I currently have $100 (give or take), and I want to spend it before I go back to college next week. What anime should I spend it on? If it helps you, I'm a comedy anime guy, though I'm not above trying other genres.
I've been considering Comic Party- how's that show?

Kino's Journey, Fighting Spirit, and then get Bleach manga volumes 1 & 2. That's one of about thousands of options. I'll be back.

EVA! I already bought Platinum Volume 1, and Vol. 2 doesn't come out until Sept. 21st.
EDIT: I've been meaning to give Project A-Ko another chance, but I can't find it in any stores.

I don't have many comedy selections other than Ranma 1/2.
Though, the first season alone will probably use most of that money.
Even so, it's very, very good.
As for action:
Read or Die OVA and TV series
First 5 volumes of Kiddy Grade. ($17 each at Best Buy, though you should try to find volume 1 with a box. o_o)

I've been considering Comic Party- how's that show?Comic Party is... well, don't expect too much. The back of the Dvds makes it sound off the wall, but it's really slow-paced. Heck, I wouldn't even classify it as a comedy. It has some comedy, but there's a lot of serious... drama (if that's what you'd call it). I'd steer clear unless you know what you're buying.
I like it, but not for the humor...

I'd use Deep Discount DVD or buy used discs to make the cash last.
My suggestion is Fruits Basket. It's only on 4 DVDs, 26 episodes, with a spectacular dub and really great extras. I've never met anyone who hasn't liked the series. It's really one of the best.

yeah fruits basket is a great show. definetely worth your hundred. it was worth my 160 ;)
I've been considering Comic Party- how's that show?I recently finished watching Comic Party. The anime/manga references are funny, and the lead character's best friend, Taishi, steals the show. :D I didn't mind the slow pace, but I found that the relationship angle was under-developed; there is not satisfactory resolution for that at the end of the series. AnimeOnDVD's review (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/2849.php) of the first volume has a good synopsis of the show.
I agree with Ryoga and Karl Olson - Fruits Basket is an excellent choice! :) I've seen most of it (just need to find Vol. 3), and it's a very enjoyable show.

Azumanga daioh any volume thats out now XD Have both of those, love both of them. :anime:
abenobashi I'm really reluctant to buy any more volumes of the show because I was so disappointed in Volume 1. I've heard people say it gets better (and funnier) in Vol. 2-4, but I'm still REALLY reluctant...

I've heard good things about this show, though I was completely off-put by the trailer, which made the show come across as uber serious. But it's always been a consideration in the back of my mind. :)

(explodes) ;) The concept of the show sounded unique, that's probably why I was intrigued by it.
http://www.cduniverse.com/productin...&cart=201621864 Yeah, I know you can find it most anywhere online. I was talking about stores like Suncoast (thought FOR SURE that they'd have it), Best Buy, that sort of thing. I really should start ordering stuff online, though. Save myself an hour's drive to Madison. Speaking of being unable to find DVDs in stores, I can't find "Elf Princess Rane" either, but I hear it's pretty zany, which is why I want it.
I don't have many comedy selections other than Ranma 1/2.
Though, the first season alone will probably use most of that money.
Even so, it's very, very good. Ranma 1/2 is another one of those "classic" series that I should really see. Was it later seasons that had a lot of filler material? (Atleast that's what I've read)
Bleach manga volumes 1 & 2 Hey, it IS better than Naruto, after all. :p If I did pick it up, it'd be my first manga.... EVER.
Finally, I've been considering GITS: Stand Alone Complex, though I'm reluctant because it's been a while since I've seen the film, so I'll probably be fuzzy on the background. Is it a show that requires a good knowledge of the film beforehand?
EDIT:
If you're going to college next week you'd better save that money for beer. I don't really like the smell or taste of beer enough to want to spend money on it.

Ignore the FUNimation trailers for Fruits Basket. They make the show look nothing like it actually is. Get it, trust me. At least volume one.

Yes, FUNimation played up the angst in the trailer because they knew that everything else they had at the time was hardcore shonen, so they made some dark trailers. But what makes it work, is that it's balance of side-splitting comedy and some very well set up drama. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll likely like it, maybe love it.
Keep in mind, I'm a huge shoujo fanboy, so I'm a little biased, but I can also say on a raw, technical level, it's a great-adaption of the manga, it's the best dub funimation could have done at that point for the property, the animation is nice, the pacing is great and in general, it's a high quality show.
Another good option would be to save it and wait for something new, like One Piece DVD's which should be out in the near future, hopefully uncut.
Kare Kano has a boxset out now, I think. That's a good comedy. $100 might not be enough, though. I guess I could check. Yeah, I found it for $116, but it's still a good price for 26 eps.

Steer clear unless you know what you're buying. (most people saw the preveiw episode in Newtype... But I saw it used at babbages on the DVD rack for 12$ :D )

Ranma is a great series you can't go wrong with if you love comedy. It's true that the later seasons were mainly filler, but the first season was great. Retail price is $100, but if you do start to shop online, you can find it much cheaper. You can find it at RightStuf (http://www.rightstuf.com) for $60 (http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/amQqEJXRZsSfoZtpGP/browse/item/55590/4/0/0) if you use the coupon code on the main page.

Here's the only thing with Fruits Basket: There's a boxset coming out November 9th, and I've been getting into buying the boxes lately. So I definitely won't be buying the entire series right away. That way if I like the show, I won't waste a lot of money if I decide to buy the box with the rest of the series later on.
Another good option would be to save it and wait for something new, like One Piece DVD's which should be out in the near future, hopefully uncut. I thought everyone was all worried that 4Kids would butcher it mercilessly? Although I've watched the intro and it had some good animation.

I doubt OP DVDs will be out soon enough for your consideration. I will say that waiting for Fruits Basket is cool I guess. I then reaffirm the Boogiepop/NieA pick up then. With a little look, you ought be able to wrangle that combo for under 100.

To Go-Chin: Well, looks like Ranma 1/2 season sets are out, because I checked DVD Aficionado and some of them are Out of Print. I mean I could probably find them if I looked hard enough, but now that I think about it, I didn't see any Ranma products the last time I went into Suncoast. Oh well.

Out of print? I still see them all the time. Though since it is not that "recent" and a boxset to boot, some stores may not sell it anymore. (Yeah, Ranma 1/2 actually finished a couple of years ago, would you believe? How many years it took Viz to release that, only promising to continue so long as it's sellng, so nobody ever thought they'd see the day? )
You may have the same trouble with others because it seems to me you're looking for the classics like Project A-ko. For such rarer items, online may be the way to find them. May even find good deals and save on shipping when ordered together.

I actually see Ranma sets all the time where I live (and I live in a small town). The problem is, it's usually the later seasons. I'd like to start on Ranma, but I can never find Season One. Ah, well, I can still read the Manga!
I'd like to make a recommendation, but it seems that all the good ones have been made already. I'm currently enjoying Martian Successor Nadesico, which is pretty funny and has mecha (Chicks Dig Giant Robots ;) ). Unfortunately, since I haven't seen the entire series yet I can't really officially recomend it.
And just as a side note, it's good you're wasting your $100 on anime instead of booze. It'll last longer, and is less likely to get you arrested.

so, $99.98, less at sane retailers.
also, for folks like me who refused to wait for the box, Funi will make the box part itself available at the zstore IIRC.

Actually, Viz finished releasing Ranma 1/2 only about a year ago with season seven. The manga is a whole different story, though. Hasn't it been 6+ years since they first started releasing it?

According to the first page of Vol. 1, the first edition (English, I assume the Japanese edition came long before) was published in 1993.
When I was in the bookstore yesterday, I noticed that they were all the way up to somwhere in the 20s. However, they probably would be finished by now, except they changed formats a couple of years ago. (I think it had something to do with Viz no longer releasing a "comic book" version, but then why is it still flipped?) I have one volume of the old edition, which is larger in size compared to the current edition which is approximately the same size as the GNs you'd get from any other company, such as Tokyopop. When they started releasing the current edition, they stopped releasing the older one and started over. And who knows how many times they've done this since 1993?

Well I ended up taking NONE of your advice :p and bought Kiki's Delivery Service, having seen it recently on Toon Disney and enjoying it. However, I might still make a trip up to Madison before I start, and even if I don't buy any more DVDs before I go back, rest assured, your advice hasn't been for naught. Plenty of good options from this thread. :)

Despite having lukewarm feelings for volume 1, I decided to give Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi another chance and bought Volume 2 today. Luckily, it was better than Vol. 1, both in terms of laughs (love the fast pace of the dino episode!) and character development (episode 7, though really light on comedy, was a nice exposition on the history of the arcade & its owners). While I still wouldn't put it above other series like Galaxy Angel, Excel Saga, and Azumanga Daioh, it was more enjoyable than Volume 1.
So thanks for the suggestion, Karl Olson! :) And yes, I won't be posting in this thread anymore, as I go back to school tomorrow.
