I wonder what the "Great Cartoon Controversy" show's going to be about. Sounds like an interesting episode.

I do. Its original title was "The Controversy of 1946", so I'm pretty sure it's "Rhapsody Rabbit" vs. "Cat Concerto".

Sounds great - those are two of my all time faves. Any bets that the other cartoon will be RHAPSODY IN RIVETS?
"Who? Franz Liszt?...never hoid of him!"

I dunno, if it's about the Rhapsody Rabbit/Cat Concerto controversy, then Rhapsody in Rivets wouldn't fit in at all. Maybe they will show Tweetie Pie. I've heard many arguments that the academy awarded it the Oscar when they realized that Rhapsody Rabbit came first.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... could "Before Bedrock" possibly be some of the never-seen [by me, at least!] Fleischer "Stone Age" cartoons?????????

A one-hour "The Early Works of Friz Freleng" would be a perfect chance to show Friz' first, but uncredited, directorial cartoon for Warner's, "Bosko In Dutch," or at the very least, toss in a clip or two of the cartoon.
Also, I would guess at least one on Friz' "Captain and the Kids" cartoons would show up in the one-hour special -- preferably "Mama's New Hat" with the "Fred Dumby" sign on the door in the background, which showed how Friz and his background artist felt about their boss at MGM.
So just what is this Rhapsode Rabbot/Cat Concerto controversy I hear about?
And a Friz Freleng hour is gonna rock ^___^

Due to a back up at the Technicolor lab, and the similarity of the material, some Rhapsody Rabbit footage was accidentally sent to the Tom & Jerry unit at MGM.
Hanna/Barbera were doing The Cat Concerto at the time, and this caused them to rush their production in order to be considered for an Oscar in 1946, rather than '47 (when it was actually released).
When the years animated shorts were screened for the members of the Academy, Cat Concerto was run first, giving the (false) impression that Freleng and crew stole the idea from H/B.
The Cat Concerto went on to win the Academy Award.
At least that's the way I heared it!
That's the way I heard it too, had Technicolor not messed up, Rhapsody Rabbit could have been the first WB short to win an Oscar.

I'm fairly certain it'll be the 2 cartoons on the "Controversy" one, with a 3rd cartoon's slot taken up with discussion and clips about the controversy, background, and lotsa interesting stuff like that.
Lookin' forward to that(and the others... well, not the Elmer one; I'll look backwards to that! :D )

<< Rhapsody Rabbit could have been the first WB short to win an Oscar. >>
Given how enamored the Academy was with Tom and Jerry back then, I'm not sure it mattered which cartoon was screened first. They probably would have come away feeling that Tom and Jerry did it better, anyway. (The cat and mouse ran away with seven of the ten Oscars awarded between 1943 and 1952 for best animated short.)
For the record, "Cat Concerto" DID end up competing with a Warner Bros. cartoon for the Oscar that year, but it was McKimson's "Walky Talky Hawky," not "Rhapsody Rabbit."

You know, this episode could be about Frank Tashlin's or Bob Clampett's departure from WB, or Friz Freleng's brief period away from the studio, over "Tweetie Pie". C'mon, a WOODPECKER in the place of Tweety in this cartoon? Why would anyone want a woodpecker in their house, after seeing what Woody did to the Panda Family house...;)

I think everyone who could possibly read this thread and reply has done both, so I'm going to "unstick" it. If anyone else wants it "important" again, we can arrange that too, but what's old is old. :)
