I just saw it today and I think the animation either spoofed or is a rip-off of John.K's work, not that I'm a fan of APC or anthing I thought I'd just point this out,to me it seems like a rip-off,even the title cards are John.K'ish!
No. I don't think that they were trying to rip-off Spumco, specially since Genndy himself directed this episode. Considering this short originally aired in theaters along with the PPG film they kinda needed a similar animation style, that's what I think.
The episode is pretty bad, though. One of the most disturbing Dexter eps I've seen in my life.

I caught it on CN but catched the last 10 seconds and did notice the animation a bit different but none the less.

I have it on DVD and I'm pretty sure that Genndy animated the short himself. The credits say so.

I checked IMDB.com and yes Genndy did animate it but if it were animated for the PPG's movie why does it 'borrow' the Spumco style?

I saw the first few minutes & I was turned away by it's terrible animation & plot. I mean several people say that Jimmy Neutron is a Dexter Rip-Off, a year before the cartoon aired this short ripped-off a plot to a Rugrats episode. When I saw this I was convinced that Dexter is an idiot every season that just to his stupidest.

What, like Spumco ripped off Bob Clampett? Give me a break.
Noone holds the licensed to exaggerated animation. Any good cartoon would use squash and stretch appropriately, know when to draw a character off-model for a laugh, distort facial features, and etc. Spumco didn't invent jack crap. So there's nothing TO rip off, Bill.
It should be said that several Spumco artists, after leaving Spumco, went to Cartoon Network and plenty worked on Dexter and Powerpuff Girls or other Cartoon Cartoons, such as Charlie Bean, David Smith, Don Judge, Chris Savino, Mark O' Hare, and others.
Also, anyone who says the animation in this short is bad is wrong. Sorry to be elitist/jobist. :(

i'll have to agree with javeman ....that it truly wasn't dexter's greatest moment in animation.

I have seen this God-awful episode (and this coming from a hard core Dexter's Lab fan) and I hate it with every bone in my body. Knowing that Genndy DID have something to do with this makes me wonder what in the hell he was thinking.
None the less, I did notice a bit of R&S spoofing with the style of the animation, espically when Dexter goes bezerk by scratching himself (e.g. close up gross anomilies, very detailed chicken pox, the style of bezerkness, scratching yourself on randomly protruding sharp objects, dragging your ass across the laboratory floor ;) )
But in whole, I dunno if it was influenced by Spumco.
May I add that this episode sucked?! No....wait....I already did.
YOU HEAR ME GENNDY! THAT SUCKED!
Vent completed. :D

They played the episode like five times this past week, how could you have not seen it.
Like Matt said, I don't think the animation in itself was bad, it was the whole plot and premise that turned me off. Seeing Dexter scratching himself with extreme close-ups of his chicken pox was kinda disturbing and painful to watch. Add the poor and ugly designs and backgrounds from season 3 and you get this. A truly unawatchable Dexter episode.

I think you guys are totally missing the point. Who, when watching this episode, did not get a shiver up their spine? Did it not translate very clearly the sensation of a darn good scratch? The close ups and the horrible detail just emphasised the grating of nails against raw skin, with the editing highlighting the urgency of a young man tormented by a tremendous itch.
I, for one, think this episode was very well directed. It acheived fully what it set out to do - repulse the whole lot of you. The art direction was well done (nice one craig). Sure, it was a change of angle from the usual dexter style, but this was not your usual dexter episode. It was more of an indulgence on Genndy's behalf. Clearly, it's not very marketable, judging by everyone's responses here, but from an animation point of view it stands up well.

Also, if you really look at Chicken Scratch, the short is basically an extension of Genndy's own animation style. Watch Dee Dee move and act. Compare that with Genndy's original student film (the episode where Dee Dee steals Dexter's remote and the two change back and forth between animals). It's Genndy's style, only on a higher budget and much more refined.
