A Farfetch'd Tale

Having recieved his new Hive Badge in Azaela Town, Ash sets off to the nearest Gym in Goldenrod City. To get there, though, they have to travel through the Ilex Forest, where it's very dark. There, the gang meet up with a young boy named Sylvester, who is trying, and failing, to get his Farfetch'd to chop some trees down for wood using the Cut Technique. Can Ash & co. teach Sylvester how to be a good trainer and stop Team Rocket's latest scheme?

Comments: Amazing how the anime people can turn a 30-second sidestory, involving two characters with one line of dialogue each, into a 22-minute filler episode. Yet another horrible episode after a Gym Battle.

Tricks of the Trade

In the next town, there's a Pokémon Swap Meet, where trainers gather to trade all sorts of Pokémon. Not only that, but there's a bunch of mini-tournaments going on too. Ash trades his Heracross for his Tauros in order to compete in one of the tournaments, then later helps a young trainer find somebody to trade for his blue blob called Wobuffet. Hmm, it's been a while since Jessie caught a new Pokémon...

Comments: Here we see Team Rocket's one-and-only GS Pokémon: Wobuffet. The little blue blob has become as popular as Meowth has, maybe bigger. It was nice seeing Tauros again, even if it wasn't all that important a battle.

The Fire-ing Squad

Ash is ready to send Tauros back, while Oak says that he wants to study Heracross some more. After that, Ash sees that there is a firefighting tournament in town, and not only do the gang meet up with Captain Aiden and his team of Wartortle from the Orange Islands, but they also meet Officer Jenny and the Squirtle Squad! Ash decides to enter the tournament with his Squirtle, along with Misty's Poliwag, Staryu, and...Psyduck!?

Comments: For some odd reason, Ash forgot about his own Kingler, and chose Psyduck for his team. I'd feel crushed if I was Kingler. Also, I'm guessing there's no real rules in this tournament, as the Squirtle Squad should have been disqualified when Ash's Squirtle stepped in.

No Big Woop!

Traveling along some random forest, Ash and company find a young woman named Olesia and her school of Wooper, the pre-evolved form of Quagsire. Brock instantly falls in love with Olesia and tags along when she runs an errand, leaving Ash and Misty to babysit the rest of the Wooper! Things don't go swimmingly, obviously, and the two young trainers have their hands full with one very mischevious Wooper!

Comments: Eh, the whole babysit thing was done much better in Advanced's "Having a Wailord of a Time!" Also, Brock and Olesia leave together for a long time, don'tcha think? Wonder what they were doing for so long? ;)

NOTES

This season is the 4th American season and covers the end of the Orange Islands and the first 1/3 of Johto.
We're back to four episodes this week!
Jessie gets her new trademark Pokémon: Wobuffet.
Jessie's Lickitung, as well as Ash's Heracross and Squirtle leave the show this week, though Heracross comes back every now and then. Squirtle comes back for the Johto League Championships.
Tauros also appears for the first time in Johto.
We start and end pretty rough, but the middle is pretty good.
Next week Ash's Johto team is completed, as a certain blue croc and a red bird join the cast.
Ash's team currently is: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, and Chikorita.
Misty's team currently is: Togepi, Staryu, Poliwag, Goldeen, Psyduck
Brock's team currently is: Onix, Geodude, Zubat, Vulpix, Pineco

that filler was kind of boring like most but at least we got to see all the pokemon and team rocket almost won kind of fairly for once to so it wasn't a total loss

I believe that was the last episode where Lickitung is called out to battle. I wish the kid & Lickitung would return for an episode, just to see Jessie's reaction.

something seemed really wrong with this episode  shouldn't the pokemon have some say if they are traded or not? Wobbaffet and all the others didnt seem like they cared or anything  it was still a good interesting episode with the first of many returns for Magikarp salesguy and I liked team rockets welcome to the team thing to Wobbaffet at the end :)

Johto is so bad that its best episodes usually draw upon past events and characters just like this! :) I don't think the Squirtle squad should have won all the way that seemed a little corny but even more corny was team rockets fire not hurting anybody  with that stuff aside it was a great episode with a cool kind of competition!

those Wooper were super cuter then Quagsire! even if it was total filler I really loved this episode because all the cuteness :) Togepi showed a little development though I think by showing it wasn't a baby anymore and was smart enough to help out. plus we saw the GS Ball again even if it was a flashback so Duke was kind of wrong

bad first half of the week and great second half equals an okay rating
