Nowadays a lot of fans seem to want to hate them for what they've been doing for the anime industry lately for various reasons. (Demanding no more Sailor Moon in the US since they haven't released any recent DVD's in Japan yet, The whole KOTZ debacle, DBGT itself and more.)
But in retrospection back in the 1980's while some of the anime they made did have dubs back then (such as Voltron) but for the most part they were involved in bigger deals. Remember the famous 80's animated shows by the names of Transformers and G.I Joe? (And probably more than these two shows IIRC.) These are one of the first known cases of US-Japan Co-productions. They were the work of Sunbow Productions of the US and TOEI Animation of Japan (Not too mention had the quite the bit of help from Toy company Hasbro and Legendary Comic Book company Marvel.) Things seemed to be going quite well until the unfortunate financial death of the 1986 cult classic "Transformers the Movie" which then lead to the G.I Joe movie's editting & STV release and of course the end of those shows. Then the companies in question for the most part have went their seperate ways.
But my question is what IF Toei never split up with their one-time American partners? Granted the only way THAT could've happened is if the Transformers Movie was an absolute financial success but still... If TOEI never lost touch with them would they have done a lot better in the US Anime Industry such as licensing and the like or no? I know it sounds strange but its just been something I'm curious about for quite a while now....
