So I'm watching bits and pieces of the Laff-A-Lympics marathon on Boomerang (I can only watch bits and pieces of such a program, don't ask.), and there's something I don't understand.

There's three teams, right, Yogi, Scooby, and villains. They're all based on comedy series. Now then, if the Yogi team represents characters from the 60's, and the Scooby team represents characters from the 70's, then what is Grape Ape (introduced in the 70's) doing on the Yogi team?

Now I know what you're thinking. "Then wouldn't that put Scooby Doo on the Yogi team also since that show debuted in 1969?" I think they gave Scooby some leeway, as their characters didn't fit the funny animal scheme of the Yogi Team.

And what about those villians? I don't recall them being featured in any H-B cartoon series.

About the teams:

Yogis: The team's theme is based on the early days of Hanna-Barberra TV. As for the Grape Ape being on the team, the Grape Ape is more in the style of the old H-B cartoons than the theme for the "Scoobies".

Scoobies: The team's theme is "1970's mystery solvers/crime fighters". With the exception of Hong Kong Phooey, most of the members of the team have either appeared in an episode of the New Scooby-Doo movies or have their own segment in a series that features Scooby-Doo.

Rottens: The theme of the team is "villains". The team, with the exception of Mumbly, was made specifically for the series. However, original plans were to have Dick Dastardly and Muttley as the captains for the team, only for right problems preventing them from being in series.

Yeah, I do not think they broke it up by decades, but by similar genres for the characters. I'll never get enough scooby flying through the air on a high wire.

I presumed the Yogis were meant to represent "old-school" era H-B characters (up to the mid-to-late 60's), while the Scoobies represented the then-contemporary characters of the late 60's and 70's (the Rottens, of course, were just all-bad guys).

As for Grape Ape, maybe he's just a Yogis ringer (a la the U.S. insisting on zillion-dollar NBA players for their Olympic team to stomp other countries into the ground---despite that not working too well in this last weekend's loss to Puerto Rico...).

-B.Yeah. If not for Grape Ape, the Scoobys (and even the Rottens) would have won more 'Lympics for sure. But I do go with the above comments that he'd be with the Yogis since they're the "wacky animal characters". The Scoobys (save for Babu) are the "crime fighters/mystery solvers" team. And the Rottens are (well) the Rottens.
