Even though I'm one of the most notoriously ardent defenders of this series on the boards, (Not because I believe it's good because I have no opinion of it yet, but simply because I say we can't judge it until we've seen a few eps,) I have to agree with GMahler. It will never be superior to B:TAS ever. The only thing we can hope for it is that it will be at least half as good.

No, it's going to be quite some time before any version of Batman exceeds B:TAS. Even when Bruce Timm and co. took a second crack at the character in TNBA it wasn't as good. B:TAS is simply the best incarnation of Batman ever.

even though The Batman sounds pretty cool, i highly, HIGHLY doubt it will even touch BTAS.

It's a question with one answer. NO. Or maybe three if you include "never" and "not a chance".

I'm really turned off the Batman... but I feel like I owe it to you all to give it a chance now... god, I hate you guys! :p ;)

No. If The Batman somehow turned out to be better than BTAS my mind couldn't handle the awesomeness and my head would explode. BTAS was the perfect adaptation of the Batman mythos and you can't exceed perfection.

From the bits of the series I've seen, including the pilot episode, I can say that, artistically, it can be on par with BTAS any day. The two styles are different, and very unique - and both fit the surreal setting that is Gotham City.

Hell, even the music and voice acting, once everyone hits their stride, should be comparable.

But the writing...ugh, no. The writing of the series cannot match BTAS, and never will, given the more child-friendly premise the show has. Can it be good and entertaining? Yes. But surpass BTAS? Nope.

In fact, as someone mentioned earlier, lightning didn't even strike twice for Timm & Company when they did TNBA. A few episodes were on par with BTAS' best, but by far and large, it was a step down in absolutely every department. Part of that was because the WB wanted a new direction for the series, part because the producers changed a lot of character designs, and partly just because after you do the same thing for SO long, you just aren't as fresh.

So...yeah. BTAS still remains the best animated version of Batman to date - and the best incarnation of the character off of the comic book page. BATMAN BEGINS may surpass it, but it's tough to compare a 12 year TV stint to one major motion picture. THE BATMAN most certainly will not challenge BTAS to this title, though.

My thoughts exactly. I'll just enjoy it for what it is, and not by comparing it to BTAS.

I disagree on the voice acting. From what I've heard from The Batman (Batman, Bane, Penguin, Joker, Catwoman) B:TAS outshines it in the VA department as much as it will in the writing. Although, I look forward to hearing Ron Pearlman as Killer Croc. But Adam West as the mayor was killed by his design.

(btw, this is comparing it to earlier episodes of B:TAS (which I watched recently), so not to be unfair.)

Oh, boy. This is destined to become the Topic That Will Never Die, DCAU's equivalent of "Which is better, X-Men TAS or Evo?" on the Marvel board.

Me, I'm going out of my way to avoid all info on The Batman-- I prefer to watch a show with no preconceptions caused by making unfair judgments based on a work in progress rather than a final product.

That said, TimTwoFace has a point when he says that if Timm & Co. couldn't duplicate their unprecedented success with B: TAS when they did TNBA, then no one will ever be able to.

maybe it will start off slow but get worlds better in later seasons just like Xmen Evo did so I'm not counting The Batman out yet :)

If TNBA, a follow-up series based in the same continuity couldn't even delcare itself to be better than BTAS, I highly doubt a show, in this day and age, can even touch what BTAS did.

I'll give the show a shot, but I can already tell you it won't touch BTAS--BTAS was not only, in my opinion, the ultimate portrayal of Batman, but it also had some groundbreaking things that are still being used in animation today.

To me, The Batman will be nothing more than another Static Shock--except this time with marketing and toys. :p

Yeah, BTAS will always reign supreme, if not, I can safely say that The Batman wont be the one to dethrone it, that's for sure.

52 eps or less of this series and it will be forgotten. Nuff said.

How do you compare a show with zero airings to one that has had a ton of episodes? Anyway I cant call it having never really liked BTAS as much as some so it could possibly be better in my eyes but I have to see some of it first.

I have to disagree with everyone. You can't judge the quality of the writing until it airs. I'm not expecting ti to be better than Batman: The Animated Series, but I'm not making outright and outlandish statements that it won't even touch it withouth having seen it first.

I can't speak for everyone, but i have say this new version brings a lot of bitterness from those who think that BTAS and BTNA were taking off prematurely. I remember hearing about certain execs not "getting" the cartoon drama. Then we get Batman Beyond and then find that it's creative crew will exclusively be working on zeta. There was so much left for the Batman we know now. Honestly, chances are this series will be here to ride the hype of the movie and nothing more. Once the fad has passed the WB will "move on"(probaly after 52 eps). Execs don't take the series that they create as seriously as the fans. So i doubt they'll put too much into it that will be worth watching.

So some preliminary opinion has come back that the writing, particularly the dialogue, was only mediocre. But you're right, judging on these few scraps isn't fair and I'm saving forming an opinion on it until I've seen 5 episodes. After all, even B:TAS committed a few atrocities in it's early days. ("Alright Joker! It's time for a little Batmagic!" I seriously can't envision Kevin Conroy reading that line during the dialogue dub without physically wincing.)

Who voted yes? I hope that poster was kidding, unless of course they really do think it will be better...as hard as that is to believe.
I voted yes, if only to draw the ire and flames of all the Timmophiles:evil: .
You know, there is a saying that goes something along the lines like we tend to look fondly upon the past, and that we tend to cloud our judgement of the past. We tend to not remember things as they are, but how we think they are/were.
And BTW, I hope The Batman does well, although I don't think I'll be watching it. I've got a whole season of Teen Titans and JLU to keep my interest(along with 13 units at school and working per 40 hours per week). I see too much of the Bat in JLU, I am about to overdose on Batman. I'd much rather have a GL Corps series set in space, but that is just me.
