thought it would be a bit of fun to extrapolate what he might look like. As for the hair....don't ask me why but to me he just doesn't look right without the pony tail. It may be unfashionable but I think it suits him somehow.

I always rather liked the Carrie Kelly design, in an 80's retro-cyber-punk kinda way. Aside from that it seamed appropriate given that amount of DKR nods used throughout Batman Beyond, the most obvious example being the Kryptonian stomping power suit (why else would Bruce build that thing?) and the interior of the Batmobile (Rubber bullets...honest).

Very nice work there, every single one of those ('cept maybe the "head design" on the last Robin Beyond) really fits the style of the show and wouldn't look out of place. viery very nice, I alo like Max's little cape thingee

Reverend
12-13-2004, 01:27 PM
Well if you have a better alternative to the Robin head design I'm open to ideas.
The only ones I can think of are the basic face mask of the old Robin costume or the full on helmet, which some people might become confused given its distinct Thanagarian vibe.
Mind you, Nightwing's symbol isn't a million miles away from the one sported by Warhawk and "Lord Hawkgirl". I suppose if you put your mind to it you might come up with a story that links Grayson's "rebirth" to Hawkgirl's early appearances. After all Bruce did seam to know her already in Secret Origins.

I don't know, some sort of goggles maybe? More "glass" ones, with some kind of HUD like the one Terry has.

Reverend

Well that's basically what this visor already is, at least in my mind.

Why resurrect such an old thread you say? Well first, it's my thread, so :p. Second, James is bugging me to get Batman Beyond Stripped finished
(and rightly so) and I need to get back into a DCAU mindset.
So, here's a few pieces I've decided yo share with you lot.
A new take on the Batgirl Beyond idea. 1 (http://reverendtrigster.deviantart.com/art/Batgirl-Beyond-Cassandra-54691884), 2 (http://reverendtrigster.deviantart.com/art/Batgirl-Beyond-Cassandra-2-56681023) & 3 (http://reverendtrigster.deviantart.com/art/Birds-of-Prey-Beyond-56681546).

And for good measure, a design James and I contemplated using in BBS, but ended up not having any room for her. Wonder Woman Beyond (http://reverendtrigster.deviantart.com/art/Wonder-Woman-Beyond-70176088).
