I keep hearing mentions of this show... what the heck is it? Where does it air? What is it about?

I'll need to post some links about the history of the show to give you an idea, but roughly, I'd call it a more realistic 90210. In fact, many say that it was the original Degrassi series (Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High) that inspired Aaron Spelling's 90210. The original series was VERY popular in Canada back in the 80s, but the recent incarnation - Degrassi: The Next Generation, is seeing alot of populatirty in the U.S. thanks to it being The-N's (Noggin) flagship show. If you have Digital Cable, you probably get The-N, and if you're interested in what time it comes on, episodes tend to air at 8pm EST on Fridays with encores during the weekend. The new season (season 4) starts October 1st on The-N, if I'm not mistaken, but August 27th begins a short series called Degrassi Unscripted that basically just looks at the life of some of the cast members (Miriam Mcdonald, Cassie Steele, Lauren Collins, Jake Epstein, and Adam Ruggeiro [sp?] to be specific).
So yeah, you could call it a teen drama...but I wouldn't compare it to anything on The WB, Fox, ABC, etc. only because I can find myself better relating to many of the characters on D:TNG.
Oh yeah, for more info, check out places like www.degrassi.tv (http://www.degrassi.tv) and Degrassi's TV Tome (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/ShowMainServlet/showid-6810/Degrassi_The_Next_Generation/) page for more info on the show, it's history, and characters

I think it's one of the most realistic teen dramas on, though I think it can be a bit cliche at times.
It's like SonGoku V3 said, it's a reincarnation of the older Degrassi series.
It's about kids that go to a community school and their problems.
It's much more realistic then any of the recent crappy teen dramas on.
The show can seem a bit cliche in the beginning but the show keeps getting better and better as it goes along.
Though I think it's kinda like a soap opera because the plot lines are always drastically changing. :p
It airs Fridays at 8 PM, then again at 10 PM on The-N (Nighttime on Noggin.)
New episodes start this October! :D
The-N kinda sucks though because they left two episodes from last season unaired, it was about abortion but they've aired more risky things like drugs, rape (there's going to be another one about it in the upcoming season), homosexuality, etc...
The-N also edits stupid things out too, and in the earlier episodes they blurred out posters.

I agree, but I'd say that Degrassi: TNG and My So Called Life are up there on more realistic teen dramas.

It's a teenage drama about teenage with problems. It airs on Noggin I think. I think I have only watched two whole episodes. It's alright not that great.

It's a show that I only watch because of the lovely Cassie Steele

This is the explanation I give my friends. Take Boston Public, move it to Toronto and tell the story from the students' point of view.

For those of you who want ALL of Degrassi, not just the edits, the Ultimate Box Set is coming out September 28.
Check out www.funimation.com/degrassi (http://www.funimation.com/degrassi) for all of the details.
I can answer any questions you have about the set on this thread.

I can answer any questions you have about the set on this thread.I'm assuming you work for FUNimation? I'm completely shocked that they're even distributing Degrassi: TNG in the first place, but I am pretty grateful. My only two questions are (if you can answer them): 1) Any set prices for the season one set and 2) how long will it be before we can start expecting a season two box set and even season three (as you may know, ALOT of American fans will be anticipating the season three set more than anything).

Yes I do work for FUNimation. :)
FUNimation was built on bringing fans the entertainment they want. So, toon and popular cult tv offerings were a great logical next step.
To answer your questions:
1) The Ultimate Box Set for Season One of Degrassi has a suggested retail price of $49.98. The set is the ultimate for fans, really. It has more than 100 extras, including bloopers and outakes for every episode, cast bios, original cast audition tapes, and a lot more. Every set also comes with Degrassi locker decor. We're very proud of it.
2) Dates for Season Two and Three aren't set yet. Things are always subject to change in this industry. Maybe a year from the street date of Season One. But its too early to tell right now.
Go Degrassi! :anime:

That show has been on for like a million years. I remember being a very young lad and watching "Kids of Degrassi Street School" back to back with 3-2-1 Contact on PBS in the late 80's

Thanks for answering...about $50 is pretty understandable, but I'm honestly hoping some of the stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, maybe even Suncoast...but I'm doubting the latter) will have a sale on it or something - but that's just me being cheap.;)
Also, I can expect a season 2 box set around September 2005? You guys are going to have us Degrassi fans on pins and needles waiting for season three (which is the infamous season that American network, The-N, skips two episodes because of the topic it deals with):D j/k, but thanks to FUNimation for distributing the show, and I can't wait for the DVDs.
One more thing I'm curious about though: If the D: TNG box set does relatively well, could FUNimation possibly distribute the original Degrassi series as well, or is that something they have no control over at the moment? I (probably along with many others, particularly in Canada) would love to see Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High on DVD one day.

The door is wide open right now. As of now, there are no plans. However, as you know, that could change at the drop of a hat. I will stay on the boards and notify everyone if things change. Right now, FUNimation just has Degrassi: The Next Generation.
And you are quite welcome! We had as much fun making it and pulling the set together as you will watching it.

While I like Degrassi now, my allegiance is to the original shows. I would love for them to come out on dvd at some point. The fact that several of the original shows cast play important roles on the new show leads me to believe that there could be hope for this. Please tell me I'm right :D.
