View Full Version : Would you want to live in a world of superheroes?

I was thinking how cool it would be if Superheroes were real. Until, I start thinking about all of the bad things that would come with it. For example look at what happens when Supes gets into a fight. City blocks get destroyed. And don't forgot all of the people obliterated in Coast City. Just curious to what others think.

I would LOVE to live in a world where Superheroes where real.Gotham to be specific. Then my dream guy would be real and in order to grab his attention, I'll just have to get in trouble!;)

Ugh... I'd hate it. It's an interesting question, for a lot of different reasons, but I can most definitely say it would not be for me. A big part of my rationale comes from Kingdom Come-- in a world dominated by superbeings, how can humanity feel as if its controlling its own direction?

For an interesting take on the Everyman's position in the Marvel universe, check out Busiek and Ross' Marvels, which explores the experience of ordinary humans in an extraordinary world. I'm still not quite sure how I like the book but it's definitely got me thinking.

I wouldn't mind living in a world of superheroes.. As long as I was one, or involved in a relationship with one. :D Let me be a Superboy, or Robin or Conner Hawke.. or involved with WW, Black Cat, or Catwoman.. And I'd be very happy to live in a superhero world..

But I'd hate to be a helpless person in such a world.. because so much danger seems to be always around.. I'd rather be involved than just there.

No. I agree with randomguy. Also, with heroes come villains, and we have enough bad things happening in the world right now, eh?

Only if I got to seek out Captain Britian and shake that man's hand! :D

In all seriousness, this kind of brings "Red Son" to mind for me....

I would like that, only if I'm a superhero too. :D

All depends...

Astro City... yeah, that could be cool.

Ultimates world? No way... too many civilians getting mowed down or eaten by the hulk while he's off to rape someone!!!

Marvel world? Maybe, but I'd get confused with 20 wolverines running around wiht everyone.

DC? Just as long as I'm not someone's significant other until Idenity Crisis is over.

Who?

No, way too many alien invasions and ancient gods and super-villains running around destroying things...:D however, if I had a chance to get my hands in a oanian ring, than things would be diferent....

Hmmm..... that's a hard one. I mean when there's heroes there's villains however I would love to have a super solider like Captain America around to help with the recent war and bring all of our troops back. I would best fit in the DC universe then anything. I think the whole modern age of Superheroes would be interesting to live in and actually have a JLA and Teen Titans and actually getting super powers and joining a team.

This is such a tough topic. You read about these heroes and you know you want to be them. But many problems come with it. There are ups and downs. How could anybody choose?

Howdy,

I think it'd really depend on what world of superheroes you're talking about:

- Astro City: Yeah, in a heartbeat. The first story of Family Album (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1563895528/qid=1094000675/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-1481014-5128128?v=glance&s=books) deals with exactly this question, and explains exactly why I'd be there.

- Watchmen/Authority/Ultimates: Never in a million years. We're distressingly close to this as it is.

- Bone: Would be fun until the Really Really Big Fight

- Cerebus: Far too much like real life, minus the talking aardvarks. No thanks.

- Conan: Plus side, there are tons of hot chicks with loose morals in skimpy clothing, sometimes with swords. Minus side, Conan and other musclebound manly men are gonna get to them first. Sitting squarely on the fence with this one, but leaning towards no.

- Y the Last Man: No no no no NOOOOOOO no. Seen what Yorick goes through. Not gonna do that.

- Promethea: Maybe. If anything, it'd probably be the only place where things make MORE sense if you're stoned out of your mind.

Actually, I could go for the world depicted in M. Shaymalan's Unbreakable. In that sort of world extraordinary people exist, but it's very subtle, almost undetectable. However, you have just enough strange going-ons to elicit a sense of wonder. A mysterious man dressed in an old, faded rain poncho rescues two children from a homicidal psychopath. He shows incredible strength snapping handcuffs and overpowering his clearly larger and more deadly opponent, as well as resistance to injury. He is repeatedly smashed into a wall to the point of nearly breaking through, yet he doesn't even flinch, let alone loosen his choke hold on the killer. After the villain is dispatched, this unreal samaritan leaves as silently as he came, his face shrouded in the night by a simple baseball cap and hood.

It's those little hints of the amazing that I love. They make us remember that impossibility is merely the sign of limited perception and imagination. Forget the God-like beings of Kypton and Val Halla, and the colorful schizos with their gimmicks. Gimme supermuscular children with the blood of Olympians, primitive exoskeletons to enhance our abilities, ponchos to make us near-invisible, and creepy teenagers in Russia with X-ray vision.

Oh wait. We already have those. :p

I think I'll stick with the real world, thanks. Though if I were to live in a superhero universe, probably tempted to choose the "Bronze Age" (1970's) DC or Marvel universes (Earth-One for DC's case, with frequent trips to Earth-Two and any other parallel worlds as I see fit... along with figuring out how to survive "Crisis" [if not outright prevent it] without being retconned to heck and back...)), figuring it's the halfway point between bizarre 60's goofiness and current superhero comics' rather-dreary, killjoy atmosphere...

If I'm allowed to throw comic strips, a visit to the worlds of "Get Fuzzy", "FoxTrot," or "Doonesbury" might be interesting...

I feel that this could be seen as a good thing as well. While I agree that things are pretty messed up now and the last thing we want to do is add a megalomaniacal supervillain with the means to either take over or destroy the world, it my be just what people need. Think about it...if Magneto were real who would be worrying about Saddam or Osama? If the world were threatened with enslavement from an alien race, who would care if they were fighting alongside someone of a different ethnicity? Now, you could say that real problems still exist within the comic book universe, but that's just written in there so we as readers have something to relate to--or is it so the superheroes can relate to us? It would be crazy, and yet interesting, and terrifying...and I would rather worry about something more tangible (like Juggernaut destoying an entire city), than whatever the government tells me to be scared of! :) The prescence of superheroes would also give people hope. Hope for a brighter future, hope for a end to poverty and unhappiness, hope that...you might catch a glimpse of a hot superheroine in next-to-nothing or spandex!!! Sorry, got a little off track... It might even give some of us some faith. I would have more faith in someone like Superman as opposed to what we've got--George W.

I'd love it. I don't agree that we'd have to take villains with the heroes. Most of the villains our favorite heroes battle are villains that would exist anyway, no fault of the hero. A good example of what I mean is in BtAS when the Arkham villains put Batman on trial.

So, with that said, a world with superheroes would be quite cool. Think about how much we need them already. Think of how different our world would be.

Of course, it's true, something like Kingdom Come could take place, but there will always be heroes to battle the rogues.

Not only would I like to see it, I'd try to take part, although, apart from Wolverine, not many people around 5'3" go very far.

sure would be nicer than living in this world WITHOUT any real superheros at all.

.. so when are you putting on the tights, ladies, and at least try to fight crime even if you have no powers?

heh... interesting... but would real world politics allow superheroes without trying to kill them or make them all government agents.. hmm....
